New 2004 nsx build

You Guys are never gonna believe this.......

went to drop the gas tank and I remember the instrument cluster said Full Tank.

well I figured there was gonna be a little bit of gas left after the burn so I get a small bucket.

took the bolt off and bammmmm filled the bucket in like 2 seconds. I put the bolt back On thinking I am gonna need something bigger, so I got one of those huge bottle water containers that stand upside down, that hold 5 gallons each

I filled 3 of them to the brim with gas,, and about half of the 4th one.

so during the fire no gas was burned from the tank.

no f-ing way........ I took a pic of the last fill post later

no way,, no way,,, you say " I swear to Jesus as my Lord, and strike me down if I am lie'n "

It's the fumes that burn, not the liquid. Ask any welder who has worked on a gas tank. They will weld a full tank, not an empty one! Plus if the tank was not damaged no gas should be spilled.

i'll put cash money on that motor being good.... remove the obvious burned parts and you'll find a nice clean engine...

out of all the burned NSX's, they all seem to be contained to the drivers side...... I guess that's where the fuel lines run?

Welding on a full tank? You nuts? I've sumped a few tanks, always drained them and washed them out with soap 4-5 times to get all vapors out...

EAC, yeah the fuel neck from the gas cap runs right down and into the top of the gas tank.

and it was perfect gas as it filled into the huge water bottle after the first one was filled I looked at the gas and it was clean. I mean that was a full tank so whats that 45 Bucks, it was a waste of gas.

but after I dropped the gas tank the paint inside was clean.

now the top of the gas tank, a few of the hoses were burned and could not be salvaged. but shined a flashlight into the tank and it was mint.

I was thinking it burned all the way inside the tank and was expecting to buy a new one. but nope saved myself the trouble.

also since the tank was Full and the Gas pump was fully submerged in cold gas I dont think the gas pump is bad either.

this car is looking more and more like a blessing parts wise.

I took pics but I am to tired to upload them tonight. tomorrow guys.

and will take pics of the top of the gas tank to show the damage to the hoses.

by the way how much does the 2004 hold in gas I think 18 gallons, not sure so 3 jugs filled to the brim is 15-16 gallons, and then the half one 1-2 and about a gallon fell on the ground with my finger in the hole LOL

well maybe i can load a few pics tonight LOL be right back

Nice project, brave man and good boy! Sorry to see it only now, nsxprime has not been on my priority list for some time...

One question though which may be of interest to other NSX owners: what was the cause? I don't believe in the mouse or a rat theory (as long as I don't see white mouses :)). It takes much more to cause a fire. A fuel leak is fatal very soon, oil takes quite much until it fires. What smell did the 1st owner smell?

RX7's had issues with engine fires, cause was the fuel hose ruptured under the intake. I'd say the same problem exists with the NSX.

On a 2004?! Has the quality come that much down that you can't trust an elementary fuel hose?!

thanks Goldnsx

no bone stock.

yeah I know the mouse theory is all I have for ya.

EAC the F-cars are burning to the ground cuz they are using GLUE to hold the exhaust covers together which are also made of plastic. that makes no sense yeah I know

well built, I mean some pencil pusher comes up with this idea and bang he has a promotion and a new car.

then the cars are burning to the ground and he is fired LOL and they take the car back. LOL

update: Sub frame back on and the rotors/knuckles etc. upper and lower control arms, will do some last minute cleaning and off to the body shop for the engine bay to be painted, and around the rear window and the rear chassis panels.

then I am gonna get brand new brake lines, gas hoses etc. etc,

and then start work on the engine. lots of work to be done on that.

I took the starter off and tested it and it still works, chipped off the melted plastic, and cleaned the shit out of it. looks new. started to clean the tranny and stopped to tired today.

will be taking the driveshafts to my buddys shop to be re-packed and new CV boots put on.

I can do it but I dont wanna go buy the crimp clamp device to do it. and I am not gonna get those screw on clamps. ughhh OEM all the way baby.

I just want the fire damage to be cleaned and painted so it will give me hope that its coming along quickly. and make me happy she will be alive SOON...

Looking good Shawn. So have you checked to see what it's going to cost you to paint the whole car? Or are you going to feather in the paint? Have you got a good man spraying the car?

Anyway, it's looking like you will have a fairly easy time of it. Hope it keeps going well when you get to the electricals! Keep up the good work Shawn!

Tim

no the rest of the car the paint shows that this car was garaged and well cared for. not a scatch or chip in the paint anywhere.

I have a place thats gonna paint the engine bay and sides first, then when I start buying the other parts and its assembled, minus the engine

will have them paint the car and overlay, or feather or blend whatever

till it matches.

he said they will sand the doors slightly and then blend it in.

it will look OEM and Mint.

Great progress. Watching in awe. Glad things are moving along well. Can't wait to see it painted!

Totally side topic....

do you think this car and 45k would get you through the NSX Factory Refresh program? I am guessing no but just something i thought of while reading this.

good luck with the restoration

Shawn - WTF?? = All weekend to do work and no updates????? We are lovin your thread on your build and want daily updates!!:biggrin: C,mon! Keep up the good work!! Jay

sorry been busy, for updates, just got all new motor mounts,

took off the Intake manifold and it was mint inside but the outside of it looks like crap, so I am gonna clean it up and take pics, funny all the gaskets look fine. I was thinking I was gonna need the whole intake manifold but naaa it just needs the painted cover plates etc. etc.

sorry no new pics. the next pics are gonna be of the car in the shop being painted so stay tuned guys its coming. my bank account was hit hard and its taking longer than I expected to bounce back LOL

but rest assured it will be MINT when done.

Sorry I havent made it over to Tampa yet to check it out during the day. Did you find all the parts you needed and did any water get in the motor?

So Shawn, where are you getting your parts - are you buying new ones? I'm assuming that you bought new motor mounts - where are you getting them - they are pretty expensive aren't they? I think I checked on em.

What are you doing about the wiring harness - will you havce to buy a new one? Glad things are moving along for you. Keep up the good work - we are all living vicariosly thru you. Great stuff.
