F1 2009 megathread

I'm very happy to see Barrichello win. He looks like a 98 lbs jockey on that podium, the shortest man, yet the oldest, and this time the fastest.

Button brought his girlfriend and father. That's all very nice. But Barrichello just brought himself so he can concentrate better.

Will Eddie Jordan visit Barrichello at home a second time and caress those cheeks even more ?

Re: The best possible overall outcome?

Perfect strategy and execution for the Bees. And the best news is that
1) they managed both tires almost identically and very well.
2) And it wasn't all that hot, right? Track temp was only 100F? so maybe they've got the tire puzzle worked out.
3) this race should indicate to Ruby that there are no team orders or a conspiracy to benefit Jensen.
4) A Brawn WCC and WDC is looking pretty likely right now.

I can't think of one thing that could have gone better, can you?

Edit: oh and Pony (tiofosi) Boy got a bonus with some red on the podium !!!

I know! I only got to watch the first 15 min of the race before I had to leave for the airport. Kimi actually drove a great race esp with Sutil behind nipping at his heels for the second race in a row.

However, I did see/read the race through the F1 iPhone app. Wow...pretty cool. You basically watch representations of the race cars and watch/read the lap times and live commentary.

Either way the DC turns, I'm a satisfied fan. Would be more satisfied if Honda didn't wuss out this year.

Thankfully I was wrong in my pre-qualifying estimation of the Brawns continuing to struggle. A good race overall, but not terribly exciting. Glad to see the Brawns up top again... great strategy call by Brawn. I'm not certain they've solved the tire problem though... it was 81 degrees ambient if I recall and the track temp was in the triple digits.

I'm not sure why the KERS cars would go light on fuel. They can be a few spots back on the grid a bit and hit the button after the start to make them up, so why are they going light? Heikki has to have lost his seat by now, given another terribly disappointing performance. I agree with the commentary on why is Rosberg so hot and nobody is looking at last year's man Kubica. Seems odd.

Lewis was pushing again incredibly hard and this time he overdid it. Hard hit he took there. Another strong performance by the Kimster... Perhaps over the past several races he has started trying again? Or perhaps Ferrari is giving him more support as the #1 driver?

Very impressive race by the Fisichella replacement (Luizzi or something like that?) before his retirement. Especially when considered against all of the other new drivers and how poorly they have fared. The only one who even remotely shows anything (to me) is Grosjean.

Lastly, Nakajima really needs to throw in the towel. I don't know what that crap was that he pulled with Glock (or was it Trulli?), but he needs to wake up or get off the track before he hurts someone.

it was nakajima that really caused the incident by locking his front left break, going wide, and turning into glock i believe...but trulli and glock are the toyotas that got into it and almost took eachother out...bad sportsmanship right there, even between teammates.

great result for brawn!

i can only wonder, considering how good Sutil did the whole race, how well Fissicella would have done if he had stayed with Force India. Luzzi did a great job also until his gearbox failure.

Re: FIA & Bernie sandbagging against Renault's departure

There are possibly 28 teams on grid at the moment when they said 26 was the limit. So I guess that signals to Renault that they're expected to leave. And if BMW leaves with no buyer, they'll still have 24 cars minimum. Well, assuming these noob teams actually get their cars built and on-grid. WSS (we shall see)

Edit: Now I see that the BMW team has been sold and will be on the grid. So, looks like we're at 26 teams, er, uh, CARS !!!

You mean 14 teams. 28 teams would equal 56 cars on the grid. ;)

Reb, you're a man of detail. Good on ya. I'm feeling secure knowing you're on watch.

BTW, what's your MOS and grade? Just curious.

Lotus just confirmed to be 13th team for 2010 and BMW Sauber looks like they'll be the 14th team as an agreement has been reached with the sale of the team to Swiss group, Qadbak Investments Ltd. FIA is pressing for a 14 team field.

Flavio Briatore and Pat Symonds have left Renault F1 team and the team will not dispute the allegations loged by the FIA.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out Flav...I sure hope the 700 odd staff lay lawsuits for loss of income!!!

Wasn't Symonds offered immunity by the FIA if he testified to everything he knows about crash-gate?

Flav makes his money elsewhere that's for sure. I wonder where he'll pop up again though.

Re: Symonds; what's his relationship to Flav?

True. But it seems to me he would have had to stab Flav in the back and since he was as much or more guilty than Flav, that would have really been seamy by anyone's standards.

Maybe they are a team? I don't know, but maybe Symonds is thinking he'll be the team engineer for an ALMS car or whatever Flav does next. I'm assuming in all this that FIA will ban both of them from F-1 for life. Or maybe, since Flav will be a dad soon, he'll try to make himself believe he can settle down. MS tried for awhile. I mean, Old Man Time subtly but unavoidably changes things.

Spanky must be smiling ear to ear and patting himself on the back for "cleaning up F-1".:rolleyes::confused: He took down Ron last year and Flaming Flav this year and thinks everyone forgot his little faux paus and that he exited gracefully.

From formula1.com, Flavio and Symmonds have left Renault. Renault does not dispute the allegations.
I fear this may be the end of the team. Maybe the Benneton family will buy back the team.

Pretty grim news.

I think the interweb is broken. The biggest news in F-1 Since May 94 and not one reply in 3-1/2 hours. I know it is Mexican Independence / Navy Sailor Boy day, but c'mon.

Re: Bernie's great one-liner

Bernie's not known for Letterman/Leno type humor, but speaking of Flavio leaving Renault and presumably F-1, he hit this one out of the park:

"He told me recently that he didn't want to finish up like me, 'playing with racing cars' at my age," the F1 supremo told The Mirror, "so at least he's been saved that embarrassment."
:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin: That's rich !!! :wink:

I think they are done as a constructor. They may stay on as an engine supplier

Even then, F1 engines are very costly. Why didn't Honda stay with his engine? I don't hope it for F1 as Renault had great engines in the past (Turbos etc.) but I fear the same as you...

Because the Honda engine was a dog..... and nobody wanted it. Prior to the blow ups on Vettel's Red Bull, the Renault engine had been competetive and reliable.

Between BMW leaving and the likelyhood of Renault leaving, it could be back to the old days of Everyone (almost) running Cosworth DFV engines, plus Ferrari!

Vettel lost the championship by let's say 50% due to the Renault engines. So, I would not call it reliable.

That would be not so bad. They did freeze the engine developement, there's not a real competition among the brands.
