F1 2009 megathread

Hey Rebel, I understand what you are saying, I'm simply stating that the rule under safety car. The problem I'm having is not what Lewis and his race manager did afterwards, my problem is simply what the Stewart did after the race without about their "statements." I guess my issue is, I don't like to see race car drivers loose their points for their off the track issues. Let them keep their points and punish them some other ways. FIA is good at taking money from McLaren. If this type of scrutiny continues, they can go after the diffuser cars after the ruling on April 14th. Make sense?

Regardless, it's an old news and I'm looking forward to Brawn's victory today.

Bottom line, they lied and tried to cheat. You lie/cheat and get caught, you will get penalized, like they did last year. What happened here was that they lied and someone else got punished for it.

All they had to say was , yes , we let Trulli pass. They would have 5 points towards WDC. The stewards maybe could have even given them 3rd place back, and 4th to Jarno Trulli. Instead they got greedy and wanted that 1 extra point, at all costs, and it backfired on them.

back to Malaysia

Button on pole position once again!!!
Rubinho qual'd 4th but moved down to 9th after a 5 grid penalty for a gearbox change.
Go BrawnGP!!

hahaha button with another win

lol, both behind safety cars. I like where Brown is going. Keep building those points, get the championship in the bag!!!

1 Brawn GP - Barrichello, Button 25
2 Toyota - Glock, Trulli 17.5
3 Renault - Alonso, Piquet Jnr 4
4 Williams - Nakajima, Rosberg 4
5 BMW-Sauber - Heidfeld, Kubica 3
6 Toro Rosso - Bourdais, Buemi 3
7 McLaren - Hamilton, Kovalainen 1.5
8 Red Bull - Vettel, Webber 0.5

Did you hear Bob Varsha mention that 8 other times the driver who won the first 2 races back to back went on to win the Championship?

Button takes another win leading the Championship with 15 points, Rubens with 10 points!!

Hey Vance, it's BRAWN!! not Brown!! Maybe you should write Brawn like 100 times on a chalk board. ;)

man what an interesting race...although it would appear the FIA or the Malaysian GP organizers had no clue what to do at the end.

Priceless moment was Raikkonen sitting having an ice cream before the race was declared over!!! Love it...

Way to go Button and Brawn GP!

Seems like this is gonna be a bad year for my boys at Ferrari. Dammit.

Good job Brawn!

Well, I feel asleep 10-15 minutes into the rain stoppage. Woke back up during the driver interview.

What I liked:
- JB, and Brawn won - of course.
- Kimi in cargo shorts and a Snoop Dogg hat eating ice cream and a coke 2 seconds after his car was walked into the pits.
- mention of the engineers using a Shamwow on one of the cars.

I'm still tired.

"I can haz ice creamz?"

This is why I like Kimi. He isn't like every other driver in F1. They did a nice short special about him on Inside Grand Prix this weekend. Apparently he would rather be Rally racing than racing F1.

I really liked the driver interview this weekend. Seemed more informal and it really looked like Button, Heidfeld, and Glock were having fun with it.

Re: "F-1 is a boring parade"

Good thing the guys that used to say that weren't watching today. Lots of crazy rules and variables like KERS, unpredictable tires and the crazy late race time with low light, shadows, etc. We will curse them sooner or later, but they were definitely working today. There was so much to watch on track, the pundits' comments got lost in the action.

It's a good thing these things are working, because Bernie's next ideas are 1) ski boots, 2) boxing gloves and 3) eye patches. Think I'm kidding?

It seems to me that you might not understand that Honda basically abandoned the team.

Highly interesting race in Malaysia... lots of stuff going on strategy wise, but a bit of a letdown to end like that. Congrats again to JB... Rubens was a bit disappointing, no? And Hamilton had another strong performance.

I think once the Red Bull cars get the bigger diffuser they will be really tough. They've been really strong without them.

I understand it but It was Honda when they in 2007 begin to work on the car
and they abandoned 2008 year for this today mean that Honda spent lots of
many on knowledge on it.

We don't know the details of what happened between Honda and Ross Brawn, so we can't really say Honda abandoned the team. How many resources and $$$ did Honda really give to Brawn? we may never know, and there may be a clause for Honda to come back.

Rubens disappointing?? He still qualified 4th, and after the grid penalty shuffle, he started 8th. Would have been 9th if it weren't for Vettel. He finished the race in 5th.

I still believe that the rear diffuser is not what's giving the other teams their advantage. It's more their whole aero packages that are better designed than the rest of the teams.

I agree whole car is done well very good balanced.

Way to go,BBB! Just watched the race!Just so exciting watching all the tire decisions/changes.I think the guys were watching out for each other trying to drive cleaner in the turns without touching this race, compared to others.F1 is turning into a race for genius:confused: So many rules, the drivers nor thier engineers can keep track.

Agree we don't know all of the details, but this is what we do know. The car is running a Merc engine that it wasn't designed for because Honda pulled out. If Brawn didn't come through and buy the team it is likely it would have vaporized into thin air, 2008 development notwithstanding.

Yes, 5th place is nothing to sniff at, but my comments about Rubens are in the context of what the car has shown to be capable of. I would say that he didn't seem to be that strong with a very strong (arguably the best) car. Compare that against what Alonso or Hamilton are doing with cars that are clearly off the pace.

I also agree the diffuser is only part of the story (in fact I commented exactly that earlier in the thread). But clearly it is part of the story, and the Red Bulls are running very strong without it and I expect once they get the new diffuser they will be even stronger.

I watched the race as presented by ITV last night and my favorite part was the brief interview with Jenson Button's father.

For me, the interviews conducted by the ITV commentators are often the most interesting parts of the whole TV program, even more so than the race itself.

I think Honda will come back as an engine supplier once the rules change and you're allowed to have almost unlimited technical advances in exchange for an R&D cap for the team. I suspect that cap will not include engine development, as it'll be totally impractical to submit big corporations like Merc or Honda as engine suppliers to such micromanagement.

F1: Virgin To Brawn GP For $30 Million?

Brawn GP has now agreed a major sponsorship deal with the Virgin Group for 2010, SportsPro magazine reported on Thursday.

The arrangement for 2009 is set to stay the same, at $250,000 per race.

In Malaysia, the BGP001 cars are featuring the same Virgin branding as in Melbourne a week ago, while team clothing and driver overalls remain unbranded.

In 2010, however, the sponsorship will ramp up to $30 million for the one-year contract, giving Virgin the right to sell space on the cars to additional sponsors.

The deal resembles Ferrari’s Marlboro backing, where the brand has exclusive rights to the livery and the right to offset the contract price by selling space to additional sponsors.

An insider said: “If it (Virgin) gets $80 million, which it might, Virgin will keep $50 million, it’s a good deal.”
