F1 2009 megathread

Re: Hey Rebel, don't read this........

at least not with any sharp objects in your hands.

James Allen talking about McLaren's sins and how Hamo (and Dad) are on the verge of getting out of the team that in 2007, he declared he'd never leave:

......It would be an earthquake if he were to leave McLaren, given the history, but they (Dad; et al) are weighing up whether the team is just pre-destined to keep shooting itself in the foot and whether he’d be better off out of there.

So where would he go? Ferrari is the first name on the list, but his old nemesis Fernando Alonso has got their first. He has an agreement to join Ferrari in 2011, with an option for 2010 if Raikkonen underperforms this season.

BMW? There are several problems with BMW, first they already have Robert Kubica and may feel that they do not need Hamilton. Second they are not a team which spends big money on drivers.

Brawn? They have the fastest car at the moment, but that is because they bought themselves a big headstart by not showing up last season. They won’t be able to do that again so easily. The big teams will catch up.

However, if we get the budget cap of £30 million or more, then this will level the playing field in the favour of teams like Brawn. The manufacturers would not be able to beat them on resources alone.

I find it fascinating that the person in power to whom Hamilton appears to have turned for advice in recent days is Max Mosley. He’s clearly learned what Schumacher knew, that the best way to stay ahead of the others is to have a good relationship with the man who makes the rules. Brawn GP is important for Mosley because it is a blue print for his vision of the sport; a well engineered, lean team with customer engines. Low-cost, high quality F1.

The Brawn model is important now, just as re-invigorating Ferrari was in 1996.

If Hamilton were to join forces with Brawn, it would give the team huge commercial appeal, as Schumacher’s arrival gave Ferrari. Brawn says he is looking for ’strong partners’ for the future. He didn’t say those partners couldn’t be drivers….

Wow, now that would be an interesting pairing. JB and Hami.

But they'd need one heck of a development driver.

I think Alonso would be a good choice for Brawn if RB were to go.

I'm confused by a couple of things on the Malaysian GP:
Why did the pole sitter start on the outside lane?
Why did they classify T. Glock to 3rd place?
TIA for the explanation.

Outside lane because is racing lane and more cleaner,Glock 3. place because they count finish standing, lap before race is stopped.

Re: Honda's simple mistake

Hey Vance, it's BRAWN!! not Brown!! Maybe you should write Brawn like 100 times on a chalk board.
Seems to be a lot of chin rubbing talk about how Honda could have so underestimated the 09 car's potential and made such a classic management blunder in December. In the past, I've tried to give them (Yeah, them, the Tokyo sitting management that kept listening to Nick Fry, sent a motorcycle engineer out, etc. etc.) the benefit of the doubt with the view they were simply not F-1 race savvy.

But now I realize that maybe too complicated. Maybe they just thought that some guy named "Brown..........Rass Brown" was running the team and not "the Ross Brawn". Simple mistake that anyone could make, no?

Anyone know of a website that has video highlights of F1 races? It seems that FIA are real nazis when it comes to re-broadcasting, just like the NFL.

Thanks!

PS. I know F1 site has them but for some reason they take forever to post them.

Quote of the day

kind of a "where are they now?" joke
Honda - the boss who decided to quit F1 is now sitting in a bar, comparing notes with the man from Decca Records, who turned down the Beatles.

I don't think Mercedes would like Brawn GP placing a Honda badge on the car...

Regardless, this season has been a riot! Kimi is my favorite driver with Jenson being my second simply because he's underrated and has never been given a chance. Kimi though is a proven driver with a championship under his belt who suffers from "I'd rather be driving something else in another sport" syndrome...haha

I've bought my tickets for the Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and am sitting in the Southside Grand Stand. Will snap many a photos and write a review once it happens.

Go Brawn GP!

Man, I wish I could be there. :) Good for you! Brawn GP just came out their their intro fan wear too so you should be able to pick up a BGP shirt, jacket, hat.

Speaking of the Abu Dhabi GP:

This is the reason why I don't believe FIA should continue with their Anti McLaren approach. A slap in the hand with a fine would have been fair. Imagine if they did that to MS back in the days, with Beneton and Ferrari!!!

As for the potential possiblilty, I do not welcome this idea.

LOL, yeah right, Hambone to replace Rubens Barichello.

And even if it was possible, he doesn't deserve it, not as much as Button and Barichello do, not by a long shot.

I'm as sentimental about Ruby and the Killer B's as anyone, but I'm not betting against it. Hamo could attract a lot of sponsorship. The right thing for us isn't necessarily the right thing for Ross and his fledgling business plan. JMHOICBW

bah, I call shenanigans!

Keep in mind that Brawn is powered by MB.

I highly doubt it will happen, but weird things happens in F1.

So what if Brawn is powered by MB. Hambone's contract is tied to McLaren, not MB. Not just that, Button/Barichello have a contract with Brawn.

You might not remember when Honda had a contract with Williams. Prost had a contract with Honda, Villenueve had a contract with BMW, Senna had... Get the point?

Contract means nothing. There is always a loophole.

Is there's a prove RB has a one year contract with Brawn without strings attach to it? Speculation from a month ago - Bruno Senna might replace RB if he failed to perform half way through the season.

True, but I still call shenanigans!

Re: The Hamo to Brawn Dominoes

The diffuser ruling today. Although not likely it could go against Ross, weakening their advantage over the field. Ruby's good, but Hamo has proved he wrings more out of the car.

The McLaren hearing on the 29th will obviously be the pivotal piece of the puzzle. If they get a slap on the wrist and allowed to keep their points this season and next, Hamo isn't leaving.

The Virgin sponsorship plays a part. Sir Richard may well think he's done his job and gotten the best bang for the buck and now the thrill is gone. Look at all the high profile attention he's gotten so far after committing less than a mill or whatever the paltry sum is. He and the whole deal may just fade away. And then what's Ross got for sponsors? Hamo's like Tiger Woods; having sponsors going after him can only help everyone surrounding him.

Sorry to put it out there. I'm hoping like everyone here that the home team stays together. But it's plausible business speculation and as has been noted, "anything can happen".

Agree with your whole post, Ted, right up until the point that you hope the existing team stays together. For the long term success of the team, having Hamo in RB's seat would be a huge upgrade in terms of sponsorships and a pretty good upgrade in terms of getting the most out of the car.
