What is APPLE planning?

I think if anyone was going to change from Apple, I think the connector is a great reason to do it. You can buy any other cell phone and never worry about this since they use USB. I would imagine there are people that will need to shell out $50 plus just an adapters. That would piss me off. Just my 2 cents.

That's what I'm thinking. It's the sole reason I stuck with my iPhone for so long. well that in the fact they were the only game in town for a long period of time. but now with all these new phones coming out, that are on par or better. I'm thinking about switching my phone and provider at same time. As far as computers go I love my Mac. But they seem to be lacking in the phone game.

I don't think they are lacking. The new phone is on par with everyone else for most things. I just hate how they rape you on stupid thinks like an adapter. I much prefer USB.

Initial impressions:
1) No NFC -- this is becoming a standard feature in Android phones. I suspect the iPhone 5S will include this, and all the Apple fans will congratulate Apple for inventing it.
NFC is still not fully supported. Griping about it is just a way for Android users to claim they have a feather in their caps. It's really not that worth while. The funny thing is, NFC will not take off until Apple decides to jump on it as well.

I always liked how Apple would integrate in with everything else I own. If you take that away I have no need for it. Or I could just wait for the market to catch up with the phone. Keep my current phone and sell my upgrade on eBay.

That's actually why I was hoping the iPhone 5 would support it. NFC is cool tech, but as long as it is Android only it will remain a niche item. If Apple had included it, in six months' time it would be ubiquitous, which is good for everyone, especially Android users.

That's the story of the entire computer industry. Back in the early 90s, I was selling computers at a store, and we were always told about how the little accessories like printer cables are where most of the profit is made, and we had to encourage people to buy them.

Oh of course. Think how many millions they are going make off a part that probably costs $1 to make. But, is it worth it if they piss a lot of people off that all their stuff doesn't work anymore and they buy an S3.

I wonder if it is an active adapter. The reason for the cost might be there is a chip inside to do the translation, kind of like the various Thunderbolt->VGA/DVI adapters.

No clue. I really like how the new connector can be put in any way you want. I hate that with my iPad. Actually, hate that on USB too.

I doubt most people are gonna to the S3 or any other android phone because of the new connector. I know I'm still getting the new iPhone, as it will be a big jump from iPhone 4 for me.

As far as using micro USB, apple will never use it IMO. The dock connector has always provided more functionality than USB could ever provide.

I dont have much experience with it. What can it do that USB can't?

It made it significantly easier to make accessories by providing analog and other simple signals.

Analog stereo-> Speaker docks don't need a DAC to turn digital audio into analog.
Analog line-in-> Microphones and audio gear doesn't need to generate digital audio.
Analog composite and S-video video out-> Back in the old days, allowed iPods to play video on TVs. No chance your CRT could play digital video over USB.
Serial I/O-> Simple serial port communication with devices
3.3v power-> Power for your accessory
Firewire-> For the older iPods to transfer data before USB 2 was around.

While I'll hold onto my iPad3, I just don't see why I should get the iPhone5. I still have an OG Droid and seriously need to upgrade but frankly, I just don't get the allure of Apple, even after owning the iPad 2 and 3. The GSIII or RazrHD seem appealing, and some of the new Sonys look to have great stats (13 mp Carl Zeis lense?).

Quite frankly though, everything out there seems underwhelming. The iPhone5 is no exception.

I would suggest waiting until you play with it at the store before judging. It's always best to check it out in person so you can decide on more than specs.

There is a google thread yet most of the Android fanboys post in the Apple thread to trash the company & it's products. And people call Apple users sheep?

Yep. I have 100 mini and micro usb cables that anyone at work can just have. You can buy them off ebay for the price of shipping. 30-40 cents shipped. Charge your phone anywhere. It's UNIVERSAL....
Apple is take a 2 cent cable and making the sheep pay $30 for it. 100% profit.
lol

It's kind of like turning your head to look at a car wreck. You know you shouldn't, but it's about to crash and you can't look away...

I don't think leveling valid criticisms is trashing the company. I am an Android user, but I work with iPhones every day. I don't consider myself a hater; only someone who looked at the available options and made a choice. There's a lot to like about the iPhone 5. Would it make for a more interesting post if I gushed all over the features I found cool?
