Unofficial weight reduction thread

I'm about 1160kgs with maybe 1/3 tank fuel.
Still have a few thing planned.
I'm going to reloacate the Alternator to where the A/C compressor was & make a Billet Alternator Mount/Engine Mount.
New Lightweight Flywheel with Custom Made Carbon Clutch.
Lexan engine hatch
Alluminium Clutch pedal
SOS Billet RH Engine mount
I've also replaced every unstressed bolt with Alluminium bolts. Every little bit counts!

I would pay you to make an extra alternator mount @ AC location.

I'm about 1160kgs ...
I've also replaced every unstressed bolt with Aluminium bolts.

1160kg (2557lb for our US friends) is very impressive ! I'm still at about 1250. The hardest decisions for me are the air con and interior sound deadening & carpets (I assume you've removed or replaced both of these). I did remove them from my Porsche 968CS and it was OK except in Classic Adelaide rally sitting in a queue at the start of a closed section in 35+ degrees Celsius, wearing full race gear incl. helmet telling myself it was still worth removing the air con :-)

Where do you get aluminium bolts? (or 'aluminum bolts' for our US friends!) and what is an example of larger bolt sizes and where you have used them?

Whilst i worked in the UK, Demontweaks used to sell them .I bought a large stock of M6 & M8 bolts,Nuts & washers. They don't sell them anymore & i haven't been able to find them anywhere. However ProBolt sell similar anodized nuts & bolts. they are quite expensive though.
I basically fitted them everywhere apart from suspension. The whole car is pretty much M6 & M8 I have no idea how much i've saved, at a guess i'd say at least 5kgs.

I still have full interior, carpets & body deadner. I did remove the sound deadner on the rear firewall however. That's quite heavy & didn't make much difference to noise.

Tried searching, couldn't find an answer. What is the weight of the traction control system in an NA1? What is involved in deleting it?

not much because the TCS system uses the ABS system to control the brakes and a few small sensors like steering wheel position. I think the only weight saving would be the TCS control unit (behind the driver seat in US cars), maybe 1 pound ? (see the NSX workshop manual page 19-74)

My NSX just went through a little diet today. I just removed about 20.4 lbs by removing the floor mats and floor carpets and some other extra stuff. I left the carpets on the center console section. I was adding the weight of the items I have removed so far and they are:

Floor carpets + miscelanous small bits: 20.4 lbs
Engine cover: 15.4 lbs
Trunk tools: 15lbs
CD changer in trunk + head unit changed: 4 lbs
Trunk Carpet: Going to assume 5 lbs
Spare Tire: 31.6 lbs
Spare Tire bracket: 2.4 lbs

Total: 93.8 lbs

I still want to remove the sound deadening from behind the seats which would put me at 103.8 lbs of reduced weight I think.

That's as much of free weight that I'm willing to remove. I want to keep my AC, and other luxury features. I'm thinking of painting the floor black though to give a cleaner appearance when viewed from outside. Right now it's silver so it's very obvious that there is no carpet on the floor. Hopefully I'll loose more weight later on when I start replacing the exhaust, the wheels, etc.

I'm addicted to this thread. Does anyone know the weight of the NSX-R Front Sway Bar and Front and Rear Chassis Bars compared to the standard OEM NSX components?

These are must have luxeries.

The 200lb delete does not include the stereo system.

My list is similar to those lists posted earlier in this thread.

I am thinking about removing the AC stuff (compressor, fans, condensors, AC lines). I wonder how many lbs are those parts.

Or Does it? Saw your ad

Just corner balanced my car with a full tank of fuel. 3100lbs. I have DF seats Taitec lw exhaust, brembo bbk on all 4 corners and removed spare tire, tools and bracket. Df rear carbon wing, carbon engine cover. Ccw classic 8.5 and 10.5 wheels. The car has a ctsc. I figure I pulled 150lbs out with the seats exhaust and spare tire parts. Car at 3100 full seems heavy

I suspect that you added at least a fair amount of weight with your CTSC, right? I agree it sounds heavy but a lot of weight loss guys won't weigh with a full tank of fuel either. So, full tank + CTSC could make a noticeable difference. Nice job getting your NSX weighed and reporting the results to us!

Well now i have a true weight of the car with full tank. Not sure what stock seats weigh but the downforce ones must have pulled a fair amount out. The exhaust also and the spare. The other minor things like rear spoiler and engine cover are not much but it all adds up. I think the wheels might have added some also. I did weigh the tires without the rims all 4 came to exactly 100lbs. I'm running dunlop direzza 215/275

you'd be surprised the oem rear deck spoiler is heavy feeling compared to the downforce,I sadly did not weigh the two.

I was very surprised at the difference. I read its 7lbs lighter and it feels like it. The DF wing is very light. Just also added a comptech carbon airbox lid which also is much lighter then the plastic one.

I'd like to know the full specs on those front 215's if you can:
- 17" or 18"
- profile 35 - 40 - 45?
- weight rating

I have a DF wing, weighs 7 lbs, stock was 12 lbs. One of the best car enhancements I've ever indulged in, superbly crafted, perfect fit, effective. I can even live with it being somewhat expensive (don't tell DF that )

215/40/17 and 275/35/18 And yes the finish and carbon on the DF wing is by far the nicest i have ever seen

I wonder how it compares to the procar one which is priced at $2500.
For older cars one of the best bang for the weight savings is to swap out to an aluminum bumper beam front and rear.

Also, take a look at the NRG NSX-R wing from Dali. I saw it recently and the quality and fit is quite good. Cheapest in price from all R wings out right now also. Of course, like with all CF products.. they've got their own unique CF weave.

I would like to see some other cars that have been weighed. Honestly with the weight I have taken out based on people's posts I would expected my car to be lighter then 3100 full. Is the curb weight withno fluids at all?

Tried searching, couldn't find an answer. What is the weight of the traction control system in an NA1? What is involved in deleting it?

3.2 lbs for the unit, 1.25 lbs for the step motor on the throttle body. Been so long since i did it, i think i just pulled the control unit and the switch in the dash. I may have had to fabricate a small alum plate to replace the step motor. Pull the fuses, relays of course. You may want to leave the dash switch. I mounted a V1 detector display in the switch area.

FWIW i've found that scales vary too much to bother with, so i simply start at 3010 and deduct what each part weighs. And of course the fuel load is tough to deal with.

Yes scales do vary but I used 4 scales which were calibrated. So the weight I got was fairly accurate

3100 may seem a bit high but it depends what you include. Mine weighed 2795 last time, main factors being:
- top speed headers
- Taitec GTLW muffler
- Rays CE28N 17"all round (very light 25lbs less than my Work Wheels)
- Falken RT615 tyres
- Odyssey PC680 battery
- Fidanza lightweight flywheel
- Sparco steering wheel
- Stoptech brakes all round
- DF wing
- aluminum front bumper bar
- no spare wheel
- no jack
- no CD changer
- no engine cover
- no carpet or tool kit in boot
actual weight on scales was 3020, but subtract 225 lbs for driver and 38 litres of fuel I had on board (about 9 gallons @ 6.6lbs/gal) gave 2795 lbs.

If I'd had a full tank on board (around 130lbs) then it would have weighed close to 3100 on scales. So your weighing may be correct and reasonable

Curb weight is with all fluids and a full tank of gas.
