Unofficial weight reduction thread

That sounds like a joke but STMPO was able to really get the weight down to an unbelievable number swapping to a K series motor...

Did anyone remove the headlight lens/bulbs/and wiring parts; thus leaving the brackets and covers?

I plan on doing this and just getting piaa fog lights as my headlights and mounting them in the bumper.

How much weight savings with this diet?

Also, took out the front hood prop rod as well. Don't think anyone mentioned this.

chime in please.

Most of the headlight weight is the raising mechanism itself. I made a new prop rod from a CF rod. A homemade swivel on one end and a rubber stopper on the other. If desired i can take pic's.

Charlee, you are not the only one with that idea about the lights. I almost never drive at night. The NSX is a second car for me, so ompletely avoiding driving my NSX at night is no sacrifice. If I did any conversion, it would have to be completely reversible. Please let me kncow how it comes out.

Another note regarding lighting. I recently bought a pair of headlight covers to see if there is a way to mount a light that shines through a clear panel in the cover. I will post if I can come up with anything.

This is a great idea. I will see how this works out. Starting this project tomorrow.

I updated to 2002 headlights. i then removed the entire wiring harness from under the hood & inside the car. as I have an aftermarket ECU & 2002 ABS I set about removing all unnessecary wiring. I removed all the wiring for the popup headlights, ABS, TCS, Climate control & stereo ect. I saved approx 15kgs.

I still have the Engine bay & trunk area to purge. I'm guessing another 4-5 kgs.

Huge job though. took me a few weeks. checking every wire.

front headlights now deleted. got a set of piaa 55w as driving lights if ever necessary. i am very happy with this 24lbs diet with the removal of lens, motor, some wiring, and ballasts. i left the carriage and headlight cover. this diet is completely reversable as well.

After removing 200 lbs of excess for the last couple of weeks, I had the chance to take it out today. It is like night and day . My car pulls really hard throughout the entire band. This rush and addiction makes me want to further remove more excess; but that would mean giving up some of the luxeries. Hmmm, I do not like this crossroad .

Not familair with them but I assume they are 2.0 and 2.4 liter engines with less power than NSX v6, so how did lighter engine in NSX work out performance wise?

The K series engines are amazing. It is not as expensive to mod compare to the nsx and it is capable of making 300+ whp NA with fewer mods compared to the nsx. You are taking away from the nsx though.

I would never even consider putting a K motor in an nsx unless it was rebuilding a totally wrecked car into an race car, but just out of curiosity, does anyone know the difference in dressed engine weight between the two engines?

The Ironic part is your buying parts from my cars like weightloss.

These are must have luxeries.

The 200lb delete does not include the stereo system.

My list is similar to those lists posted earlier in this thread.

I am thinking about removing the AC stuff (compressor, fans, condensors, AC lines). I wonder how many lbs are those parts.

Compressor/adjuster = 16lb.
2 condensors w/fans = 15lb.
AC lines = still on car.

would you post the P/N of the PIAA lights?

For those who have removed the in-trunk tool kit: did you remove just the tools or were you able to remove the entire (foam) tray?

Thanks!

You can remove the foam as well I removed (tool kit foam, carpet, antenna, cd player, phone) But id did start with just the kit and foam

I wanted to keep the trunk carpet so i had to keep the foam piece to support the carpet. I was thinking about skelotonizing it a bit, but then i realized that it does a lot to insulate the heat from the exhaust below. You need to maintain some insulation IMO. Unless you deliver pizza's of course.

I thought quite a bit about making or having a new carpet made from a lighter material but i can't save much at all.

Sorry I wasnt able to get back to you sooner. Here is an ebay listing of the piaa's I installed.

I wanted to take it out at night before I responed. They are definately not as bright and full as the stock headlights. The beams are more direct to whatever they are pointing at. Therefore, I projected them straight forward. However, they are superbright to oncoming traffic; so no worries about other drivers. Despite the loss in illumination, I am happy with the weight reduction. Thinking taking off AC stuff; but not sure if I want to tackle that right now.

Also, be sure to have fasteners ready before you start or else you will not be able to reinstall the wheel liners.

so wayne, what is the dry weight of your NSX then ?

I'm about 1160kgs with maybe 1/3 tank fuel.
Still have a few thing planned.
I'm going to reloacate the Alternator to where the A/C compressor was & make a Billet Alternator Mount/Engine Mount.
New Lightweight Flywheel with Custom Made Carbon Clutch.
Lexan engine hatch
Alluminium Clutch pedal
SOS Billet RH Engine mount
I've also replaced every unstressed bolt with Alluminium bolts. Every little bit counts!
