The Official 2011 F1 Thread....Now That 2010 is Over

Re: 24.75 hrs. to go

Practice tomorrow nite. Can't wait. Warming up the DVR, the blender and the pop corn popper as we speak.

BTW, what's the 411 on Ponyboy? Can't believe he's completely MIA on this thread when he seems so normal on others. Still bummed about Fred's bad luck, er.....mistake last year? Or...................Rebel, did you beat him up in a PM and hurt his feelings?:biggrin::rolleyes:

meh.

I have no idea, I'm not as active as I used to be when I owned an NSX. ~20 hrs till FP1!

Re: Hamo and Pirellis

So just to be clear, you've been watching all the races for the last few years and don't think that Hamo deserves his well known reputation for punishing tires? And that this year's tire design won't be a problem for him? Do I have that right?

Rebel, you gonna address the Button vs. Hamo raw talent comparison? This is your turf.

Sure Hamo is hard on tires, thats because he is soo fast. Whatever time he loses in the pit, he'll regain on track .
While the pirellis may be a problem for him, it will be that way for every other driver. BTW, in reference to talent, rebel already knows the fact .

I need to go make sure the DVR is set for tonight! As for the tires, I really hope Merc gets their act together on their tire strategy. Last year was horrible and quite a few positions were lost due to the tire strat IMO.

I do think Button has a great opportunity here, but at the same time an even greater pressure to perform. We shall see

Playing Fantasy F1 for the first time this season. My line-up below:

Driver 1 : S Vettel
Driver 2 : N Heidfeld
Driver 3 : K Kobayashi
Driver 4 : H Kovalainen
Driver 5 : J D'Ambrosio
Car : Lotus
Engine : Cosworth

Not a fan of any of these guys but the cost gave me no other choice. I really wanted to pick up Button & Vettel but together they were just too pricey.

Watching FP1 too, no times have been posted yet, right?

Well that's it.

Webber
Vettel
Alonso
Rosberg
Barrichello
Button
Hamilton
Schumacher
Kobayashi
Petrov
Massa
Heidfield
.....
Redbull ultra fast and consistent, notice Rosberg faster than Michael, hope it does not become a trend.

Looks like those last minute changes to the Macca are paying off. They're doing better than most were expecting, so far. Button ahead of Hamilton. ;)

Button is fastest! Yeah!

http://live.autosport.com/commentary.php/id/321

61 min: That lap from the world champion now means the top four are covered by just 0.160s. His team-mate Webber is fifth and back in the pits.

60 min: Sebastian Vettel - now on the soft compound - is set for a move towards the front. He crosses the line in 1m26.014s to go fourth.

60 min: Kovalainen moves up to 19th quickest with his ninth lap of the session. Team-mate Trulli is 20th.

58 min: Alonso tops the middle sector as he moves up to third quickest with a soft tyre effort in his Ferrari.

56 min: So Button now leads the pack with that 1m25.854s lap, with Hamilton now second, Webber third, Schumacher fourth, Vettel fifth and Massa sixth.

55 min: Vettel vaults up the list to fifth spot with a time of 1m26.604s.

55 min: Button reports understeer to his McLaren team as he laps on the softer compound. Despite that, he takes the benchmark time with a 1m25.854s.

54 min: Hamilton tops the times with a 1m25.986s effort in his McLaren.

54 min: Webber improves again with the soft tyre. He is up to second spot with a lap of 1m26.283s.

54 min: Hamilton clocks the fastest first two sectors and is on for a big improvement.

53 min: With the race-condition test of the rear wing system beginning shortly, this is clearly the teams' best chance of going for quick times on the softer tyres this afternoon.

53 min: Vettel is still out there running laps in the high 1m30s bracket, while more and more drivers are opting for a soft tyre run.

52 min: Button tops the times with a new benchmark of 1m26.156s.

51 min: Button also has soft tyres on his McLare as he sets the fastest first sector time of the session.

Only a well-funded team like McLaren can afford to ditch their exhaust system design, put on a simpler one, and still have their car go that fast. Money talks, indeed.

Nice job Jenson!!
Sergio Perez with an impressive run in 8th place!

I'm happy so far, but then again, this is only testing.

Re: Oh yeah, I'm there......

Ok guys let's see those predictions for the race.

I'll post mine..............just as soon as I can find my magic 8 ball.

Actually, I'm more interested to see if HRT can get 2 cars on track. No way they'll make the 107% rule, but just having 8 wheels in the Q-1 will be great.

Re: Off to an interesting start

Pretty impressive display by Vettel. If and when RB gets the main KERS going, look out. An Macca's got to be  too, especially since Butt got balked.

And good to see a mix with Sauber and TR both in the top 10. But still, quite a time spread from pole to 10.

Bummer about HRT not making the show. Well maybe not, since they had to borrow one of Williams back end/gear boxes. Guess they didn't deserve it this weekend.

Prediction for tomorrow (race0

Hamilton, Button, Rosberg.

Vettel impressive as usual. There was a bit of sandbagging in there as well?

Looks like things are not too radically different from last year so far other than Sauber and Renault looking quite good. Sad to hear the "tires went off after lap 2" comment from Schumi... Perhaps they should have come out to get some laps in before 3/4 of the quali session was over

indeed mclaren has really closed the winter gap and it is just like the first half of last season RB vs Mclaren. Should be an exciting 1st lap 142mph av speed on that semi road course is bonkers.

Anyone see Vettel's tires after qualifying? They were pretty beat up. I see Button on podium, if not winning the race.

Re: Let's see.........what is the phrase again?

meh.

I see what you did there.
