Injector Cleaner

Thanks for posting that Ken one other NSX owner told me to use the Redline to and I will try that he said it's around $9.95 a bottle.

BG 44K is made of highly concentrated Techroline. The Chevron bottle you see at Grand Auto's, Pep Boys, etc is a watered down version.

Most mechanics will swear by BG 44K if your injectors are very dirty.

Barn Man (NSX tech in Tennessee who is also on these forums) also answered my question about additives, as follows:

"I personally have yet to tear into an NSX motor. I once dropped one out for grins to do a 90k and a T-belt, but have never had to tear into one. The only problem I've personally seen with our engines is (Like Mark B said ) overheating deposits. We see them VERY regularly in newer model Legend motors that have been driven for long periods of time on a busted top tank, thus causing the motor to overheat. The only other model that we see busted top tanks in is the newer (94 to 98) Integra's. But, they seem to be a bit more resilient to overheating. Plus, the radiators are less expensive so the customers tend to replace them quicker. (Yes people actually opt to wait on repairing a cracked radiator at times). This in itself has caused us to do MANY head gasket jobs on Legends.

Back to the original question. I don't recommend any type of additive. If the car needed it, Momma Honda would have said so. After all, they could make money off of the sale of these products. Like Mark said, they some can burn the cat out. So why even take the risk. We RARELY have injector problems. I see no need in wasting the money, or risking the integrity of the cats.

The most common problem we see is customers that think 7,500 mile + oil changes are sufficient. THEY AREN'T! I will argue until I'm blue in the face with customers about oil change intervals. In our particular part of the blue ball, there is a LOT of humidity all year round. This in itself has caused a number of issues in the engines of our cars. In our part of the US, we have MANY EGR problems. We have been told by American Honda that our part of the country has more EGR clogged cars than any other part of the country. This coupled with the fact that there are lots of hills, curves, dust and other conditions that are deemed severe conditions, take a toll on the oil. One of, if not the most important thing you can do for your engine is to change the oil on a regular basis. This will keep your engine happier than almost anything else you can do. EXCEPT FOR PUTTING A SUPERCHARGER ON IT!

Have a safe and happy Holiday all,
Barn Man..."

Note, too, the relevance here of his comment regarding the frequency of oil changes, which may contradict the advice given by Bruce above.

What exactly was my advice in regards to the frequency of oil changes??? What was BarnMan???It appears neither one of us gave an exact figure. This topic was refering to "gas additives", in which seems Mark and I seem to equaly agree upon. I'm sure Mark and BarnMan would appreciate it if they could give their own opinions directly relating to this discussion. My intentions are only to help others with what I can. NXTSY what are your’s???

Hey, Bruce, no need to get your nose out of joint or think that there are some ulterior motives here. Most of us are here to share information, listen to what others have to say, and then decide for ourselves what makes sense for our own cars.

To that end, I was only comparing the comment you made earlier in this topic:

"I don't even feel changing the oil every 3000 miles is necessary.(neither does Honda) Today's oils, filters and engine designs have greatly improved."

with Barn Man's:

"The most common problem we see is customers that think 7,500 mile + oil changes are sufficient. THEY AREN'T!"

My purpose in pointing these opinions out was not to quibble over the numbers, but rather, to point out that there are a variety of opinions out there. If someone took your statement that 3000 miles is too quick, and interpreted it as meaning that Honda's recommended 7500 miles is okay, that would contradict Barn Man's advice. If someone took Barn Man's advice that 7500 miles is too long, and interpreted it as meaning that the oft-quoted 3000 miles is advisable, that would contradict your advice. Perhaps neither of those interpretations was intended, either by you or by Barn Man, and that's fine too. Perhaps you both feel that oil changes should be done every 4,832 miles, no more and no less. That would be fine too. In any case, I'm sure that most NSXprime members are going to read all these opinions and decide for themselves exactly how frequently to change their own oil.

FWIW, I change mine every 3,750 miles, because that interval aligns with all the other service intervals. But I realize that many folks swear by the owner's manual's recommendation, just as many other folks swear by the old 3,000-mile standard. It's no big deal to me. "Chaque a son gout", as the French would say, or "Each to his own taste".

My, my aren't we a little testy today.

Awww, jeeeez, can't we even have a discussion about something as simple as injector cleaner and oil changes without people looking for trouble where none exists?????? Stop reading into things!! It's electrons, ok? No facial expressions, no tone of voice, no body language, and, hopefully, no attitude! The mail lists have been ruined (that's MY opinion, not a blanket statement so no debates, ok?)and the forums have been having a rash of trolls (kids out of school again). Can't the regulars at least play nice together? Is there something in the water?
