I am the only one who gets run off the road by SUV's when driving the NSX?

yeah, I hate getting anywhere near an suv or truck...I try to stay away but on our busy 2 lane roads its either stay behind them and have them kick up rocks all over my car or get next to them and take the chance of thempushing me out of my lane :o( oh well....and most of the people who run me off the road are these little teeny tiny women driving these huge expeditions and suburbans and they can barely see over the dash board!! (sorry-not sexist as I am a girl and small also, but thats why I drive a sports car, not something I cant see out of!)

here's another picture illustration with the suv mirror just slightly above the nsx roofline.

Shame on you SJones! I know thats your SUV in the driveway  maybe its you that keeps running me off the roads around here

You know, I dislike SUV's as much as anyone, but the arguments about the height of the windows and mirrors are kind of ridiculous. You can look down through a window or mirror. Mostly, it's just people not looking that is the problem. BTW, even in an NSX, if a 2-year-old was standing directly behind the car, you couldn't see them, and could back over them. The only solution is to know your surroundings before backing - check before you get into the car, and be aware of anyone approaching. Of course, I don't expect anyone to be backing on the highway.

I had nearly the same thing happen just last week!!

Was with a couple buddies out on the ranch - really rural area. Out of nowhere, this quail comes darting out in front of us and opened fire with a 28 gauge! Peppered my friend square in the face, but he'll be okay it seems. So watch out for quail in addition to angry SUV drivers.

Any relation to Dick Cheney?:D

... And last but not least, carry a paintball gun behind your seat  , they cut you off you pepper their SUV in mutilpe pretty colors

Although I laughed heartily at this... when I started to think about the consequences of such an action, I think this could land you in a lot of trouble with the law!

I'm sure pointing and firing a projectile from a weapon at another vehicle is not exactly legal (even in the US) ...

The only thing I hate more than getting run off the road by SUV's is getting sandwiched between 2 suvs in a busy parking lot! now normally I am the car parked diagonally in the back taking up as many spots as possible, but sometimes...you just cant do that...and it seems every time I actually have to park in a regular spot, when I come out, theres an Excursion on one side and a Expedition on the other! takes me a damn hour just to get out!

It's not SUV's per se, it's the people who drive them.

Even in cars, people don't know how to check their mirrors. And they don't know how to set their mirrors.

Ever been directly behind a car and looked in the side view mirrors? Can you see the driver? You shouldn't be able to. If you start looking you'll see that most people set their side mirrors that way, to look straight down the side of the car. Which doesn't do squat except give them another view of what they can already see in their center rear view mirror.

The correct way to set up side view mirrors is with just a touch of overlap with the rear view mirror. When a car is overtaking, it should just begin to appear in the side view mirror as it is leaving the rear view mirror. This affords the widest view of the side, rear, and side of the car. I never need to head-check to make a lane change (although I do anyway), and I never "miss" a car next to me.

So true!!!

I see I'm not the only one who notices this!

Interesting- I never knew (or thought of) that. Mine are set up so that I can barely see the rear side of my car (to give me perspective) and mostly show the next lane or two over. Is that still too focused down the rear and not enough to the side?

You are not alone... Now although this has not happened to me in my NSX (my first NSX was Black so it is not the colour BTW). My daily driver is a '89 Prelude in white. I have had one major accident and many many near misses with f*ucking SUV drivers changing lanes into me!

Now the Prelude is a least a 6" taller than my NSX and therefore should be more visible... But apparently SUV drivers's have a massive blindspot where they have trouble seeing normal cars in the rear passenger side.

These days, I treat ALL SUV's like Semi-trailer learner drivers!... I assume they have not seen me and becasuse they are inherently selfish pigs on the road, I expect them to try and hit me!

In my NSX... I go back to the the tactics I used to keep alive on my motorbike for so many years...

1. Drive with my (fog lights in the NSX) lights on... Day time included
2. Try to at all times to keep ahead of the traffic...

I own a 91 Prelude :)

I get that once in a while as well... but only with 18 wheelers. Plus I'm lowered about 1.5" and I think it being white helps, no offense to black cars.

Allow me to illustrate the problem.

My car isn't even lowered and that Excursion isn't the biggest SUV on the road but my roof is below their window. I drive this car even more defensively than I did my motorcycle. My car is a daily driver so yeah, I've dodged a few.

Now seeing is believing! That is amazing to see that our cars don't even reach up to their windows. I always drive defensively.

Mine is silver and now it's totaled! Tuesday, an elderly lady in a Suburban decided to merge right without signal as I was gradually passing. At 40 MPH she suddenly changed lanes (and having weight advantage) pushed me into a parked Silverado 3500 crew cab dually 4x4 truck (JimBob really needs a monster truck like that in the city).... Hello trailer hitch and bumper big enough to tow a tow truck! CAAARRRAAASSSHHHH. NSX's really do fold up nicely when needed. Anyone have a set of stock (or any that'll fit) wheels w/ tires that I can get cheap to swap out my ROJAS before the insurance company takes pictures and totals it? HELP!

Wow, you guys really have it rough.:frown:
I drive my NSX every day and have never had some idiot almost cut me off.
You guys should take a vacation here, rent a nice fast car and enjoy driving here for a couple of weeks.

What do we get in return? I have a set of 15/16 but I'm in Seattle. Where are you at?? Another option is that you don't have to do that to insurance company, unless they are paying for those aftermarket rims (on top of the totaled value) , or else, you could take them back, you bought them, they belong to you.

The goal of the position of the mirrors is to maximize the viewing area. The ultimate goal is to have cars in the adjacent lane always visible, without having to crane your neck around.

From each side: cars immediately adjacent should be visible out the side window. Moving backward from there, when a car is no longer visible in the side window, the side-view mirror on the right side of the car should then pick it up. Moving around the back of the car, when the car is no longer visible in the side view mirror, the rear view mirror should be able to see it. It's the same for either side of the car.

So, to answer your question, if you can "barely see the rear side of (your) car" and still not have any points where another car is not visible (blind spot), your mirrors are set OK.

The whole trick is to eliminate all blind spots.

Oh, another important point: when I say "seeing another car", I also mean ANY vehicle, including motorcycles, which provide a much, much smaller footprint.

I was cut off and almost run off the road by, of all things, a Honda Element!! The "lady" driving it just changed lanes into me with NO directional and caused me to slam on the brakes, swerve and hit the horn all at the same time! I leaned on the horn for a good 10 seconds to let her know how wrong she has. At the next stop I was able to pull up along next to her and she refused to aknowledge she did anything wrong:mad:

There is a saying in Florida that directionals are "options" on cars and therefore do not have to be used to indicate a turn or a lane change. I think that people who don't use them are far more dangerous than people who exceed the speed limit and should be ticketed by law enforcement IMO:smile:

I don't think it is just the NSX. My beater car, (hate to admit) 1993 Toyota Corolla, medium green along with my NSX and S2000 are all targets of the SUVs. Most of them are driven by soccer moms with a cell phone stuck to their ear.

A cop actually witnessed a Toyota Sequoia cut into my lane while the front of my Corolla was almost to her front door, on her left side. We were slowing for an accident and the cop was stopping all lanes. She just decided to come over without looking (phone stuck to her head), only about 30 feet from the cop. I had to slam the brakes and swerve quickly to my left. The cop walked over and gave the lady a tongue lashing. I smiled and drove away....

...I would like to see a law that includes large SUVs and Vans out of the left lanes on major highways like large commercial trucks.

Just wondering but, everytime I drive my NSX, I get run off the road like 4 times a day by people in SUV's who either just cant see me right next to them becuase that would involve them actually looking to see if there is someone next to them, or they just assume since I am the smaller car its my job to get out of their way! I know the nsx is really low to the ground, but damn! this is getting rediculous! I get afraid everytime I get near an SUV...does this happen to anyone else when they drive their X? (oh, and when they are trying to merge into me and I lay on the horn, they always flick me off like its my fault, when I have been in my lane for like 10 minutes!)
sorry...just ranting
Alexandra

Hey Alexandra, maybe they just want to get attention of the chick in the NSX:wink: ?

Gradual lane change????.............The crack smoked by some of you must be good. That's mistake # 1. Who in their right mind makes a gradual lane change? If you are already in that lane it eliminates her from changing into that lane...... why??? Einstein says because there's already a car in that lane. YOURS!!!! LOWER the risk by being in that lane. Be at the extreme ends of driving instead of the middle of the road style of driving. Strictly my opinion. I'm telling you, normal people will get out of the way of a person who is VERY DECISIVE as to their intentions instead of dilly dallying around and making indecisive lane changes and so forth. There is a gas pedal to use to change lanes instead of the idiotic brake pedal. How many drivers speed up to change lanes (a driving habit) instead of hitting the brakes. VERY VERY VERY VERY FEW. I can bet you that almost every lane change involves hitting the brakes.

Sounds like the definition of defensive driving is to allow room for a vehicle to change lanes into then drive defensively like you lost your testicles and let the other driver dictate pace and location of their vehicle. When the vehicle takes that spot or wants it then you are ready to hit the brake, honk the horn or pull next to them in another lane and give them useless dogstares, the finger, or lip service..... (which, if you would have just stayed ahead you'd still be in that lane any way). What kind of crap is that? If you get cut off you get everything you deserve. By letting them see an open space next to their vehicle you just invited the disaster. What if the front 1/2 of your X were at the grill or further in front? Would Bo(SUV)zo change into that lane? If you say yes UR LYING!!!

SUV = families and kids
SUV = cell phones... name an SUV driver w/o a cell phone and I'd say, "ur dumber than you look."
SUV = non serious driver...... you know they're preoccupied with something other than driving.
SUV = multiple passengers i.e. distracted driving.
