Gran Turismo 5 Prologue in 2007

Yeah, the buttons are pressure sensitive, but that is IMHO the lamest way to play the game. I much prefer the dual analog stick configuration that GT has been using for years (using the L and R buttons like paddle shifters, the left analog for steering and the right for acceleration/braking). I never warmed to using the trigger buttons on the Xbox controller for playing Forza...and only the Sony controller has the analog sticks paired up in such a way that you can really comfortably play racing games as GT use them.

More PS3 games seem to be using the analog triggers (i.e. Motorstorm, Burnout: Paradise)...just feels a bit awkward to me.

Of course, the only real way to play GT is using the 900 degree Logitech force feedback wheels like the Driving Force Pro or G25. :D

The real/full GT5 game isn't expected until Christmas, 2008.

One of the guys in the office got the Blu-ray version of GT5: Prologue, so I played it for a few hours yesterday...long enough to finish the C Class events (six golds, two silvers), golds in three one make races, get a few golds in B Class events, and earn enough credits to buy a '91 Acura NSX. Awesome fun...cars and the London circuit look amazing. Did not get to play it online or use the Driving Force Pro...still had no problems driving with my typical dual analog stick configuration.

I started with the Integra Type R...and I recommend starting with it. Not only will you easily beat many of the early races, it is still competitive through many of the B Class events.

the picture mode is pretty amazing.

There is no photo mode in Prologue. The images I've posted are official screenshots from the developer.

The photos LastExile posted are actual digital photos he snapped off of the screen with a camera.... in this case, from the menu sequence (the menu icons hide if you don't touch anything for awhile). The car you have selected from your garage appears in these locations...it is very slick.

I can see you don't like the triggers but IMHO I think the setup that the PS controllers uses is horrible for racing games. Just out of my experience the triggers allow for way more accurate pressure control of the gas and brakes and all for use of both brakes and gas if you want to. With the analog stick I don't see how you can do that you are either braking or accelerating but never both. (Yes it doesn't seem very realistic who accelerates and brakes at the same time??? but hey sometimes things like that are used to do little adjustments and stuff that normally can't be done in real life) Another thing to note is that using the analog stick also has too much free movement its not just down and up it has a huge amount of movement in 2 axises which I find annoying as well. You could think your giving it full gas but in reality your only 3/4 of the way up due to its 2 axises of motion (stick is pointing to the top right instead of straight up). Also the L1, L2, R1, R2 buttons on the PS controller have a weird unbalanced feel to them... it's hard to explain. It's like the force you need to apply vary, based on how deep you push it....it just weird is all and it makes shifting harder. I at times accidentally shift twice and or don't shift at all because of it. It could also be that I grew up playing mainly the Sega Dreamcast controller so I'm just more used to the triggers in general but that is my opinion based on the uses of the Dreamcast/xbox style controllers vs the PS1/2/3 style controllers for racing games.

Dang I hope this game is released sometime this year.

Yea what ever happened to Oct 2007? I guess someone forgot its JAN 08! I would like to at least be able to play the newest demo "Prologue" but I'm not in Japan.....

Anyone have a proxy I can use in Japan so I can download this onto my PS3?

Another thing to note is that using the analog stick also has too much free movement its not just down and up it has a huge amount of movement in 2 axises which I find annoying as well.

Actually, I take advantage of that range of motion...for example, I "steer" with the left stick because I find I have more finesse when I push the stick against the edge and roll it around. I sometimes use this on the right stick when I need to feather the control more, rolling the stick from the right up to the top rather than straight from the middle to the top. I guess the dual stick driving configuration isn't for everyone, but, for me, it is vastly superior to the triggers. Ideally, both configurations should be available in the controller options.

I at times accidentally shift twice and or don't shift at all because of it.

I've never shifted twice or missed a shift...interesting.

It could also be that I grew up playing mainly the Sega Dreamcast controller

IMHO, Dreamcast had one of the worst controllers ever. I'd bet that if Dreamcast had a better controller, it would have done better...it definitely had some quality games.

Can't you use a Logitech G25 wheel with the PS3?

Yup. As I mentioned in an earlier post, GT5: Prologue fully supports Logitech's G25, Driving Force Pro (what I have), and the original GT Force!

Yea what ever happened to Oct 2007? I guess someone forgot its JAN 08! I would like to at least be able to play the newest demo "Prologue" but I'm not in Japan.....

In Japan, it is Christmas 2007 for GT5: Prologue, Christmas 2008 for GT5. I haven't heard an official date for U.S., but supposedly Prologue is listed as Spring 2008. No word on the demo of Prologue for the U.S. either.

I'm going to find a way around this and get the latest prologue on my ps3 :)

Good luck with that. Wish me luck too...I'm trying to get my coworkers to loan me Prologue over the weekend so I can play it at home with my wheel!

heh if I had the means I just fly to JP and take my PS3 with me... then install it there ;) haha man why do they have to torture us? The PS3 has been out for how long?

So your friend has a ps3 with Prologue on it?

I was able to get it to install with the above method!!!!! OMG OMG OMG!!

Dude this game is sick! But It only has 4 playable cars. The GTR, EvoX, BMW 135i and CFX1? (Slow) the fastest car is by far the Evo X (in the game at least) and the graphics just look superb.

4 cars is what I should be seeing right? Theres a Lexus IS-F Im dying to drive!!!! And the NSX looks absolutely real...

Sounds like you got the free demo, not the released product. The demo should also have the IS-F and WRX STi playable...not sure why you don't see them. The Suzuka Circuit is the only playable track in the demo as well.

And you haven't seen anything yet. I borrowed the game over the weekend and the London track is gorgeous. I've been trying to earn enough to buy the Audi R8 to complete the B Class Race Events...I'm just over 13,000,000 credits (need over 16). I tried the game both with the standard dual analog controller and with the Driving Force Pro. I recorded replays of equally smooth driving with both controls...GT does a great job with both, but the Driving Force Pro is still the best way to go.

For those of you thinking about importing the Japanese release of Prologue specifically for online play, you may want to hold off. It took me a ton of attempts spanning the entire weekend to stay connected long enough just to download the patch that enables online play. Every attempt produced an error...written entirely in Japanese so I had no idea what was the reason for my failed attempts. I finally managed to successfully complete the download Sunday afternoon around 5pm...but I gave up on connecting to any multiplayer racing events after failing to do so for the next hour.

Today, I installed the game on my dev station at work. It had no problem downloading the patch. I was also able to connect to actual online racing events, but races are only open to specific cars on specific tracks with specific conditions that you cannot edit.

I focused on the London circuit, which allows maximum of 8 players. My first few races were between 2 and 4 players...and were relatively lag free. One opponent was in a Nissan Skyline GT-R V.spec II Nur '02 that seems faster than my Acura NSX '91...but, what was more annoying, is that any time I started in front of him, he would bump me on the third or fourth corner, causing me to spin out and fall too far behind. What's strange is that the game does penalize you for doing so (speed limited for a period of like 5 seconds...during which your car is ghosted so that you don't become an obstacle for other cars), but my opponent didn't seem to be incurring a very long penalty. I never beat him, but did come close once (he pushed me out of the way on the inside of the final turn). Later in the day, I finally got a 7 player and 5 player race going, but both games were plagued by horrible lag (my car and environment played as smoothly as single player, but my opponents jittered wildly and the simulation of their cars made it seem like they were skidding - they even kicked up particle smoke and generated screeching sounds).

BTW, the '91 NSX feels especially slow in the London circuit...and acceleration in second gear seems unexpectedly slow. I wish they had the six speed configuration...I'd bet that the gear ratios of the six speed are better suited for a tight course like this...almost every other car in this event seemed a lot faster than me in the corners and I wouldn't have thought many of them would be. This is the list of cars eligble for participation in online events versus the NSX:

- Acura NSX '91
- BMW 135i Coupe '07
- Lotus Elise 111R '04
- Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX GSR '05
- Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X GSR P.P. '07
- Nissan Fairlady Z Version S '07
- Nissan Skyline Coupe 370GP Type SP '07
- Nissan Skyline Coupe Concept '07
- Nissan Skyline GT-R V.spec II Nur '02
- Nissan Skyline Sedan 350GT Type SP '06
- Renault Clio Renault Sport V6 24V '00
- Subaru Impreza WRX STI '07

Lag totally killed a 5 player race I did on the oval at Daytona (which is open to as many as 16 players). Victory here relies upon drafting. I strangely incurred penalties and would lose control of my car for no apparent reason. The jittery nature of some of the opponent cars meant if I got too close to one, I could get bumped by them with far more force than should be possible given our relative speeds and trajectory.

I'm not necessarily saying the online play is messed up...just that it isn't necessarily going to be a great experience until more local servers are online. And, since this release is only in Japan, I don't suspect we'll see that until the Prologue officially comes here.

Did I mention it is a total trip to see the interior of an Acura NSX in the game? It even has the embossed Acura lettering on the steering wheel and the Bose label on the tape deck.

PS3 ProxyServer Installer (ENGLISH) (1.37 MB) as found here? seems MIA. You need an account to download it, and the website says they are temporarily not accepting new accounts. Another one is here.

I got my Japanese PS3 account up and running, but can't find the prologue demo. I can only find the for purchase version, which I can't do without a Japanese address or language skills.

Enkrypt3d (or anyone else) how did you make it work and get the demo?

Hey guys yea this is of course not the full game its only the Prologue. The only cars I can play are the Nissan GTR, The Lexus IS-F Is locked I dont know why... I've tried beating the track several times and it doesnt seem to matter. I see one car with a blue cover over it (mystery car? This might be the STI) Evo X is by far the fastest best handling best braking car out of the few cars there in this version... I usually finish both laps in under 5 minutes which is pretty good... it looks absolutely fantastic on my 46" LCD screen!

If you guys want I can post the proxy server and mirror the how-to here so that you can load the Prologue if you are not in Japan - of course its all in Japanese! :)

Again, don't confuse the "GT5: Prologue demo" with the release version of GT5: Prologue, which is still technically a demo for Gran Turismo 5 but costs over $40 (for the Blu-ray version). There are no locked cars in the release version...you just need to earn enough credits to buy them from the dealership.

I had to give the copy I borrowed back...before I had earned enough to buy the R8. Oh well. Crossing fingers I'll be able to borrow it again soon.

Where did your friend get this game then? Is it possible for him to get more copies? I'm very willing to pay for it... I dont mind that its in japanese!

What I downloaded was obviously the demo thats only available in Japan... but of course with a bunch of work-arounds applied to get it to work on my US PS3 :)

I dont understand why this game is not available in the states!

Hey, I'm glad I'm not the only GT junkie on this site! You can actually order the Japanese GT5 Prologue game off of www.playasia.com . It'll work and all cause of the ps3 being region free too. Or you can create a Japanese account and buy the downloadable version but you'll need a international credit card to do so.

Polyphony released a statement earlier last year saying that GT5P will be released in the US but not till Febuary or March. Gamestop has it saying march but IGN.com has it saying February so I don't know who to believe. I can't find the actual statement from polyphony but I'll look again and post it up.

Where did your friend get this game then?

Came directly as a gift from Polyphony Digital. Our studios are both wholly owned subsidiaries of Sony.

Is it possible for him to get more copies? I'm very willing to pay for it... I dont mind that its in japanese!

If it were possible, don't you think I would already have a copy? If you're willing to pay for it, there are plenty of imports available on eBay too. I just can't stomach the thought of paying the price of a full game for a larger demo...even when it is as cool as GT5: Prologue. That said, if the online component suddenly started working better from the U.S., I'd consider it.

I used to have a contact at one of Sony's Japanese studios who would get me games, but he is no longer with Sony. Before GT4 came out, he sent me Japanese copies of GT4: Prologue and GT4.

I dont understand why this game is not available in the states!

Nor do I....nor do I. I love the fact that the latest PS3 ads also feature clips of Prologue. Total tease!

Hey, I'm glad I'm not the only GT junkie on this site!

Me too!

Good point lol im considering buying it though... im getting tired of running Suzuka! ok ok thats a lie but i want more cars to drive ugh

also how do I setup a Japanese PSN account????

also how do I setup a Japanese PSN account????

Akira3d has a post in this thread with a good link on how to do that. I don't speak Japanese, so most of my info is bogus/garble. So I can get demos/videos but not buy anything.

Any info you have on how to get the Demo would be much appreciated if you think I can follow it without Japanese language comprehension. I too am a GT junkie and I am getting sick of the alpine course. For some reason I seem addicted to the Lotus and my (lack of) talent is topping out. Suzuka would be just the ticket to get me though to the US prologue release.

Ok for starters download and install this proxy app:

www.enkrypted.com/mp3/PS3_ProxyServer_Installer-ENGLISH.rar

(you must have .NET 1.1 installed nothing newer!)

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...E3-F589-4842-8157-034D1E7CF3A3&displaylang=en

Best way to know for sure is download this and install it before you install and run the proxy app.

Next is you want to be sure your PC has a static IP address.

To do this go to Start > control panel > network connections > right click on "Local Area Connection" and click properties. Double click on TCP/IP Settings and choose an IP address (IE: 192.168.1.60 works)

But the IP address will depend on what type of Router you're using to get online...... if its a linksys, then use 192.168.1.X if its a Dlink or netgear it might be 192.168.0.X etc to be sure, just double click the local area connection item in network connections and click the "Support" tab to see your current IP. Then choose something within that range..

http://zeus.dl.playstation.net/cdn/...GYBvTyuiixLV5jp6i.pkg?product=0084&country=jp

Now download this to your hard disk. This is the actual game. Do not change the file name and save it in a folder called GT5 (or somewhere that you can remember)...

Now after you have the .NET 1.1 installed and the proxy app installed, run it!

-A.)First, make sure the app is running in PS3 Mode (usually by default), by clicking the appropriate radio button.

-B.) You will now need to enter your computers local IP address into the designated text box. This will be the static IP address we just setup earlier. You will know if its the wrong IP because the app will give you an error along the lines of "Unhandled Exception" when the start button is clicked

-C.) Most likely you will just need to leave the port (or prot as may be the case) field as 8080, unless you have specific settings blocking that port.

-D.) Now change over to the replace files tab. You will be presented with a white box and an add button. Click to add a new divert link. A small text box split half way down the middle will appear. The first half is for the source link that you want to divert, (in this case the F@H link) and the second half is the file the link should divert to (the game, demo, etc you want to install). So you will need to add one of the following links to the left box by copy-pasting(depending on your region PAL, NTSC, ASIA) These are the only links I am aware of, country codes dont apply here.

-E.) Now you need to add the .pkg file you have downloaded from the list to the second box, as currnetly the F@H link is pointing to nothing. So click the ... button and find wherever the file that you want to link was saved.

-F.) Thats it! Now just go back to the main tab and click the big start button. Once its text changes to stop, the link is now being diverted.

-G.) Next up you will need to change the connection settings on your PS3. So go down to connection setings in the settings column. Select custom settings when prompted, and leave everything default except for "Use a Proxy Connection"; enable this. add to it the same IP and Port that you entered in the Proxyserver.

-H.) Your finished! Now go to the Folding@Home icon and click download. This will only work if Folding@home IS NOT installed. If its installed, you must remove it for this to work!.

If the download shows that it is around 55Mb, something has gone wrong as this is the actual F@H size. Most likely you have not enabled the proxy on the PS3 or entered a wrong IP somewhere as everything else would have yielded error messages.) Otherwise, enjoy not having to leave you PS3 on for hours at a time while demos download!

Let me know if you have any problems! This will only work for demos and not full games if you have the latest firmware on your PS3..... if you have firmware version 1.60 this method works for loading *Some* full games! (i'm still working on the firmware check bypass to see if I can load some of these full games.....

Download this one called "The Club" I think its a full game?

http://zeus.dl.playstation.net/cdn/...VGsM6h347SpmQud33.pkg?product=0084&country=eu

1.7GB though but badass!

wow i haven't checked this thread in a while and didn't expect all the replies lol. For you guys in the US you can get GT5 Prolgue from http://www.japanvideogames.com they're a local shop here in socal that imports the games. I've also seen prologue on ebay for sale.

The only way to play GT5 is with the G25 logitech wheel, you definately need that delicate throttle and brake control. As for downloading the patch to race online, I found it very easy and simple, got it on the first day of release so im not sure where some of you are having problems. I believe they're also supposed to release more patches and content for GT5 prologue as the year progresses until GT5 comes out. Also, all the money you earn and career transfers over to GT5 when its out.

Another thing im not sure if you guys know about is the integration of GT5 with PS HOME. PS HOME is a virtual community for online playstation users, quick example for those who have no idea is second life but for ps3. Each person has a virtual home i.e. aparment, penthouse, mansion, etc.. where you and your friends can gather. You have custom furniture and even tv's. On those tv's you can display your own content uploaded to your ps3 from your pc. Then directly from your home you and your friends can go to your garage to see your cars and even straight into a GT5 race. There's a lot more integration that they plan on doing but thats all I remember off top of my head.

Some videos that explain PS Home better:

here's a GT:HD drift video from weekly ranking:

screenshot from GT5 TV mode which is available in gt5 prologue. Already about 8 videos are available, all i believe are in 1080p.

Me too!

Akira3d, have you seen any Anti-Aliasing issues on GT5? Don't get me wrong, the game looks great, but when the cars move further away they start to look like crap.. This is only when I sit closer than 15' from the TV... I have a Samsung 46" LCD 1920x1080p and everything looks stunning if you sit at a distance... I was just curious if they have improved the AA in the version you've played?

Akira3d, have you seen any Anti-Aliasing issues on GT5?

I don't really notice aliasing much when I'm driving about five feet away from my 40" screen (which is about how far I sit when using the wheel), but if I'm standing less than three feet from the screen, I still see some aliasing (of course, I shouldn't stand this close...but somehow end up being that close after playing for a few hours).

I think 1080p games on PS3 will never have more than 2x anti-aliasing due to limitations of its graphics hardware. 2x is better than nothing, but certainly will not eliminate aliasing issues on thin high-contrast details (i.e. panel lines).

Regardless, the higher resolution, progressive rendering, and 2x anti-aliasing are a marked improvement over PS2...which tended to shimmer like crazy.
