F1 2008 Megathread

Re: Whoa Nelly, what next?????

McLaren can't seem to get a handle on a setup that's easy on tires the way Ferrari apparently has. Hamilton had to do 3 stops because they abuse the tires so badly and he remarked that Bridgestone warned them about tire wear. And with that pit lane length, that's a pretty desparate strategy they obviously would have liked to avoid. :frown:

But hey, what a see-saw season. Hamo wins the first one, then it seems to be all Kimi, then Flippy comes on strong. And Kubica continues to lurk back in 4th the whole time. And Nando seems to come and go like the wind. And how about that side by side between Kovy and Glock right behind the Button-Piquet dice? And that's just the on-track fun. We've just about forgotten about the Mosley escapade.

Pretty good "edge of your seat" stuff, no?

I think that was the highlight of the race, at least for me. If Timo only had a stronger car... or was he heavier with more fuel?

Re: Traction control on start?

Kimi seemed lazy at the start
Matchett's or whoever's comment about the lack of traction control making the dirty line on start more of a distinct disadvantage rings true with me. Numbers 1, 3, 5 on the clean line easily zipped by both # 2 and 4 on the dirty line.

Random F1 thoughts. With all the happenings at the Honda paddock. Do you folks think JB and RB will be back next season?

With all the wacky things happening in F-1, let alone Honda, one can't be sure if JB and RB will be back next race.

JB's contract is up this year I think, and he was quoted as saying he wanted/expected to be back at Honda next year. Bob V. or one of the pundits said they didn't think that was the best thing to say, implying that they knew he didn't have a firm contract offer from Honda, at least not yet. But IIRC, the next thing he (Bob V) said was that both JB and RB still had the utmost respect and trust in Ross, which means to me that Ross is still highly popular and effective within the team proper (if that means anything, given Honda corporation's history of meddling).

And that's all the ruminating I'm going to do in this post............

I think JB will take a one year deal with an option for a multi-year contract(in broad strokes) or a contract with car performance provisions. If Brawn can't come up with a good car for '09, he's going to bolt. I would.

Good race yesterday and a good showing by McLaren. If Macca can take care of their tire usage woes, the season could be a good one.

I think JB and RB will be back next season. RB is keeping pace with JB in qualifying. Also, Barichello wants to be the first driver with 300 F1 starts, so that means two more seasons. I think they just need to get a better car.

Re: Hey, wake up

Almost a week without some sort of blather, so here it comes.......

Ross astutely points out that Monaco could be a mess. That and the fact that old RB used to drive w/o traction control could just help the boys sneak into the points !!! Might be like a rain race; strategy + luck = who knows what.

Laughed my ass off when I heard that Mad Max wrote a letter to the FIA club members who will soon vote on his sorry ass (no pun intended) saying they (the FIA) were under attack and he was the victim of this overall political subtrofuge and that without him as the steadying forceful hand at the FIA, old Bernie and other forces would cut the FIA's nuts off (or some such innuendo) and somehow that would destroy the sport. Say what you will about old Mad Max being kinda 'out there' but he doesn't lack the cojones, does he? Of course, the sobering fact is that there probably is a few grains of truth in there somewhere. :frown:

Indeed! I'm hoping for a Honda win. Won't get it but I'm hoping JB and RB's rain and no TC accumen will at least get the team deep into the points.

Woot!

Re: Now that's an expose`

Very good article by WIRED:

Inside the Scandal That Rocked the Formula One Racing World:
I've been reading snippets of this informative and entertaining article all morning (dang meetings and phone calls keep interrupting me  ). A must read for everyone here.

as long as Ferrari or McLaren are not on the podium and Honda scores some points , i'll be happy.

Well, the boys are edging closer to some points maybe; 8th and 10th in 2nd practice. Probably means nothing, but, unlike last year, one can at least hope.

Wow RB came in 6th! I didn't watch the race though, I was too beat down from UFC party and went to bed.

Just finished watching the race. Wow, all those mistakes by the frontrunners and some still managed to stay on top. RB in 6th place, woohoo! The Honda boys were doing pretty good, no mistakes on their part. Too bad poor JB had that incident, not his fault though. The guy with the shittiest luck is Adrian Sutil without a doubt, thanks in part to Raikkonen.

I don't know if I posted this before, but if you miss any of the races, practices, or qual sessions, just go to https://www.racing-underground.com/ . Good torrent site for all forms of motor sports. I'm downloading right now a few documentaries on Senna, Schumi, and other videos.

Re: Sato & Ant shoot out for Piquet's seat?

I'm liking rumors about bringing in one of the Super Aguri boys to replace Nelson Jr in the Renault. I've been pretty hard on ole Sato, but it's time to give him another look; I think he might have learned a thing or 2 in the last couple of years.

On a different note, Kimi was busier than a one armed paper hanger trying not to run into Sutil. God, that was funny. Amazing, but still funny.

Re: Sato & Ant shoot out for Piquet's seat?

Jenson Button first Honda customer for the Honda Jet. He bought two for £2m each supposedly. I'm sure he got some kind of "employee" discount. Now that's a baller right there.

And no, he didn't buy two model planes like in the pic ;)

Around here, we call it brown-nosing the company.

Hmmmmmmmm post #1000. Whoda thunk it?

Re: Party !!

Where were you last weekend? My wife said something like "we should go to the Indy 500 sometime". I go "Hmmmm yeah" while really wondering what it would be like trying to watch F-1 at Monaco. And the reality is that my race report from last weekend started out:

Memorial Day Weekend 2008. The biggest racing weekend of the year. What to do? Where to go? Watch or race? Monaco? Indy? Or Willows? Monaco has the Prince, yachts and beautiful people. Indy has the idiot son F. Tony George, corn and the Speedway. Willows has R.J. Gordy, jackrabbits and The Last Stand, the last stand up outdoor bar in North America. What a stupid question, we’re going to Thunderhill at Willows for the SF region’s double race.

Then I come across this thread

I think we should all plan on a cruise to Monaco next year !!! Who's in?

Re: Party !!

I'm in. How about NSXPO '09 or '10 in Monaco. All of us ballers, (we do own NSX's), can fly our cars over the pond for this. ;)

Re: Monday morning pot stirring

Well here we are, waiting for the next race. And since idle minds are the devil's workshop, or however that little diddy goes, I'm liking the speculation that Kimi is getting ready to retire, vacating a seat for Nando to hop on in. I like the way PaddockTalk puts it together; Everyone has denied Nando's got some kind of deal with Ferrari, so...............it must be true. Right? Isn't that how it works in the Wonderland of F-1?

Oh well, the big FIA vote is tomorrow, so we'll be on to bigger and better things very soon. Hmmmmmmm, maybe I should get my "week's worth of work" out of the way before the vote.

I have heard the Kimi retirment thing off and on for the past couple years. Not sure if this will finally be it or not though. Also the Alonso rumors, theres lots, so where he ends up, may as well flip a coin. He's got the marketability for all the teams, so if they have the bugdet, im sure they will try to get him.
