The Official 2011 F1 Thread....Now That 2010 is Over

My prediction:

1. Jenson Button: he knows the racing line the best.
2. Lewis Hamilton: fastest reacting driver in the top ten, but tire degradation will get him in the end.
3. Mark Webber: biggest balls among all the drivers.

Here's to Jenson:

I was mentioning how Rosberg was lucky now to hit the barrier head on, then Checo crashed at the same place, but not as lucky. I was really worried when it took a while for Sergio to get taken out of the car, specially when the track crew covered the accident scene. Scary moments indeed. I was hoping for him to bring home more points and finish strongly in the top 10.

Here's to a Jenson Button win!

Amazing race for what is normally a very boring procession-like event. Jenson's drive was excellent. So bummed for him and the horrible timing of the Petrov wreck. If the wreck never occured, I honestly think both Vettel and Alonso's tires would have gone off the edge and Button could have finished first. Even though Jenson applauded McLaren's strategy today, they could have put him on the soft compound during his second pit and with passing being almost impossible @ Monaco, I think he could have held off Vettel & Alonso for the rest of the race. Hell, even with Alonso breathing down Seb's neck, he still couldnt pass him in the 10 laps prior to the wreck which could have played into McLaren/Jenson's hand if they had gone with the 2 stop strategy.

Martin Whitmarsh, Team principal, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes:

"We selected a three-stop strategy for Jenson – and, had the race not been red-flagged just as Jenson had caught Sebastian and Fernando, I think that that selection would have been revealed as the right one. Now, of course, we'll never know – but it's undeniable that Sebastian and Fernando were both on very worn tyres at the end, whereas Jenson's were pretty fresh by comparison, so we definitely fancied his chances of being able to press home that advantage by overtaking the Ferrari and the Red Bull in the final laps. But, as I say, the red flag scuppered those chances.

"Having said that, Jenson drove not only faultlessly but also very, very fast here this afternoon. Indeed, he posted the team's 10,000th lap in the lead of a grand prix today, a stunning statistic. On his charge, he caught the Sebastian-Fernando battle by almost two seconds per lap whilst still managing to conserve his tyres. It was a truly excellent performance.

Re: Turning up the heat on Red Bull

So, did you hear there's a meeting planned for Montreal to discuss some rules and technical changes to the car? Presumably to slow RB down? Haven't caught WindTunnel, James or Joe's blog yet, so it will be interesting to hear their speculation. Personally I think they should make up some anti-Seb rules. I mean, let's not pussy-foot around; just cut right to the chase.

Stay tuned for my suggestions for new rules.

I think the main bone of contention is everybody's blown diffuser are to be banned [or at least the hot blown, as opposed to the cold blown diffuser]. As for Vettel, I think if Red Bull would think more about helping Webber winning a race rather than mucking up his run it would help. Webber has posted the fastest lap in 4 of the five GPs so far this year, but is way off the pace in qualifying [except for Spain]? We never/rarely see an in-car shot showing Webber's KERS usage, I wonder why?

In yesterday's first stint Webber lost 9 seconds to Alonso just before the pit stops. Did his tyres go away so badly?? Did he make a mistake?? Or was it a strategy request from his team??? Then after the bungled pit stop when he was as low as 14th he put in a storming drive, including that last lap pass on Kobayashi to drag himself up to 4th place, including that fastest lap.

What a pity the red flag blew Buttons chance of winning  Vettel's luck is sure making up for all of the bad luck he had last year while leading numerous races.

With 2 bigger than usual accidents at Monaco, maybe they will look at safety.

The race was interesting. Would have liked to see the race w/out the red flag and see what Alonso and Button would have done. Ironic that both F1 and NASCAR had cautions late in the race that (probably) altered the outcome, and Indycar had a great finish w/out any manufacturing.

What a shame red flag ruined end of race.It would be very interesting to watch battle for 1.place.Both drivers Fernando and Janson had nothing to loose they was prepared for overtaking Seb(or to try overtake).Looks like we have new old world champion already.

Re: Gimmicks that Bernie would like

Stay tuned for my suggestions for new rules.

Here's my first new gimmick suggestion. (With apologies to Steve Matchett)

Let the fans vote; just like Dancing with the Stars, fans get to vote for their favorite driver during the race. And the favorite driver will have 30 seconds knocked off his race finishing time, the 2nd favorite driver will have 15 seconds taken off and the 3rd will have 10 seconds taken off. So, how they cross the finish line may not be who’s on the podium.

Waddya think? should I send it off to Bernie on behalf of Prime? It's all about the entertainment, right?

Which hotels are best for the Austin race? I don't know that area at all.

The track is in SE Austin by the airport, but I imagine those will be a tough room. Downtown has some very nice places, and is close to 6th St which is where the college kids party.

I've got family in Austin so I'm set, and there is a very good NSX group in Austin and San Antonio (which is ~75 miles away). Perhaps a big NSX weekend party. KO-NSX has a nice place and I'm sure his new wife will be welcome to the idea of having overnight guests!

I know, I know, you'll probably dismiss this totally out of hand because I've been so skeptical of them meeting the deadline, but.............even if the track is done and the race happens, I'm absolutely positive the needed roadway improvements will not be done to anyone's satisfaction. The traffic jam in and out of there will be, well..........not fun.

Assuming it does happen, I'll rent a motorhome or bring mine, come early (or stay over Saturday nite) and be the last to leave Sunday nite. Lots of waiting; do it in comfort.

Re: Well my friend............

that would work coming in the night before, but not leaving after the race.

I can bring my tent and sleep inside on a cot.

Some curmudgeons were talking about how hot it is in June and they should move the race back to fall due to the numerous cases of heat stroke and other spectator problems that will no doubt occur. And, coincidentally, moving it to fall would give them more time to finish the track.

Anyway, I'm planning on holing up in a motorhome after the race with the A/C on and the fridge well stocked. Probably have to stay all night and leave Monday morning.

Leaving tonight for the Canadian grand prix!!! Got my camera ready and a nice rain coat , because Im going to need it!!!
Going to meet Will buxton for drinks and F1 Chat saturday nite with a bunch of F1 heads, who's coming?
