The Official 2010 F1 Megathread

Good to see Button up there, as fast as, or faster than HamLOLton/Hambone/McCheats/McLiar/etc.. ;)

Re: JB's advantage

Good to see Button up there
Yes, it will be interesting to see if he can capitalize on his talent for being easy on tires. After hearing the comments this morning, it appears tire wear will be a huge factor, particularly in the early races. I would not be surprised to see some drivers having to make 4 pit stops on Sunday.

Lots of variables.

I appreciate your enthusiasm, but I logged on to see what everyone thinks about the new season, long before I had a chance to get home and watch the practice session, not te see all the results.

Button doesn't have what it takes to go head to head with Hamilton and come out the winner. The 2007 season was a good e.g. of Hamilton's speed. This season belongs to Ferrari or Red Bull. Now, HRT please give Senna a good car. Sauber should do the same for Kobayashi. Ahh well, one can hope. Sorry Vettel, but that's racing.

This thread is titled the F1 Mega-thread, correct? Where else would you have me post practice times? If an all-inclusive thread has been created for the topic than I would have some self-restraint over checking the thread before you catch yourself up.

Re: Do they publish post-race weights?

We've traditionally wondered how much fuel each of the top 10 were starting with. Now it's time to wonder about how much fuel each car is finishing with. Nobody ran out this race, but how close did they cut it?

Pretty good start for the season. I was hoping JB would pass MS!

I still don't understand what those lower tier teams are doing in F1? IMHO these are GP2 teams that don't belong in the F1. 7-8 seconds difference in qualifying times is crazy. Hopefully they will improve during the year.

BTW, It was AWESOME to see a Senna in the race. The resemblance with the helmet on was uncanny.

Meh, I'm underwhelmed so far. Maybe it was just the track but, sheesh, this was a boring race. I actually fell asleep. Or maybe I'm just getting old (shut up Tedroe). ;)

Re: Rules not working........so far

Yeah, race was boring, no argument here. Goofy new rules didn't work. For example, no one ran out of gas and the backmarker gambit was a loser. Lotus actually was showing reasonable pace for existing less than a year and those other new guys.........broke down before they could play out their intended roles as moving chicanes.

Yeah, it's quite telling when Fred is driving around, thinking, analyzing and plotting instead of racing full out.

The need, of course, is to bring in more reasonable strategy alternatives (that teams will embrace) and James thinks tire choices being closer not farther apart is one answer. Not sure about that because, just like inventing games for "Minute to Win it," no one can predict what will actually "work."

What are they gonna do now? Bring in the mandatory 2nd pit stop? Weak. :frown: I say ask Bill Maher for some "NEW RULES."

On the bright side, watch out for Force India, which is looking pretty racy. Maybe Sutil knew a thing or two when he didn't take other offers.

Definitely a boring race. Too bad for Vettel, it was his race till lap 33. I still don't have a team or driver to root for this year. Caterpillars and Phil sure were looking good in the Ferraris.

Just root for Ferrari. It made the race more exciting.

The cars looked a bit lumbersome at the start; and by the middle of the race they were spread out enough that it was a less than interesting race. I was surprised that nobody tried a 2 (or 3) stop strategy. I think it will take another race or 2 for some of the more creative strategies to be demonstrated.

The beauty of F-1 is that it isn't NASCAR, and sometimes a chess match is a bit dull.

Re: Hmmmmmmmmmmm, what to do?

some random thoughts after such a disappointing start to what was touted to be the most anticipated season in years. I mean you know it's bad when 2 of the top 4 cars are not mechanically sound for several laps at the end and still hang onto their positions.

Refuelling. A lot of skepticism out there about F-1 being able to pull themselves out of the funk, now primarily blamed on the re-fuelling ban. Webber summed that up well just today.

Old Tech: There is some logic to the argument that excitement (on track overtaking) comes primarily from driver mistakes; the cars are too sophisticated and don't allow many mistakes to be made. The argument is for simpler tech; like manual gear boxes, less aero, harder tires and less efficient brakes. James Allen's post today mentioned some of that.

New tech. There is less logic to the argument that excitement comes from perfect engineering and more sophistication; active suspension, active aero, seamless shifting, zero mechanicals. Matchett, in his "Mechanic's Tale" book, showed his engineering bias saying he yearned for the early 90's when engineers were on the verge of taking the driver out of the equation all together. That would be like computer chess? With that being said, chess is good, just not sexy: too few of us appreciate that aspect.

It's a dilemma, no doubt. What do you think they will do right away for this season and where will they be going in future years?

You are finally coming full circle Tedroe ........ racing is not racing unless there is passing and the driver is the biggest variable. Didn't even bother watching the race; the qualifying runs are more fun for me.

watched last night ...kinda boring...but to see MS do well after 3 yrs off is amazing for a 41 yo.I think the whole loss of fuel strategy makes for less excitement, but then again this whole f1 thing is more about the cars/tech than about the driver.I would be interrested in bringing the series back to a simpler more driver involved spec.

I wish they'd return to single lap qualifying and just get rid of the gimmicks. Bring back rock hard tires and manual gearboxes. Bring back engine competition and let the best driver and car win.

I watched the Indy 300 in Sao Paolo and it was exponentially better than this last F1 race. Maybe it was b/c Sato punted someone on the first corner...again. ;)

Re: Now, wait just a minute.............

........Didn't even bother watching the race; the qualifying runs are more fun for me.

Well Hrant, if you want passing and re-passing, missed shifts, gear box failures, hard tires, and youth/skill vs. old age/treachery, you can read my latest race report on the FM forum.

You are finally coming full circle Tedroe ........ racing is not racing unless there is passing and the driver is the biggest variable

Now wait just a damn minute. You know me, I can play the hand I'm dealt, so if necessary, I will follow the race like a good chess match because Hobbs and Matchett are speculating on the strategy. I mean, if they commented on the Rose Parade, I'd probably watch that too. But, having said that, the 08-09 seasons were pretty damn good, so I was not thrilled about rule changes.

Speaking of chess, let's get together for a game since we don't have ugly gossip to share anymore.

I found another Torrent source that archived the full F1 weekend from BBC and ITV. I don't mind watching the race one week afterwards. The qualy and race took up 2.3GB. Quality is excellent. It's 50 fps, as one would expect, but plays back just fine via a 720/60p hdmi feed to my telly from my computer.

MS did a tribute on his Facebook page. Yes, you can add him as your friend.

Ayrton Senna:

Ayrton Senna da Silva, São Paulo, March 21, 1960,
was a Brazilian racing driver and three-time Formula One world champion.

He was killed in a crash while leading the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, and remains the most recent Grand Prix driver to die at the wheel of a Formula One car.

Senna began his motorsport career in karting and moved up the ranks to win the British Formula 3 championship in 1983.

Making his Formula One debut with Toleman in 1984, he moved to Lotus-Renault the following year, and won six Grands Prix over the next three seasons.

In 1988 he joined Frenchman Alain Prost at McLaren-Honda. Between them, Senna and Prost won fifteen out of the sixteen Grands Prix which took place that season, with Ayrton Senna winning his first World Championship, a title he would go on to win again in 1990 and 1991.

McLaren's performance declined in 1992, as the Williams-Renault combination began to dominate the sport, although Senna won five races to finish as runner-up in 1993.

He moved to Williams in 1994, but suffered a fatal accident at the third race of the season at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Italy.

Ayrton Senna is regarded as one of the greatest drivers in the history of Formula One.

In 2009, a poll of 217 current and former Formula One drivers chose Senna as their greatest Formula One driver,in a survey conducted by British magazine Autosport.

He was recognised for his qualifying speed over one lap and from 1989 until 2006 held the record for most pole positions.

He was among the most talented drivers in extremely rain affected conditions, as shown by his performances in the 1984 Monaco Grand Prix, the 1985 Portuguese Grand Prix, and the 1993 European Grand Prix.

He also holds the record for most victories at the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix (6) and is the third most successful driver of all time in terms of race wins.

However,Ayrton Senna courted controversy throughout his career, particularly during his turbulent rivalry with Alain Prost, which was marked by two championship-deciding collisions at the 1989 and 1990 Japanese Grands Prix.

At the risk of jinxing them, I'll say FI is definitely the best of the rest at this point. Anyone want a friendly bet on that? I'll take Sutil, you take anyone else except the obvious top 8. Winner buys lunch..........well, lets say loser pays $20 toward lunch.

Anyone?
