The Official 2010 F1 Megathread

F1 broadcasts by Fox > F1 broadcasts by CBS > not having F1 broadcast.

I actually like the Speed channel broadcasts and the mix of personalities they bring in. And since Speed is owned by Fox, the same guys will be announcing the race.

Same guys commentating, but it's all the overlayed commercial crap I hate from Fox broadcasts.

Re: What's the truth on this?

Anyone wanna place bets to see if Webber stays with RBR next season?
Not me.

I suspect that his pride will put him in a very difficult situation. There was talk of replacing Flippy, but the Red Cars upped the ante on Mark and everybody by "extending" Flippy's contract. Unless Mikey uncharacteristically gives up and goes home, what other decent seat would be open? So, the question is, can he suck it up like old guys in a bad economy (perceived to be over the hill) and try to survive at RBR? ....

Webber just signed an RBR contract for next year. http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/2010/06/webber-gets-a-new-deal-for-a-fifth-season-with-red-bull/

What does this mean..........really?
1) Jack and I were dead wrong and everything is hunky-dory with Vettel and the team??? or
2) this is RBR damage control and they bought him off with a big bonus? or
3) Mark groveled like an old guy about to be put out to pasture? or
4) all of the above?

Help me out here guys, which is it?

I say none. :) Here is what I think it means:

1. Mark is a proven winning driver with the podiums to back it up;
2. Mark is familiar with the RBR team dynamic, development cycle and car; and
3. Mark is a veteran who is less likely to make reckless decisions like the "kid".

Under these circumstances, it makes sense to keep him on. He's got at least one or two good seasons left in him. He is a known quantity who can win races. It doesn't make sense to replace him with a Kubica, for example, who while young and talented, is not a proven winner. If I were Christian Horner, I would not replace a demonstrated winner with someone else who merely has "potential" to do better.

As for the incident, I think the media has blown it up more than it deserves. I'm sure emotions were running high, but these guys are professionals and at the end of the day the team comes first. Seb tried to make a pass, thought he had more room than he did, and contacted his teammate's car in a stupid move to push by. I think it is wrong to say that Mark should have moved over- he was not some backmarker Virgin car, he was the race leader! In my mind, it was 100% Vettel's error. It was his responsibility to complete the pass or, if he could not, to fall back and try again. He did neither. Instead, he stayed put and tried to muscle his teammate to the side, like it was NASCAR or bumpercars or something. It was a reckless, dangerous move and they are lucky nobody got hurt. I know Vettel is the brilliant wunderkind and all that, but he needs to learn the difference between aggressive racing and reckless racing. I'm sure he got a talking to by both Horner and Mark.

That difference was nicely demonstrated later in the race by JB and Hamo. JB took several aggressive stabs at his teammate, completed his passes when he could and fell back when he couldn't. He ended up second, but both McLarens crossed the line. It was aggressive, clean racing and both drivers should be commended.

Sadly, I was very wrong.

Looking forward to the race weekend.

Prediction for Canadian GP:
Jenson Button takes pole and wins the race!

Re: Happily, not sadly

I maybe wrong too.

Honcho, I appreciate your take on this and hope that all parties are taking the high road now that emotions have cooled off. So, while I don't think that things are exactly hunky-dory, they appear to be closer to that than the other possibilities, although we may not really know til Webber is done at RBR.

As for the contrast with Button and Hamo, they almost screwed the pooch as well as they also suffered from lack of coordinated communication from the team (and more specifically their own engineers). So they were simply lucky when the resulting coming together turned out to be minor.

But at the end of the day, this whole RBR debacle came from Helmut and Horner's bungling of the PR, not from the media making something out of nothing. As lame as it is, at least Whitmarsh got his team defense into the realm of acceptable BS.

My $0.02.

Yeah, looking forward to turn 1 on the start in Montreal. We'll see who's behaving professionally.

Jenson Button fastest in Practice 1 with Schumacher splitting the McLarens.

Re: Condolences

to Shawn with Mikey in 13th
to Rebel with Button a half second adrift of Hamo
to Webber & RBR for missing pole
to Hamo for his $10k fine and starting on options

JK. These Q results mean next to nothing because
1) this is Montreal which is safety car driver heaven
2) the cocked hat of rain potential
3) leading to gambles on fuel loads
4) tire selection chaos and prolly an extra pit stop
5) brakes could be key if it all stays dry and green

Could be interesting...................

It's all good, see below. ;) He's still not being eaten alive by Hamilton.

Button FTW! ;)

I concur

Well, that wasn't the greatest Schuey race but, my oh my, was that an enjoyable race. Hami, Button, and Caterpillars drove great races.

Awesome!

great race, Canadian GP never disappoints. Congrats to Hamilton, Button, and McLaren. Only wish Button would have won. Had he qual'd better, I'm sure he would have been on top podium. He was reeling in Hamilton at the end, but not enough laps left.

Great performance by Alonso, both Force India drivers schooling Schumacher! LOL.

Vettel trying to pull another stunt before told not to. another LOL moment.

Re: A lot of action

without rain or 2-3 safety cars. Oh and no marmots either !!!

Congrats to Macca. They raced smart and didn't beat themselves. Butt made a great pass on Fred. Did his legendary tire management help?

Shawn; that was tough for you, I know. One that Mikey has already forgotten, I'm sure. Well, next year will be different.

Geez, some guys did 4 stops for tires??? I would've thought Bridgestone would've brought some harder tires.

Yes it did, did you see the tires on some of the other cars?

Great race, hate to see Kobayashi go out early.

MS is hurting his legacy with Mercedes GP calling it quits on 2010 development.

If there were only 5 more laps, Button would have caught Hamilton and destroyed his confidence.

Ferrari to adopt Red Bull-style exhaust system

http://en.espnf1.com/ferrari/motorsport/story/20463.html

A feature of Ferrari's heavily-upgraded F10 car in Valencia next weekend will reportedly be Red Bull-style exhausts.

Rival teams initially thought an illegal ride-height control system was the secret of the RB6's speed, but it is now believed that the layout of the rear of the car - including low-mounted exhausts and pull-rod suspension - is the basis of its success. Spain's AS newspaper reports that the updated F10 will be between three and four tenths per lap quicker than the basic specification raced in Turkey and Canada. The report also said the change represents a fundamentally new aerodynamic direction for the car, opening up a new avenue for subsequent development.

"The most important improvement in Valencia is not what we achieve there, but the way it opens up developments to be stronger for the remainder of the season," Fernando Alonso confirmed.
As well as the lower exhausts, updates will feature modified rear suspension as the team shifts its focus away from the tricky and time consuming F-duct.

"For sure there is a need for a more aggressive push," said Domenicali. "It was clear that we had concentrated too much effort on this blown rear wing [F-duct] - we spent a lot of effort there, being not focused on the other areas of the car. From Valencia onwards the focus will be to develop other areas of the car apart from this blown rear wing, because it is a complicated system that took a lot of resources out of our team."

He added: "Looking at the championship, it is very, very open. I did a calculation that if we had won the race [in Canada] we would be leading the championship with Fernando. It means that everything is really very, very open and that is the motivation that we should have inside to make sure that we push race-by-race. Canada gave a picture that was totally different from the picture we had two weeks ago."

Wonder if McLaren will adopt this as well?

Re: Mikey's legacy

MS is hurting his legacy with Mercedes GP calling it quits on 2010 development.
Well, maybe not, because if he sticks around for a couple of years and helps Merc with developing the car and they win............well, wouldn't that be a good comparison to when he helped (led?) Ferrari back in the 90's? Expecting him to drive a 5th place car this year to 1st place in his first year after being off for 3 is not realistic.

(How am I doin' Shawn?)

Meh, the only thing hurting Schuey's legacy is Rosberg. ;)

Ross Brawn is no dummy. He did the same thing with Fezza with a young Schuey. Focusing on the 2011 program is a strategic decision to do as much as possible to develop a winning car.

And don't forget, he did it with Honda too. And look how that turned out for JB. ;)

European GP Highlights -

Webbers crash

Hamiltons amazing luck with the drive through penalty

Jenson unable to pass Kobayashi

Fernando & Ferarri bitching like none other

Kobayashi's amazing drive, passing Alonso and Buemi right at the end

I would have loved to see Jenson try earlier to close the gap on lewis but he did come away with fastest lap.

Disappointed, worst race this year.Confused rules about safety car came out bed for Ferrari.Big nice surprise Rubens and Williams.

I don't think it was the worst, it was def better than Bahrain, but overall a boring race.
