How 'bout that stock market?

Question for you guys...

I'm currently using Schwab to trade (averaging only 1 trade per week) and there fee's are 12.95 under 1,000 shares.

I'm looking to average around 3-5 trades per day and I have the feeling there are better/cheaper trading platforms/brokers out there for 10-20 per week.

Also I thought I remember reading on the Schwab site a while back that x amount of trades qualified you as a "day trader" and your account fee's increased. I can't seem to find the info now that I need it.

Better options out there for 3-5 on average per day? And what typically constitutes "day trading", hence higher fee's.

If you trade that much, you are flagged by the SEC, not by your broker, as a pattern day trader. You must have at least 25K in your account to do so. Your broker just has to report this information to the Feds.

Ameritrade's trading platform/console is second to none. They've eaten large trades for me when there were errors. Customer service is awesome. If you are an Apex service tier, ALL trades are 9.99 no matter the share lot.

It's just money. I can make more of it. I am healthly my family is healthy, that is what really matters. It's fustrating no doubt about that.

You see things the same was as I do. I workout hard at the gym a few hours a day, I would love to pay 100k and be in shape but it does not work that way :)

Thanks Ryan, STeve and Silverstone!

I'm assuming you've got to have 25k in "value" and not cash, correct...?

So as long as its there you can continue trading at "day trader" volume at whatever fee your broker charges and everything is good?

yes the requirement is 25k.

Long GS @ 101. Pray.

Apparently several billion worth of gold bugs came in to the market today, and I let them carry me right up to the peak of the mountain on my monitor.

Summary of my day:
Gold futures up, buy GG/ABX/AUY/AEM.
Gold futures still up.
And up.
And up.
Equities take a dip, check gold-still going up.
Buy more.
Gold goes up.
And up.
Sell.
I go home.

In between I messed with XTO/CHK/UNG and the financials but didn't get anything but some scalps out them. Some people made a $hit ton of money today and a few guys lost a ton, it was better then yesterday.

why isn't FCX up with gold up so far?

FCX faked me out twice early in the day when I thought it was going to play catch up so I left it alone. I was saying the same thing out loud and someone more or less said 'who cares' while looking over my shoulder at my other positions. That's the swing trader in me trying to rationalize things.

I haven't used ameritrade and silverstone is a very smart guy who probably knows more then I do, but interactive brokers is the best 'discount' broker for me. It has the best currency/intl market configuration and I like the options format. It's quite possible for mainly listed equities ameritrade is just as good or better.

IB is awesome as well. They have a very nice trading platform, and you can trade anything. The console is a little too much for me, though. I don't trade forex and options positions are very straight forward. Sometimes Steve talks about options strategies that are over my head. :)

I trade in large share lots, so Ameritrade with its flat fees was the best choice.

I did a little caculation on that aapl trade that you did. HAd you used a put spread the loss would have been 20% of what you said it was last time we talked on the phone.

Chad,

I use etrade at 5 dollar per trade, I average about 1 trade per day. Works pretty well so far, you can transfer fund from Etrade saving to securities account in real time.

lol

McCain says SEC chairman should be fired. LOL I love it, you know it's getting bad when the pizza dude told me the market is going to shit when he brought over my pizza today at lunch :)

sounds like the elevator boy story. Is it a sign we are going to go back up?

Sold SKF @ $151.00

Bought GS @ $91.82

GS plummeted in a near-instant! My SKF had just sold, and GS was at $100... in the time it took to enter my order (<60sec) it hit $93, then I clicked refresh and it was down to $87!! Got in a few seconds later and it was back up $5. Now all the way back up to $101 while SKF has cooled to below $140. Talk about fluctuations.

I would had an heart attack if I had STT in my profolio, down $30+ just 30 minutes ago and since bounced back and did a nice recovery.

Bought:
Ebay at $21.78
INTC at $18.08

Awesome exit and entry. I sold my SKF way too soon only to buy my GS way too early.
