What do you all think? Just spent the last three days trying to make this as perfect as possible. It is reversible as I had a spare window. I am on a weight reduction rampage, what's next? Saved approx 30lbs.

You should just get the lexan rear hatch if weight reduction is your goal. not only does it decrease your sprung weight, but since it is up so high it will lower the center of gravity.

Wow, a gimp mask for the NSX...that's new:biggrin:

I don't think it will do anything for aerodynamics when the speed builds up and it's bound to flutter loads....

You could always try it in red if you really want it...might blend in more?

Better off with the glass or lexan to smooth the line from the roof to the trunk....

Thanks for the input, I wanted to get an overall feel and look before I continue with any more details.

You did quality work and should be proud of the accomplishment. You broke new ground and weather it aesthetically works or not is a personal choice. I wonder if it will flap around or make noise at 70mph. Will engine heat ruin the fabric you used? Is the fabric you used waterproof? Fireproof? UVA rated?

Take it out on the street and see what other non NSX people think about it.

Thanks for the feedback. How is your apx? I was reading your build and almost bought it. I am trying to stay NA first before FI with weight. There are lots of vents and opennings, hoping this takes care of the heat. No test drive yet as I am thinking the wind will go over and not flow with the curve. If all else fails, I will be using mesh to replace the marine vinyl. Neighbors were adjusting to the new look, few says totally awesome while others are trying to problem solve some of the lines.

Needless to say, my hatch is staying off, and I will be trying different things before buying a lexan.

The flat profile looks awkward. Maybe if you add a butress extending back from the B-pillar (like the 599) it will look a little better.

Please comment more on the drag as it feels counter intuitive at this time.
The airstream would detatch from tue roofline at the sharp angle of your rear window. This steep angle would cause turbulence and increase drag. Its a similar concept to what happens behind almost every car but you are making another turbulent drag inducing section at the trailing edge of the cabin above the rear trunk. If youre happy with it dont worry about other peoples opinions. It wont make your car unsafe and burst into flames.

A curved Lexan piece would cost a lot of mulah! You've turned a nice looking Fighter plane design into a truncated chopped up mess. I'm sorry but I might as well tell it like it is. Unless you are out for some weight saving madness that virtually means little in terms of acceleration - guess you took the spare out too??? I would never do that to my beautiful NSX - that is one of the things I loved about my car - the black roof and that glass back there....really makes the look - imho. I can't imagine that you really like it? Do you really like it? Or are you after a conversation piece otherwise why would you do that? It makes so little sense in the overall big picture of mods. Got to be another way of making it faster....other than an SC or TC.

Reinstall the rear hatch or go Lexan. Not only does that contraption totally ruin the lines of the car, I think you'd faint if you saw what your drag coefficients are in a wind tunnel or with CFD.

I agree with the rest it doesnt make the NSX look good.

does that 30Lbs really make the difference in traffic?

take the passengerseat out, take the passenger airbag out,
take the radio out, take out the passenger carpet, take out the passenger seatbelts,

you have over 100lbs right there.

and put the glass back on.

I like the idea and have thought about it myself... not for weight, because I like they way the NSX looks with the hatch up.

I'd like to see VRoooM take a stab at this. I bet it would look wicked.

Oh, nice to know there are like minds. I like the look without the hatch as well; but mocked something up really quick just to get a glimpse of what it could be. The OE rear hatch does resemble the camaro which was what bothered me the most though.

Yup,

deleted:

Spare,
All the tools,
Footwell speakers
Floor mats and replaced them with (09 TSX mats)
Front headlight lens, motor, ballasts, and wires,
all four tow hooks,
wiper motor, blades, and fluid,
AC (in the planning stage).
engine cover,
now engine hatch,

I am trying to keep my completed interior though.

I saw that you sold your car, will you be getting another one?

Wow.. is all I can say. Not trying to be an a-hole but I really don't like that at all.

Also, A/C? are you serious? That's a pretty big commitment all in the name of weight savings. I can see where this is going and you might not end up with much of a car once you're all done :)

Btw.. have you looked into the 02+ headlight conversion? How about the front and rear alum bumper beam mod? These seem more like sensible weight saving mods if you want to keep the car somewhat streetable.

Also, can you explain your avatar? lol... i'm sure many of us would like to know.

EDIT: Opps.. you said the headlights. You removed those too! :)

Laminar airflow problem - you see this behind every car, in this case you basically added to rear ends to the car.

The car is like a wing, the less turbulent air, the less total drag. Thats why planes are pointy at both the front and rear end - and lets face it, nothing screams need for aerodynamics more than aircraft.

Again, there is no ego in this thread, all comments are welcome and I will not think any different of my fellow primers. No one will ever sound like an A-hole, or jerk for posting an opinion. I can just slap the OEM hatch back on and call it a day.

Now that is out of the way, the unofficial weight loss thread has crazier and more extreme mods then I do. I want to keep a full interior and as a stock look as possible.

The beams could go; but I wanted to minimize the removal of my body panels to prevent the disruptions of my original lines.

AC is useless without the top.

No bug eyes here. Now, that is a disruption in the NSX lines.

I think the rear is the worst angle for the NSX to look at. I can say that this is a totally different and better look.

My Avatar is to remind me of another happy day.
