Deleted Rear Hatch And Created This, Thoughts....

From the aerodynamical point of view this design losses in every aspect.

- more drag to air detaching from the surface
- more uplift at the rear as the trunk-spoiler doesn't work due to the turbulences. You could dismount it also.

I'm not a fan of the design.

WOW!!! I'll bet replacing those NSX floor mats with TSX floor mats perhaps saved you a few ounces...

You've got to be kidding me.

The laminar flow over a NSX with the hatch installed:

This is how it will be with the hatch removed, look at the turbulence:
(Obviously I could not find a pic of a NSX without hatch, so this convertible will have to make my point)

man that's a lot of work you went through. I commend you on all that work and on being creative. Having said this... it's not the prettiest thing I've seen.

Have you done the obvious?

1) Targa cover (which you seem to have still?) VERY heavy
2) Spare tire
3) Tools in trunk
4) Lightweight battery
5) Lightweight exhaust
6) Lightweight cats or pipes
7) suspension
8) brakes
9) Bumper beams front and rear (sub in light ones)
10) B-Pillar covers and Air intake covers (both heavy)
11) Stereo
12) Wheels and tires

Have you done all the above?

dude don't waste your time. sell the car and it will be 0 lbs !!

seriously, nice try but that look isn't it.

This has been done, although I don't have pictures any longer.

There was an owner in Japan who lightened his nsx considerably for track use, and fabricated a lightweight rear decklid from fiberglass. The car was parted out and sold a few months ago, including this custom decklid.

Frankly, ignoring the dubious nature of aerodynamic modifications, vinyl is the wrong material for this type of project; you might be better served by purchasing a lexan rear hatch, and removing material, or a carbon fiber hatch and making similar modifications. I suppose vinyl and buttons are cost-effective, if unappealing. Having fabricated similar parts for a sailboat, it's rather time-consuming - one might ask themselves if it's worth the effort, when compared to a product like the FAL lexan rear hatch.

I just did a search, they only have integra and rsx, can you please locate the link for the NSX.

To be fair and Honest, and I like and I don't.

LIKE: Unique idea and passion were used.

DON'T LIKE: Show us a profile pic, you know it does looks like an "El Camino" .. which is car I LOVE, but an "EL CaminSeX" it's be a weird Idea after all.

Thanks for sharing, I am sure is reversible, I'll send you a Photoshoped idea this days of what to do with the hatch that someone like you -with the skills- should try, but again, it might be also a "bad Idea" lol!

What a process its been with that car heh? Yeah, I have been pondering about Wils APX for some time now; however, I have developed some OCD with this weight reduction thing that I cannot seem to get over.

Ok my instant reaction was it was made of flexible kevlar as in bullet proof rear window protection under the rear hatch... But then I read on...

1. Wrong car to start with if your after weight reduction. Should have started with coupe.
2. how about a Polycarbonate Lexan hatch to get your weight down...

I commend your ingenuity and lateral thinking though!
