Chameleon NSX - Check it out..

Hi guys I had my 1992 NSX completely repainted. The original color was black. Please take a moment to look at the picture and let me know what you guys think. We are all NSX enthusiast , And I would love to know what you guys think??

My neighbor works for DuPont in their Automotive Paint Division for the local Volvo truck plant. This paint looks like the Dupont "Chrome Illusion" paint. It costs something insane like $4,000 per gallon. My neighbor painted his golf cart that color. Dupont makes Chrome Illusion in a variety of base colors including candy apple red that is insane! Yes, this is the same color used by Ford on one of the limited edition Mustang Cobra.

I think this color is the worst of them all, but a more subtle variations are available.

The price I recently paid per quart was $360 and was to paint a new hood. Originally it took something like six quarts to paint my Mustang. It's not too difficult to use this paint as long as new spray tips are used on the sprayers. Also, it's easy to blend in with new panels because of the "flippinf" of colors that takes place.

It's a neat paint, but a lot better suited on a muscle car, not an NSX imho.

I will post a few more pictures when I upload them to my computer. The picture I have posted doesn't even come close as compared to seeing it for your self. I've had people from every race, nationality. From little kids all the way to old ladies compliment the car on it's paint job. Everyone has their own opinion on what paint job looks the best.

With the chameleon paint job that I have it seems that everyone who sees it, love it. I will record an mpeg video of the car, so you may see it from all directions. Hopefully this will show the true colors of the car.

The car get's amazing amount of attention :D I have to fill gas late at night, since I already know what to expect during day hours. People filling gas ask all sorts of questions. It's not that I don't like the attention, sometimes it just gets annoying when you have to be somewhere ASAP.
:D Here is another picture that I happened to have, I will get some more.

Ok, but with 4 Qts to a gallon, that still makes it $1,440 per gallon just for the paint. I knew it was well over $1,000 per gallon and is priced at nearly $2,000 per gallon to some consumers. If it takes 1.5-2 gallons then it would cost $4,000 in pain to paint a car and not $4,000 per gallon, but I knew I remembered the $4,000 figure. Sorry it wasn't the cost per gallon. :)

...makes gas, milk, even excellent champagne seem cheap.

It is an attention grabbing color for sure, just not my personal thing for an NSX. I like the more elegant and stylish colors that are offered, and just do not picture a high end exotic looking 'right' with that color changing paint. But, as long as you like it, then it is alright for you. That is the beauty of a free country. :D

Very interesting! I am curious when and where you had it painted and how much it cost?

Did you paint it just to change the color, or did it need a repaint anyway and you decided to go with this color instead of the original?

Are there other combinations of color-shifting paint, or is the purple and green combination used on the Mustang and on this NSX the only choice?

I had the car painted specifically for the reason to change colors. It took a lot of thinking and I used many computer programs to see what the car would look like once the paint job was completed. Finally after 2 months of careful planning, I gave the keys to my car to a local shipping company. The car was then shipped down to San Diego and the paint job went underway. I was very anxious as to what the car would look like. Two weeks later I got news the pain job was completed.

Only Dupont could produce such beautiful colors. The shipping bill was at no cost to me as my friend worked for the shipping company. Total cost for the paint job including labor $9,700. The bill was very steep indeed, but after seeing the car in person, I truly admire the hard work they had placed in painting the car. The looked even more beautiful than what I had seen on the computer. In person the car will just grab your attention even if you have never been a fan of this particular paint job. I had sent pictures of the car. They said that the car looked great with it's new paint job. When they had a chance to to see the car in person. They told me that it was much better than what they saw in the pictures. The paint job will want you to follow the car closely when driving, just to see the car change colors. And Yes I have had cars follow me, and change from lane to lane to see the color change. :D

I just read my post above, wow! I was disappointed at myself for not proof reading. There are a lot of grammar, and spelling mistakes. Next time I wont just type full speed without reading what I am typing.

Anyhow, the bill was steep and I don't regret it one bit.

Thanks for reading.

There is a orange, copper, pearl too.

At my car dealership right now we currently have a '04 Cobra Convertible with the Mystic paint scheme. It will set you back a cool $46k:eek:
It takes a special type of person to what a car that color for sure. Personally I prefer red on my cars. But to each his own.
I would like to know if you did the paint job complete and thorough as in the door jambs, engine compartment, inner fender wells, under hood, under trunk lid, etc. Or if you just had the exterior, visible parts, painted like that?
I'm sure you are aware that when/if you ever decide to sell it you have to find just the right person looking for that because the resale value is totally gone.
Either way, as long as you are happy with the results that is truly all that matters.
Enjoy !!:D

I like wild colors on exotic cars
(that is why I have a white NSX)

Really.....am thinking of getting my X painted in a Plymouth Cuda Lime Green. Can anyone post a picture of the NSX in this paint scheme? (using paint shop software)

Thanks!

Personally I would have spent the 10k on a turbo kit and some other mods. Black is the best color for the NSX. I would be afraid that the color would get a little old very soon. One of those things I'd like to see, but would never do..

That is odd. I saw an identical car for sale last year on eBay and it was listed as being in Florida. It was also a 1992 NSX with ivory interior, an identical paint job and even the same exact wheels.

What serial number is your car?

I saw a supra with the same exact paint job as mine. The car was lowered beyond any car I have seen. The ground clearance was at the most 3 inches. When I seen the pic it was parked in a driveway. I don't know how the owner was able to drive it up the driveway without scraping the bottom. When I think more about this it leads me to believe the car has some kind of hydraulic system.

My paint job was originally completed 2 1/2 years ago. I brought the subject as a new paint job. The reason for this is because after 2 years of driving the vehicle I had lots of scratches, small tiny rock chips- and the worst thing was backing up I hit my neighbors basketball court. Normally it is on his driveway but that day he had it towards the middle of the street.

Oh Yeah! One day I was pulling up to a 7-11. I was trying to park but I did not see those cement blocks on the parking lot.
Oooh this one really messed up my car.

Finishing my story from the above post. Anyhow when I hit the curb, my fromt bumper was cracked and it looked really funky.

Basically a few months ago- I took the car to the bodyshop to
re-paint the car where needed, get a new front and rear bumper. A lot of paint was involved since I had so many minor scratches, nicks, chips etc. This set me back $2,800 but the body shop did a great job and the paint looked even better than before,

I am not too familiar with paint, but I believe he added clear coat or some kind of chemical over the entire car to give it a brand new shiny look. I would be embarrassed to show you the picture of the car before it was touched up. You would think that I didn't know how to drive.:D

Hmm. That might explain it! Assuming you didn't have the car listed on eBay, I wonder if it was a fraudulent listing by someone else using pictures of your car. It seems very unlikely they are two 1992 NSXs with ivory interior and the exact same wheels and custom color-shift paint job. If you would post or PM me the VIN or at least serial number on your car I will try and look into it some more.

LUD! I can't believe you remember that. I have moved many times due to personal reasons regarding me and my brother's business. I had to relocate many times, I have lived in New York, California, Florida, Texas and a few more cities.

I placed my car on EBAY planning to sell it, because I figured it would make things much more simple since I had moved three times already. I had it on ebay for 5 days and everyday I was thinking whether to sell it or not. Thanks to my friend that works for the shipping company. He encouraged me not to sell it, and he promised me that he would ship the car for me as many times as needed.. I pulled it off ebay and decided not to sell it. LUD-- I am impressed that you remember seeing my car on ebay. I told you it stands out. :D

Another chameleon NSX. This one for sale in Dallas. I think I recall some conversation about it in a past thread, but couldn't find it. Looks like it even comes with a lift kit.

Lud-- I had so much money invested in my NSX that it would be best if I keep it. If I were to sell it, according to how much 1992 NSX's sell for on Ebay. They sell from $23 to 30k maybe more. I have spent 12k on the paint and rims. If I were to sell add $10k to a 1992 NSX average going price $25k. It would be difficult to get $35k for it. That was another reason I decided to keep it. It's one of a kind and hard replace.

I saw the T-top chameleon Nsx in one of the posting above. The paint job seems a little dull to me. But who knows If I see it in person I would have a different opinion. p.s. The picture of the chameleon t-top nsx caught me by surprise, I thought I was the only person that owned a chameleon NSX, I guess I was wrong. :p
