NSX vs NSX-R underbody pics

Below are pics of NSX and NSX-R underbody, showing that the NSX-R has no sound insulation (presumably on the inside as well).



I wonder if there's an easy way to remove the coating I know on the inside people use dry ice but that would be hard to do on the bottom.

I had my cars underside dry ice blasted recently. It will remove the nasty black crap, but not the brown/tan sound insulation stuff you see on the underside of the car. That is all in the wheel wells too underneath the black stuff.

Yeah dry ice blasting will not remove the insulation. What you need is to let dry ice sit on it for a while until the insulation freezes, then you break it up while it's frozen solid and it will come out in large chunks. But that is obviously hard to do when it's the underbody.

What is that black tar-like coating and what is it for?

Edit: it's tar, and it's to prevent corrosion and damage.

I removed the tar recently; steam cleaner, engine cleaner spray and plastic scraper, and minimal use of tar remover.
Is quite a time consuming job though.
In tough spots the body color paint comes off, the yellowish insulation doesn't ...

Yeah some people think you should leave it on, but since the chassis is aluminum and is also painted, and since my car rarely sees inclement weather or snow/salt I opted to remove it. Also a few pounds of weight savings lol.

I don't think I would remove it manually due to the risk of paint damage as @dadoke mentioned.

So that R doesn't even seem to be painted (or is it just painted silver). I couldn't sleep at night with raw alum as oxidized alum is as eeky as rust. Like U all that dry ice job post was compelling. Been wondering about a possible "tinny" resonance in the cabin that does occur with street rods (but they are generally so loud you wouldn't hear it) and of course the sound of stones pinging off the bottom. I guess ideally one would strip the thick oe stuff and replace with a new thin coating. What a mess to do - I love to buy tools, but a rotisary (SP) is not my list he-he. I'm sure yous took proper precaution of your blast off. I worked for a Cryo company for awhile and we never ever let that scary minus 450 F stuff "get out". I do love the purist mentality!

The black/tan undercoating is presumably for sound deadening. Many people haven't ridden in a tin can like a stripped out 90's civic before, but rocks and gravel make a ton of noise when it hits the car. If i ever get my chassis dry ice blasted i will have them remove the dirt but not the undercoating.

Not hating on anyone’s choices btw. I’ve been there with the stripped 90’s Hondas which is why I mentioned it. The NSX is my old man cruiser.
