Why Mod an NSX?

I have been wondering lately why a lot of you feel the need to modify your cars. The NSX has always had great reviews as one of the best cars on the planet. Why did you feel the need to change it?

Is the NSX perhaps the most modded supercar? I don't really hear of ferrari owners modifying their cars (except maybe a TUBI exhaust). Supra's dont really count.

When I shop around for NSX's, I am amazed how few of them are still in stock condition. I must admit though, I love most of the modifications you guys to do the cars. I think larger wheels make a huge difference! And the supercharger is simply amazing.

I drove my first stock NSX this weekend (92, 70K miles), and it was incredible. The stock car has an amazing sound! I have only been able to be passenger in a SC NSX, but the acceleration was outstanding!

Anyway, why did you mod your car?

I use my car mostly for the track. I ran into problems with brake shudder using the stock brakes, which I believe is caused by hot spots on the rotors. I switched to aftermarket rotors and pads, plus cooling ducts, to avoid these problems.

At the track, the fun is in taking the turns as fast as you can. Going down the straights isn't that big a deal, so I don't need more power. Granted, these are driving schools and lapping days; if they were competitive events where the goal were to minimize lap times, I might consider a power upgrade.

No.

Plenty of Ferrari owners modify their cars, according to one of the Ferrari dealers here in town.

Actually, plenty of them are in stock condition, and plenty more are stock except for the wheels/tires. I think the enthusiasts who populate these boards overrepresent the number of modifications. There are lots of cars out there belonging to people who aren't as passionate and don't wish to spend lots of time on the Internet discussing their cars, and those owners are less likely to modify their cars. Just my O, based in part on how many cars are still stock at get-togethers like NSXPO.

I think one of the other reasons for modifying the NSX is the rate of return you get on the car. Some cars don't take to modifications as easily as others, and the NSX does seem to benefit from several decent modifications.

There is a reason why a lot of people have upgraded the suspension, stuck on better tires, or increased the horsepower of the car.

Finding a completely stock NSX is relatively easy, particularly the '97 and up pack since they are still relatively new.

While the NSX is a great car in stock form and I have a great deal of respect for the guys that built it, the reality is that the builders work under a different set of constraints and compromises than I am willing to live with. I don't care how M35-54, HHI $300K + respond to the car. I only care how I respond to the car.

Customizing my NSX makes it unique to me.

Also, certain modifications address certain weaknesses I see in the car according to my taste... brakes, tranny, exhaust note, suspension. I must be one of the only people on here who thinks the NSX has enough power. My engine is fairly stock with the exception of billet oil pump gears.

Very good question! I chose to modify my NSX based on what I wanted out of it, and at the same time that ruin the drivability and reliability of the car. I wasn't too concerned with the power, that is taken care of with my other car however I did feel that the looks could be updated. I added the Wings West front spoiler, side skirts, and rear spats. I removed the front emblem and sticker in the rear light assembly, and painted the rear valence red to give the car a more updated monochromatic look.

When I bought my NSX, it came with 17/18 BBS RSII wheels, ss brake lines, HKS exhaust, chip, Comptech non-compliant rear set-up, springs, and the roof was painted red.

So now I have what I feel is the NSX the way it should have been built. Others may disagree but that's the good thing about freedom of speech.

Everyone has their own version of a dream car. As good as the NSX is, to most people, its just a platform to building their dream car. Most people would leave it stock and say, thats my dream car. Then again, swould say, thats my dream car, BUT...maybe with this and that minor change on it, now THAT would resemble a bit closer to what Im truly thinking about. I do it because I love the car so much and also it intrigues me to work on it and find out what and why and how it all works as the beautiful machine the NSX is.

Actually I think you have define mods or put them into buckets. I'd say yes Ferrari owners do performance mods but I think appearance mods are less extreme and those that are made are less dramatic than some of the NSX mods.

Maybe. But I have yet to go to an NSX event (with 20 or more cars) where more than 5 percent of the cars have appearance mods (and by that, I assume you're referring to wings and body kits, not just wheels).

Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course...

As for modifying the cars, it does come down to the owner. I actually shifted to the NSX from an (ack!) 1995 Pontiac Trans/Am, because I looked at what it would cost to make that car handle, and realized that I could get an NSX that handled at least that well for the same price.

Now, I'm looking at the NSX in the other way, what can I do to up the power. Just so long as I don't make the transition back to the T/A, I should be fine!

But it's all in making the car what you want it to be. I love the feel of acceleration, and I have a lot of fun taking my car through the twisties, so power and suspension mods are high on my list, while other mods (like stereo and exterior) are lower on the list.

Just my .02, YMMV.

Who wants to spend that kind of money on a car, and pull up next to an identical one at a traffic light? Modifying your car is like modifying your appearance. Cutting your hair, gettin new clothes, growing a beard. You're still you, but like the old cliche says, "Change is inevitable". When you modify your car, you give it your own personal stamp. There arent many NSX's in Baton Rouge. I think there were 7 registered last time I checked. Even though thats a very small amount, with the mods I have, it makes my car even more unique

I've owned my NSX for almost eleven years. During that time, aside from when I was at an NSX Club event or gathering, I have never pulled up next to another NSX at a traffic light, identical or otherwise.

I've seen them in the distance and caught up to say hi but haven't pulled up to a light with another NSX next to me unless we were crusin.

Also you guys forget there are other mods that create differientiation... let's not forget the babes (or hunks if that's what you're into) who sit next to us in our rides.

Sometimes I'm trying to figure out which one attracts more attention.
