Well, after a long and agonizing process I traded my 98 in on the 03; the lease was too good of a deal to pass up!

Thanks very much to PFORPAUL for pointing me towards the car I eventually wound up with. I learned some interesting things about my 98 on the trade which sucked, but what can you do.

The new look has definitely grown on me and I really like the front view in person. The HIDs are just awesome and the 03 auto tranny feels a bit livelier than the 98, but that may be psychological.

I'll try to post some pics when I get a chance and I'll keep my eyes peeled for checks on my old VIN. I can give any prospective buyer the straight dish.

Thanks PFORPAUL! Re: my 98, they claimed the car had had extensive paint work done and that it hadn't been done well. Mechanically, my car was excellent and I was sure of that, but body work is something I guess Im not good at spotting.

I was inclined to take their word for it since I had bought the car from a used car dealer. They did validate that the frame was straight, alignment was good and that the car was mechanically great, but I took a beating because of the "obvious repaint".

I think I did surprise them, however, by having complete service records from Acura of Bedford Hills covering everything I had had done and by having a Carfax for my car on hand.

My old VIN was JH4NA1261WT000007 and I've still got the Carfax saved if anyone ever runs into the car. I can tell you that I did tires and three oil changes in the 7k miles I owned the car and that the car was running fantastic and had gotten the mechanical thumbs up from Acura of Beford Hills and Acura of Ocean.

As for the repaint history, I'm not sure what the deal was there, but the car had always looked pretty good to me. It may end up being a good value for someone who mainly cares about the mechanical fitness.

spookyp,

I wouldn't worry too much about the '98. There's a huge variation in the quality of bodywork. A really bad body shop job is easily noticeable - paint flaws, misaligned panels, etc. What may look like an "obvious repaint" to a body shop expert might be indistinguishable for most of us. If it looked great to you, it probably was.

Thanks Ken! It's good to hear that I'm not just completely blind. I can't stress enough the importance of an official PPI to anyone looking for any used car, but especially an NSX. What may look fine to you could very well come back to haunt you. In an exotic like the NSX, things like paintwork are a real killer too since most people want a tip-top car outside and in.

How can the tranny be better when it is the same tranny. Maybe your auto tranny was beat on by somebody.

EDIT:

I am envious. Congrats

spooky,

Is it possible that they could have been "talking down" your trade-in?

It's been known to happen.

Congratulations!!

Tony, the auto is most likely 100% the same... My old one was just fine, but the new car seemed a little quicker. I think it's purely psychological though

Jimbo, I'm inclined to believe them on it actually. They were shooting pretty straight on the wholesale value and mileage deduction and everything was going pretty well until they got it under the "hot lights" and did the panel inspect. Some of the stuff they mentioned I probably should/could have caught, but it's kind of tough to spot unless it's already been pointed out.

NSXaholic, pics are coming

gotta remember to get the camera out!

Spookyp,
I am in brooklyn too. I live in Bensonhurst. Want to meet up sometime so I can take some pics? and maybe give me a ride to see how a 290hp nsx performs. Cuz I only have the 270hp one. send me email at [email protected] thanks!

Sure! Mine is an auto though, so it will perform a lot worse!

Staying with the auto is what we refer to as "one of life's compromises". All my wife asks is that I stick with the auto so she can feel comfortable driving in an emergency, so it's hard to argue

With our NYC traffic, I have to admit there are many days where Im kind of happy to have the auto (although once the traffic clears, I long for the 6-speed!)

It's Long Beach Blue Pearl with camel interior. I've always been a silver guy (*cough* laziness *cough*), but blue is just awesome (brownie points with admin assured).

It's got the sportshift on the column, but I rarely used it on the 98. I'm a little skeptical about how much of a performance difference it makes. It's still an auto tranny with a TC rather than a true sequential which is a manual tranny without a clutch pedal.

If you're willing to divulge, I'd love to hear what lease deal was too good to pass up.

It's the official one from Honda. Details are at:

congrats!

if its possible to easily back your trade-in out of the deal, what type of money would you have had to pay to leave the dealer with tax, license, + $1599?

Without my trade-in mess it'd be pretty straightforward. $799/month with local tax (tax requirements on a lease vary heavily state to state), first payment, security deposit and license fees due at signing.

The $1599 is the first payment and security deposit. Tax can be either paid in cash or rolled into the lease. The only other fees above the $1599 would be the DMV stuff.

SPOOK
Please check your your residual and cap cost
on your lease papers.Maybe the automatic is
not part of the program and they modified the
program. I am being quote a cap cost of
$82318 and a residual of 55004 with 12,000
miles.

I drove your old car yesterday-the automatic
is great and that is the only way to go for
me. They have sold it to a wholesaler for
about 4k more than your trade. I offered them
6k more than your trade price.Something is funny on that car-I suspect they found something and just wanted to ditch it-I thought the paint looked fine.

Just out of curiousity--how long did you own the car-you also said you would post the details of the old car-JUST CURIOUS-would you
have sold the car to a friend?

Congrats! I've been tempted to take advantage of that lease also....

I just purchased a 03 Silverstone 6sp today from Rosenthal Acura in Md but got a better deal than what the factory was offering. I initially preferred the Long Beach Blue with black leather but the dealer with the Silverstone could not arrange a swap with another Acura dealer but offered me a deal a killer deal instead. Under Acura's promotion, I would pay my state taxes+security+first months payment ($5,100) up front with payments of 799.00 for 38 months with a residual, if I remembered correctly of 57k. But instead, I paid zero down and only my first month's payment. The 39 month lease consisted of $839.00 payments with a cap cost of 80k and some change. The residual value is the same as the amount offered through the lease program. The dealer who had the Long Beach Blue in IL could not come close to this deal, stating that zero down+first months payment would put me at 920 for 39 months. Anyone who is interested should contact this dealer because they are scheduled to receive another Silverstone shorty. Ask for Jeff and tell them that Gene sent you.

Congrats for your new car and having you in the community. Anyways, I'm not trying to be a jerk but why as far as my understanding goes, leasing does not equal to purchasing.

I just bought my 02 for 73k and was just wondering if any one else got a better deal? I thought it was ok, the car had 32miles on
it and is super clean. They threw in a cd player and keyless entry too!

Is that a good deal or did I get ripped off? Any other 02 or 03 buyers out there?
