The Official 2024 F1 thread

Why would Perez move the wheel when he was going straight down the track where he wanted to go? Two guys playing chicken trying to grab the slipstream. They knew what they were doing. EOE here. When you play chicken, sometimes both folks lose.
Maybe a little bit of red mist by both drivers, but as noted; if neither lift, both lose.

As per the per the FIA... Perez, had the options..

“It was thus apparent that while ahead, and having the right to drive his line, Sainz did move slightly towards a car that he had limited vision of. At the same time, there was nothing unusual about Perez’s line, but he could have done more to avoid the car that he had a better view of.

“In conclusion, the Stewards deem this to be a racing incident with neither driver being predominantly at fault, and take no further action.”

Nobody mentioned Piastri? That guy is one cool cucumber. I like Norris but I think Piastri is already a more complete driver.
This is the best second half of a season ever.
I think Verstappen has enough points advantage to secure another Drivers Championship, especially with the wins being spread between the other top teams and drivers. A DNF or two for him would certainly liven things up though!
I believe he's used all his PU's as well, so there may be grid penalties for him in future races...

Best race of the season so far - Oscar made the perfectly judged move at just the right time to surprise Charles, and then defended stoutly but always fairly. As above, Oscar is the best driver in the second half of the year, and is looking good for 2025.
The crash at the end was coming for a few laps - just a racing incident between two drivers hungry for the podium.
George mopped up, Lando got good points, Max got less. Alonso somehow managed to keep going to get 5th, despite being totally anonymous all race. Great points for Albon & Colapinto - they both drove so well.
All Brits got points, with Lewis & Ollie sneaking into the top 10.

If perez and sainz danced like that at the beginning of the race they would not have come together. red mist it was.

Just Danny Ric helping out a buddy (and former teammate) to keep Max 1 point further ahead of Norris.

I'm sure the fact that it was the RB jr team had nothing to do with it. Brown would have made the same move if their positions were reversed.

Outstanding win for Lando, solid second from Max, and fighting third for Oscar. George did well to keep ahead of Charles, Lewis, Carlos and Fernando as well as Nico, Sergio, and Franco. Unlucky failure for Alex with debris in the side radiator duct overheating the engine.
Will that fastest final lap taking the point off Lando be enough for RedBull to keep Danny Ric over Liam Lawson? I hope not…

Lando hugging coulthard after water dowzing was endearing or something...🥵

yep but man Alonso still has the fire....

Norris lost the US GP at the first corner - had he got to the apex and not allowed Max to force him wide, the result may have been different - it is now looking like Max is firmly in the driving seat for the WDC. Ferrari got the strategy and pit stop timing just right for Leclerc - it’s now a full-on 3-way fight for the constructors title.
Good results for Hulkenburg, Russell, Colapinto, and especially Liam Lawson. Poor day for Perez (yet again), Tsunoda, Alpine, Aston Martin, and disappointing for Hamilton.

Nick,
What are your thoughts on Norris’ penalty?
It seems like F1 is not consistent about giving the driver on the outside line room to make the corner, and in this case, not penalizing Verstappen for going wide as well while at the same time penalizing Norris for going wide?

The penalty had to be applied - that’s the rule - but as Max went off too, it seems more than a bit harsh. Also, penalties don’t seem to be applied on lap 1, so there is that inconsistency too. Max is always aggressive on lap 1 if he needs to be.
In the situation near the end of the race between Lando and Max, Lando should have either given the place back immediately, or disappeared into the distance knowing he would get the 5 secs as per the rules. He tried option 2 but didn’t quite get enough distance (time).
The teams and drivers know the rules (as they stand this season) - perhaps they will get together over the winter to amend the rule to change it when both drivers leave track limits… who knows what will happen?
My preference would be for grass / gravel etc. at more corners to keep the cars on circuit, thereby making it clearer where you can pass, and for the stewards to enforce those that push the overtaking driver off track by not leaving at least a car’s width of room… the overtaking car has to have some protection otherwise no-one will be able to overtake anywhere.

Agree I feel like he should

Agree, it felt like Lando should have just given the place back - with his pace it seemed likely he would've caught him again on the main straight and into Turn 1. It was pretty thrilling to watch the battle though if you were on Turn 12!

Great race for the Ferraris - strategy paid off well. Leclerc looked on a race of his own out there. Some great battles between he and Sainz in the sprint race too. Solid showing for Haas though a little unfortunate for K-mag in the GP.

Good weekend overall!

Great win for Carlos - Max had a shocker and really deserved two 10 second penalties for not enough racing room being given, and a red mist moment forcing Lando off the track and not intending to make the corner. Checo was appalling - not acknowledging that he started 2meters ahead of his grid line, then poor driving whenever he was challenged.
Lando had great pace in the second stint and deserved the second place over Charles - Lewis had the advantage over George later in the race, probably because of damage to George’s front wing.
Good points for Haas, not quite enough for Oscar to help McLaren in the Constructors.
Yet again, bad luck for Williams, especially for Alex being taken out by Yuki, and then a penalty for Franco for a collision with Liam. Fernando and Lance were nowhere for Aston Martin, Pierre grabbed a good point for Alpine.

Looks like things will be spicy in Brazil

Yes interesting soap opera script of 2 fast drivers leaving strong teams with more racing to go..
Danaca is hitting the gym hard, and has very low body fat...
