Tendonitis - Golfer's elbow.. ouch

Acupuncturist/Chiropractor Here.

A 30 minutes acupuncture session will open your eyes. If you call an acupuncturist ask if they practice Dr. Richard Tan technique.

I can tell you that most of my patient respond of my patient fells at least 70% better after a few minutes inserting the needle.

Of course laying off the weights/golf until you are full rested will prevent re-exacerbation.

By the way, acupuncture is only 4000 years old.

Just got my right elbow done yesterday Dec 12 in the afternoon.
Pretty easy procedure, I'm sure I could do it myself now....lol!
Got a little sore last night when the freezing came out and stiff and sore this
morning.
Feeling better now at 3 pm though.
Life is good.
I'll report back.

Trev,

How is the elbow?

It was great for two weeks, It was a wonderful feeling not to have that nagging pain.
I did however go back to the gym and did some light weights and I aggravated the situation a bit so I stopped and then a few days later did a little more 1 plate lifting on the circuit machines for mobility and then again I had night time pain. So I stopped and had my follow up and he told me not to use weights and come in for another shot and that was yesterday.
This time my elbow hurts from the injections and freezing needles. Hope it dies down tonight. I will just go to the gym and do cardio and stretching for the next month and will check in here.

I took 3 months off. Went back last night. Did very light weight. Bench with 125, 25lbs dumbbell stuff. Feels OK. I am going to keep going light for a while and hope I can slowly build up.

Tendonitis SUX.

Any update? I have done 3 weeks of Physical Therapy and its no better. They said I might want to try that injection you did.

I took a third shot on the outside of my elbow, where he was suppose to be treating me March 5/2012. I am not sure where things got crossed up.
The inside is real good though!!!!
This last shot was a hurtful occasion with me running to the store to get Toradol for the pain.
After 3 pills at 6 hour intervals, the intense pain went away.
Today I feel things are much better, but still there.
So I am hoping after 3 weeks, it will be less.
I have to see him for follow up on the 26th and am hoping for success, cause this is a drag.
Thats my story.

I was really wanting a better story, others have had better.

I get it in my foot once in a while from running. Best thing I've found is to take it easy for a week or two, no running, limited walking, and just let my body do its thing.

Those couple of weeks seem to take forever to pass though when all you want to do is get outside and run.

Cortisone shots carry a risk of complications, such as:

  • Death of nearby bone (osteonecrosis)
  • Joint infection
  • Nerve damage
  • Skin and soft tissue thinning around injection site
  • Temporary flare of pain and inflammation in the joint
  • Tendon weakening or rupture
  • Thinning of nearby bone (osteoporosis)
  • Whitening or lightening of the skin around injection site

I went for an MRI yesterday. I have an appointment with the DOC next Friday. I guess my options at this point are the injections or surgery. Neither sound very appealing, but I am miserable not being able to work out or play golf.

I changed tennis racquets and got tennis elbow. I went to my doctor for three shots into my elbow over about a 6 month span. It still didnt get better. He recommended a specialist. The specialist gave me another injection but stretched my tendon before and after. He showed me two exercises I could do to stretch that tendon out. After two weeks I was cured. I still do the stretching before I play tennis. The pain hasnt returned. I was to the point where I thought it was permanent.

With that said, I know golfers elbow is basically the opposite of tennis elbow. Its the lower tendon. There must be a series of stretches to lengthen that tendon.

Was that cortizone injections you were getting?

Sort of. It was a cocktail of cortizone, marcane, and something else. I cant recall, but I'll find out. I have several friends that are doctors and I'll be seeing the one that did the injection tonight. I'll ask him what all was in there and see what he recommends for Golfers elbow. I have a pretty nasty scar from where one of the injections....it kinda blew out of the hole when i bent my elbow....

I read a study on injections, 3 groups - Platelet, Blood, and Saline. In 6 months there was no noticeable difference between the groups. Pretty depressing for me.:frown:

I feel for you. I went through this - ice hockey 3-4 times per week - hurt so bad I thought I'd have to quit. Had a cortisone injection, no fun at all. It stuck around for ~ two years. It finally eased. Sometimes I think the only answer is rest, and time.
Now I note a lot of guys in their early forties go through this.
I hope you ditch it soon.

really? Is it better to have to wait 3 months for one like in Canada?

LOL... 3 months if you're lucky try 6 months. It's sad that we (Canada) once had one of the best medical systems in the world.

It's funny this topic is on here as I too got tendonitis about 6 weeks ago from lifting too heavy at the gym (and going 5 times a week). I took 5 weeks off the gym and back yesterday. I still feel it but not as bad as at the beginning.

I used a strap but I was told that's not good as it cuts blood circulation to the tendon, which is the prime reason you get tondonitis. I'm not sure if this is true or not. Also I was told using a band/brace will reduce the muscle strength in that area. So I'm not sure what to do anymore.
I've beein using voltaren 3 to 4 times a day for the last 2 weeks. It seems to help a bit.

Just got back from the doc. Not great news. It is still totally inflamed, but he doesn't want to do surgery yet. (nor do i)

Results of MRI were:
1.Mild-to-moderate common flexor tendonosis with mild common flexor muscle strain and partial articular surface tear involving the proximal 1 cm common flexor tendon.
2. subcortical degenerative change within the capitellumn suggestive of underlying chondral loss.

He said keep resting it, but I can go to the gym and work other things out as long as it doesnt hurt.

I went to the gym (its next door) and did some exercises and found some things that don't hurt. So I will try that.

Overall, life sux.

I hope I'm not hijacking this thread.

I've got 2 questions:
1. I was told the reason for tendinitis is lack of blood to that area. I've been reading Nitric Oxide helps improve blood flow. Would this help improve/speed up recovery of tendinitis?

2. I went to the gym today and I noticed that when I start my work out I feel my tennis elbow but once I start working out I don't feel it anymore, Why is that?

Trev, any updates for us? I am miserable.

Sorry, nothing good for me, I am sorry, it was a failure in my case.
I have been wearing a band just below my elbow when i can.
Also at the gym I lay my arm down on a bench and with my opposite knee, I apply pressure to the area between my wrist and elbow. This seems to stretch things out inside and give me some relief.
I am going to go back and see Brent, he is physio therapist and he uses Graston Knifes on my arm. He has had some good results with me at times.

Thanks
