ChopsJazz, you can see accident statistics regarding what happens when unsuspecting commuters drive home on the highway, change lanes, talk on the phone, etc. while others on the highway are driving 50 or 80 mph faster than them. Just look at the accident statistics for Germany (post #99 of this tread). The highway death rate in Germany is about half that of the US even though there are grandmothers on the highway tootling along at 70 mph and others drive 150 mph - legally.
Unlike fast driving per se, having bystanders on the side of the street unprotected by guardrails watching cars slide by at the limit of adhesion does increase the death rate. The Mille Miglia races, Group B rallies, etc. were like that. People loved watching them, but so many got killed that they were toned down or banned.
Fast driving and irresponsible driving are not the same.
