Replacing Trunk Lift Struts

TY, I will look for them.

re: your question, The 60 lb. struts I have on my '91 hold the trunk from the midway position up. When it's very cold, say below freezing, they hold from about 2/3 up.

that's good to know. makes me think even more that I had a dud set. i have the OEM wing and it would barely hold it up at full open. I also felt resistance while opening as if the shocks were working against me.

So they did hold it open? You said previously they didn't.

I'm assuming this question is for me. I had them on for about a week but didn't even get to drive the car at that time since it's been raining on and off. I noticed it was pretty much ambient temperature dependent. Here in socal we've been having really weird temps for Dec (40s-50s at night and 60s-70s day) and depending on the temp your shocks will keep the trunk up or come down. These for sure won't hold up anywhere close to the 2/3rds or middle position like some claim and like OEM shocks have no problem doing. So again.. giving you the benefit of the doubt and i'm assuming I got a dud set. This temperature dependency issue is the same problem I have with my current worn out OEM shocks so again, i'm assuming I got a dud set. Regardless, a good set of shocks shouldn't matter what temp it is on the planet earth... they should still work and hold up the trunk if they are a new set. Not to mention the OEM shocks actually assist in lifting the trunk - it's almost effortless.. almost. Yours felt like it was working against me when I tried to open. Again...... i'm assuming it's a dud set.

so... are you doubting me? you want to keep this on PM (which you don't seem to answer) or do you want everyone to hear this drama unfold. been trying to keep it civil this whole time but now i'm getting annoyed at having to explain myself for some silly $50 shocks in which I had to pretty much cut up the OEM plastic wire harness/holder for which i'm not too particularly happy about. Knowing Honda these days that part probably cost more than these shocks.

No I'm not doubting you, just trying to understand your situation. The first message you sent said they did not hold up the trunk, and then you posted here that they did hold it open, but barely. There's no need for drama as far as I'm concerned -- I'm just trying to get the facts.

As for PM's I believe I've answered all of them. Which one(s) did I miss?

Regarding the temps, you are correct. I was in the garage the other night when it was below zero outside (probably 15 degrees in the garage) and I thought it would be a good idea to test the trunk struts to see if they'd hold up in extremely cold weather. They held the trunk up no problem, and these struts have 10 lbs. less compression than the ones I currently sell, so it is entirely possible that you got a bad set or more likely a bad single.

I would appreciate if you can test out the new pair before you send them to me so we're not back here again and the only people happy is the Post Office.

A friend of mine ordered a net of OEM shocks and they work fantastic. If you're assured that they don't work as good as OEM then just process me a refund and i'll go to Honda.

Looks like I had pretty much the same problem with these replacement trunk struts. Bought a pair a few months back. They fit poorly, were larger than the OEM's. Installation required either leaving the OEM plastic wire anchor flapping in the breeze or cutting it off. To top it off, the replacement struts that I received didn't even work as well as my worn out OEM's. Communication with the seller was frustratingly poor; I ended up throwing out the replacement struts and reinstalling my old OEM's.

Yes, the replacement struts have a larger barrel and a different top end fitting. Yes, the wire retainer does need to be be modified to accomodate both of these situations. Yes, the new struts do a much better job than the originals that I replaced.
If you are excessively anal about everything being OEM, these are not a good choice for you. If, on the other hand, you just want to stop getting knocked in the head by a falling trunk lid (my main priority) this is a fine product in my experience. (Just received and installed the struts.)
