Replacing Trunk Lift Struts

Why don't u guys just buy them from Science of Speed?

I'll be getting some of the engine hatch struts in shortly. I think the SOS struts are rated at 84 lbs. and these are rated at 90 so they shouldn't have any problem holding up the window. I believe the price will be about the same as the trunk units, around ~$50 a set. Also, they're satin black so they look more like oem. The only thing I don't like about my SOS stainless struts is that they stick out like a sore thumb. Great quality though.

I actually like how they are silver... I have had many comments on them b/c it looks cool!

At first I hated it, but I know what you mean. They do kinda grow on you.

Still prefer black though.

I used Frank at strutwise. He rebuilt my OEM struts.
original painted studs.
correct gas charge. (too much presure can harm the trunk lid as you close it)
one week turn around time. (I didn't even have to access my trunk during the time the struts were off the car!)
I would use him again if required.

I'd be interested to know what compression he charges them to and how close they are to oem specs. Can't find that info on the web site.

I used Frank at strutwise as well, his price was reasonable shipping was quick and the struts work like new...HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

I actually did email them. Haven't heard back yet.

@xory - I'll be happy to swap those out for you. Just return 'em to the address in your Paypal notice. Still very weird that the trunk would fall so fast like that. Are you able to compress them by hand?

I received the replacement struts the otehr day. I installed them last night and these work prefectly! They were actually a lot more difficult to install for some reason. These were harder to compress and get on the post.

So ... needless to say I am happy! Thank you for the exchange / replacement.

Good product and they saved a me few bucks in the end! Could not aske for anything more.

Thanks NSX Appeal!

Glad they worked out for you xory.

Xory, how is it that you have such a high # for your itrader rating but when u click it, its only 10? lol weird..

haha i think thats the highest # i've seen on this site... you should be a vendor! :)

Lucky guy! I only have two and I had to beg to get those.

I used brand new OEM parts for both the trunk and the engine lid.....

All I can say is, I use my pinky finger to lift them up 3 inches and they spring right up to full extension on their own....Acura parts kick butt.

what causes trunk strut failure (trunk slams/falls shut)?

bad "balls" or bad strut mounts?

Necessary to change the whole assembly or just the balls or struts?

The gas leaks out of the struts over time. My NSX factory originals lasted 12 years, the SLK's lasted 9 years, the 'vette's lasted about 15 years. All different manufacturers, different designs & sizes, but they all eventually leaked down. So, its simply a matter of time.

I don't know the details of the piston construction, but my concern with re-charging old units is my lack of details about degradation of the seals over time.

Wow this thread is still being used continually. I am glad I started this thread back in 2007.

The seals in the strut will go bad over time. The ball and strut mount should last for the life of the car unless it is damaged. The strut and the mount is an integral unit. Some suppliers also include the ball stud as an integral unit. OEM struts do not include the ball stud.

Sorry to hear about your experience. Frank really is the way to go for an inexpensive OEM solution.

I agree. Thanks for the referral. I mailed my struts to Frank at Strutwise. He turned the struts around in a timely manner and now my trunk stays up at the full-open and half-open position. Frank is a reputable business owner. Add me to the list of satisfied customers.

With aloha,
Mike

No prob Mike. BTW, I was born in Honolulu!

Aloha.

Just installed a pair of Cimota trunk struts. The price is great and delivery was quick via paypal. The installation was easy but please note that you will have to modify the the left-side wire clip because the body of the replacement strut is much longer. The clip is no longer available from Acura. Also note that this is the second pair that I have replaced. The last ones lasted about 6 years (So you wonder how long I've owner this car?????? 13years and still goin'!

My mod took about 5 seconds and looks great. (I clipped the unnecessary top piece off with scissors).

You guys on this thread... do your aftermarket struts hold up the trunk in the middle open position like the OEM ones do?

NSX-Appeal - sent you back the bad struts yesterday. I PM'ed you the tracking #.
