my black 92 turbo stolen!!!!

Rob, I'm extremely upset over hearing about this.
I know how much work and time you have put into your car.
I hope the cameras can pick up something, I as well will be on the lookout for your car and or parts pertaining to it.
Hope this all gets resolved soon and your car is still intact.

Too bad :<(((
As for tracking - how many cars would you like to hear about that go DAILY out to sea on container ships and by the time the "search" starts they are already loading and sailing on a ship. The timing is something like in less then 10 hrs you can load, deliver and have your stolen car/bike/etc on a ship sailing and NO, the ship does not stop even if it's know there are stolen goods on board.....gotta wait to get to the other side, then guess who pays the return trip - YOU. Also, unlikley air patrol would be sent for a $40k car (maybe more or less) unless the Drug Guys are involved. I'll let the bike guys know too as they don't like this happening any better then when bikes get stolen.
Hope they recover it in one piece, but definately and INSIDE job...........

Yes, untill they go underground or in a metal continer.

These tracking systems use the Cell networking, so it only good as the Cell network coverage.

Bram

I am the owner and developer of a company that uses Satallite GPS units that I purchase and put into vehicles that allows the owner to track thier vehicle along with anyone else that they provide permission to do so.

I mostly work with trucking companies and courier companies because I didn't think that people would actually pay for such a service. Also newer vehicles already have GPS in them and can be tracked.

These GPS systems can tell if your speeding, they keep a log of your driving habits. I can tell if the vehicle has stopped or not and can set a flag so it tells me if the vehicle stops. I can gather location information in real time or as a trip report.

CRAZY... Sorry for your loss.

I hope you get her back..

Maybe it was some dope doing it for kicks.. Joy ride??
A pro woudn't of taken the risk of taking it while you where there???
Think about it.. He would of went after it while it was parked etc..
I don't know.. just my thought.

Scary. So what you're saying is that people buy lowjack or some other product for security reasons when in reality it actually is a security problem.

Regardless of weather it is a Cell Based or GPS base tracking system, once you go underground or in a Steel continer these system are ineffective.

I"m not sure what you are trying to say?

Bram

Not only is Bram correct, but once it's in a container and on the water you are SOL.........the ships will not turn back and won't even unload the container if they know it's on board and sitting on the Port. You can however obtain your vehicle once you prove it was loaded onto the ship, on the other side and ship it back at YOUR expense. 200 miles out at sea means it falls under Marine Law which it totally different from the laws we know on land..........International Laws prevail........best get it covered under insurance and buy a new one - another reason to have a car appraised and/or deal with a GOOD insurance company who gives full replacement value

This all sucks - but I'd suggest that you don't want your car back anylonger since it's been gone as long as it has.

As Stuart (Red), who deals repossed cars said to me and another NSXCC member - don't put lojack or Boomerang on your car, because if they steal it - you don't want it back.

never said it didnt have tracking, but those are as useless as alarms unless its a joy rider! you can buy jammers from anywhere and they're only a cpl hundred bucks on ebay even! best way to find stuff is eyes and ears open and i have a ton of people on the prowl for me, its only a matter of time before something turns up and i find them or him! car in pieces or not this is personal and im not resting

It is personal!! We are going to find this thief.

My neighbor is a spotter on a EPS Air1. I have gone on a ride along. A very different perspective from the air. 80% of their calls are drug lord related. Sorry, but stolen cars are low on the priority list, unless there was a drug deal involved. If you ever think you can out run a helicopter, they have never lost an attempted runner.

You didn't see the guy on the bike here in vancouver, did you?

RCMP lame o la. How did they lose the biker that crashed with a helicopter and to annoy the public like that using a PA? Come on...invasion of privacy or what?

I'm guessing the 0-100MPH on the bike is better? Maybe the pilot was just caught off guard and by the time he realized what happened it was too late to catch up - the PA announcement was a little pathetic on the part of the pilot -

From what I heard, they found the first bike but not the one that crashed.

Hey another question regarding the prevention of thief on an nsx...do you guys think if there was some sort of tracking device on the car it would help in recovering this nsx?

I was always told that the simple motion sensitive starter kill 2 way alarms are the best. I was also told you can activate a cell phone on a basic plan/pay as you go, put it somewhere inconspicuous and the car can be tracked to the same efficiency as most of the tracking services by law enforcement personnel (can't verify this myself). But the best defense in addition to the above mentioned is to avoid parking in places that are known to be suspect, not well lit, never leaving the car unlocked irrespective of where you are and always arm the alarm and lock the door when the car is not in use and you're away from the car. I don't care if I'm at my aunts house in High Park parked beside an R8 or at my parents house in Unionville, still lock the car. Another good anti-theft measure is the removable steering wheel...lol. I always found them kind of cheesy and never subscribed to it but if you think about it the only way to steel the car at that point is to tow it....and if you have motion sensitive alarm, the thing is going to be blaring while the idiot thieves attempt to throw the car on a trailer/hitch...which will definitely garner the attention of people passing by/in the area.

butter78 these are good tips and very original thinking there. Here are a few more that are low tech and inexpensive.

Avoiding car theft is all about being vigilant, slowing the thief down and/or staying under the radar.

- When your car is not in use don't leave it in your driveway. Instead garage it. Park your daily drivers in front of the garage.
- Renovate your garage to include a floor hook where you can chain the car to when it's in long term storage. Use a car cover.
-Drill holes in the garage door rails so that you can slip a padlock through each side. Hide the keys to the padlocks in a spot where it will be easy for you to remember where they are, but hard for someone else to find.
-Put the car on jack stands and remove the battery when it's stored long term.
-Put your spare keys in a safe that is hidden well away from the car. Don't store your keys in an easy to find place.
-Drive an extra block when returning home to make sure you're not being tailed take four rights.
-Don't store your car in the same location the plate is registered to.
-Have cameras set up in your garage
-Have a motion alarm in your home
-Adopt a Doberman Pinscher
-If you absolutely must park somewhere and leave the car, don't leave the car out of your line of sight.

You Guys are worse then Harley Guys.........if you have to worry that much about your car (yes, it's still just a car) then best sell it and relax a bit. There are organized groups out there specializing in theft and if you think all that one does to prevent a theft is going to work - it won't. If they REALLY want it, it's gone before you even know it. If you have to worry that much IMO, it takes the fun away from driving it, parking it, and owning it.

Dents, scratches, and things (unfortuately theft) will happen to someone we know but be appreciative that the thug who stole it didn't beat the crap out of you or kill you while trying to get it...........

The less you worry about it, the more you will enjoy it!

REALLY? that is a lot of trouble.
How about a good "silver wheels" insurance policy with a current appraisal. Then you can only hope someone steels your car. Typically there isn't even any deductible on stolen cars.

Great suggestions (that I have also used over the years) I would say I wholeheartedly agree with the following (in order of importance and ease of execution):

- When your car is not in use don't leave it in your driveway. Instead garage it. Park your daily drivers in front of the garage.

-If you absolutely must park somewhere and leave the car, don't leave the car out of your line of sight.

-Don't store your car in the same location the plate is registered to.

I'd say the following are not really options that everyone can (or would be willing to) do and are maybe a bit over the top:

-Adopt a Doberman Pinscher

-Have cameras set up in your garage

-Have a motion alarm in your home

-Drive an extra block when returning home to make sure you're not being tailed take four rights.

Security is something I always think of.

Mine's available to be stolen...........insurance will give me lots of $$$....hmm, comes with a few nicks, scrathes, dents from things falling on it so maybe nobody will steal it. HEY WAIT, that's it - just dirty it up, put a few marks on it and nobody will steal it. I knew there was a good reason for having it marked up :tongue:

you need to learn to 'stay under the radar' ....

don't show off, ppl are very jealous and the theives out there have nothing to lose with their lives, so they'll go for it.

Its replaceable, don't worry...

So you use GPS in the car to track the position. How do you relay that information back? Are you use sat-phone technology if not cell based? Is there a reason to use much more expensive sat instead of cell unless coverage is a concern for trucking + courier companies?

I have a logging GPS device that I use in my NSX. Useful for knowing if any shop/dealer I drop the car off is taking it for a joyride. It uses an accelerometer so it only turns on the GPS once it starts moving to conserve battery life. This way if the car is sitting for long time periods of time, the battery in the unit can last a few months.

vehicle within 2 feet. You are correct if the vehicle is in a container it will not be visible to GPS (sat or terrestrial).

What I have is a mainframe system that I purchase sat time from. That mainframe is constantly collecting information based on the interval that the GPS is configured for. It also sends information based on an event such as speeding, stopping, engine off, engine on..., What my system then does is polls the mainframe every time the page is refreshed or again on interval (I automatically refresh pages every minute so you get updates as often as that). The information is passed to my application from the mainframe via XML which is parsed on my end and entered into a database. The page you view is dynamically rendered from the data in the database.

Coverage was always a concern as was the independent cell networks. I wanted a system that was web based so no software to install and no proprietary cell network required. Networks wanted a lot of cash for this type of service. I integrated Google Maps for real-time mapping as well I used sms txt msging as a notification service so you could go on the system and as a driver something, he would get a txt msg with a link. The user would go to that link and they would be connected to a database where messages could be retrieved and responded to with all of that information available to the same application so the dispatcher in this case just sits back and watches things happen in front of them.

This system works off of the battery in the vehicle but also has a lithium battery for backup. If the device is disconnected from the vehicle battery, it immobilizes the vehicle. I was also looking into the ability to send the device sms messages from a cell phone that would immobilize the vehicle as well so you could say roll up windows, set alarm, immobilize car all from a cell phone.

I also looked into triangulation with the GSM/GPRS network as it is capable of this and to a distance of 10 feet. I tested it with a company in Finland but that technology is not available here in North America to Joe Public because of privacy regulations.
