Is the NSX that sensative to cheap gas?

Hi Everyone,
here is my story:
Last week when I went to Costco, I saw a Shell gas station with very cheap price (2.05/Gallon for 91 gas when everywhere is 2.15 and up) I filled up the gas tank and about 5 minutes after I started the engine, the check engine came on. For the next 140 miles, the check engine light came on every time after I drove couple miles after starting the engine. I also fell that the gas mileage is also a little worse than normall. At that time, I doubt that that Shell may be mixing 87 gas into 91. Therefore, I went to another Shell Gas station and filled up the gas tank again. The check engine light was still on after I filled up the gas tank in the first time I start the car. I ran about 5 miles, and I stopped the car for about one hour. By the second time I started the car, the check engine never turn on again and I have drove for about 100 miles already.
I am sure that I always fill up with 91 gas, and I still have the receipt. Do you guys think that there is something wrong with my car, or just the gas?

If it's only having problems when the gas tank is full of gas from one station, then it's likely that the gas is the problem. Keep in mind that it may be a problem with all gas of that brand, or just with gas from the tanks at that particular station.

Also remember that the tank is 18.5 gallons, so you won't get the full effect of another kind of gas just by putting in 6 or 7 gallons (e.g. after driving 140 miles)...

EDIT: Corrected the mistake regarding the place the gas was purchased - My bad! :o

Ken, from the thread it seemed he filled it up with SHELL gas at the gas station which is just around the corner of Costco in South San Francisco. I doubt they mixed the gas over there.

NSXER119,
What color is your NSX?
Do you work or live around there?

Don't ask why I know this, but I've been reading my manual since I just got my car a couple weeks ago, but I read this:

"If you don't tighten the gas cap a full 3 clicks, the check engine light will come on. Then, even if you tighten the gas cap, the light will probably stay on for a few days before it goes off again."

Any chance this is what is causing your problem?

I also read that it's fine to use 87 Octane but you will just get sub-standard performance. But it won't do any harm to the engine.

The previous owner told me that the engine light will come on if I don't tighten the gas cap. So I always make sure the cap is tighten. When the engine light is on, I tighten the cap again, and the engine light still on.
I filled up about 15 gallon in that gas station. Therefore, I believe that the gas cause the problem. Or do you guys think that my gas cap is too old?

I get all my gasoline from the South San Francisco Costco and occasionally at the Shell at the corner of Hickey and El Camino Real and never had a problem in all my NSXs. I doubt the gas is the problem.
You guys are so close. We should have lunch together.

That's interesting. Thanks for pointing this out.

Actually, after I gas up, I only tighten the cap to the point before its first click. I almost always avoid the click. The clicking noise, I thought, was messing up the screw threading so I don't bother. But my check engine light has never come on.

BTW, I only use Shell gas. Chevron (rarely) if there is no Shell in sight.

I think the clicking gas cap is only on newer NSXs. I don't think the gas cap on my '91 clicks at all.

That is quite possible. On my car, the gas cap has small print on it that says "tighten a full 3 clicks"

The gas cap on my 98 has that (or something similar) written on it...

[edit: doh! I had written my post but didn't hit submit until several minutes later... CRAP! Work is getting in the way of my NSXPrime postings! hehaha]
