How do you drive your NSX??

hey addisonrecruiter; if you do a faq search you'll find this has come up before, and there are plenty of nsxers who drive fast--some probably relatively safely and some others probably relatively not.

i myself have been foolish enough to take a corner a little too fast/carelessly and done the mid-engine spin. pretty embarassing and really stupid of me.

you'll find that in general a lot of members here drive well above the speed limits--right or wrong/safe or not.

I personally am always hypervigilant on the road. Ive watched other accidents happen that coulda/woulda been me had i not been so attentive to the other drivers around me. So i dont feel particularly bad when situations allow excessive speed. but that is just me.

ps: a lot of non-posting actually represents quiet acquiescence on this issue ;)

Short and sweet:

Average person on a freeway highway goes 75mph.

You're going ~150mph. (Edit: As noted below, I'm referring to the top speed he quoted. Sorry for not clarifying.)

Speed difference is 75mph.

This is the same thing as driving 75mph on a freeway with parked cars all over the place, except your control is significantly reduced and twitchy.

Every NSX owner should read this. Especially parts 4 and 5 in this case.

A must read.

We are all very fortunate people to be driving these great machines - let's not abuse them, but do have fun indeed !

Thanks

Gee, Aiken, maybe you are reading someone else's post, because addisonrecruiter said that he's usually going 15-20 over the limit. And where I live, most of the traffic goes 15-20 over the limit. Which means that the speed difference is zero.

c'mon guys--if YOU happen to obey all speed limits at all times then more power to you. But many of us do not. The thread reference is a good one; drive safe based up the circumstances, and take all speeding with utmost seriousness.

On a freeway 'my friend' has gone 160mph'. That was probably 'irresponsible' but the circumstances allowed for it; no cars--long straight stretch with visbility unlimited. If you ask the question "is there anyone else around to hurt beside myself", and there is only yourself and your car, let your own moral compass be the guide.

I posted a very similar post as a newbie, and received a much better response from this forum. Some of the posts here seem to hypocritically presume addisonrecruiter's speeding is irresponsible.

So, addisonrecruiter, dont let some of these posts get you down. Of course everyone needs to follow the 'do no harm' policy. Speed accordingly and have fun, 'my friend' does.

I think what happened is that addison was posting under the assumption that his speeding being "responsible" was presupposed, so he omitted that from the original post. And readers (including myself) just got a picture in our heads of an NSX blasting along down a freeway, zipping in and out of traffic. I hope he comes back here and sees my appology for making that assumption.

I don't think that anyone is on a high-horse here, just that they're concerned for his and others' safety.

you know, gee whiz---- our cars are nice. I cant tell you how happy i am that i bought the nsx. nsxprime is one of the most valuable 'appreciators' of our cars. 'Perception' is everything' and this forum only helps to improve the nsx ownership experience. I think this is especially significant and important since, realistically, the nsx is an 'unknown' sleeper in the exotic community. Lets face it; we didnt buy the nsx for the badge--and that is what makes this all the more special.

Lets not run off new posters with assumptions and criticism of what we ALL enjoy doing---driving the nsx fast.

MYNSX hasn't seen this post yet, but if he had, he would say:

"DRIVE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT." -MYNSX

I don't quite get that line. Like if you stole a car you would probably go by the speed limit to not draw attention to yourself and get pulled over... So wouldn't that implies that you drive the car slow (relatively)?

hehe... i don't think that's what MYNSX meant, but i agree with your point. :)

Aiken Drum That 'code of conduct' was originally posted on a Ferrari forum?!?! They obviously never read point #2. :D

I also depends on what other people on the road suspect the other traffic will do. I was in California last summer and I probably have never driven more slowly at all times there then at anytime in my life. Yet it did notice a lot of people just go left or right on the highway without using their signs or without watching, creating almost-accidents because of their behaviour.
By comparison, last weekend I and a friend covered a 750km trip (465 miles) in about 4.5 hours on our way back from Germany. In Germany we were doing between 125-165 mph almost ALL THE TIME and never did we get in any serious situation because of other traffic (which was admittedly light). That is partly I think because drivers there are used to fast traffic.

Oh, what a joy it is to drive in Europe!! Respect for the left lane is almost religious and the proper usage of turn signals is demonstrated over and over. Even in Italy, people respect the left lane and drive with tremendous skill on the highways. I don't know about other states but I agree with you that California leaves a lot to be desired when we look at our poor, almost pathetic driving skills.

Well, it's going to take much more than those responses to get me down. No offense has been taken. Everyone is entitled to their opinions. That is why we live in this great country. I guess it just annoys me that people assume without asking first.

BTW....when I took my car to 149 it was on a fairly clear open stretch of road and as soon as I hit that speed, I was backing off to 70 or 80. I would never drive careless.

1HOTNSX,

I couldn't agree with you more! I've driven in most of western Europe and the standard of driving there is far superior to anything I've ever witnessed in North America. Europeans I've spoken to who've driven in the U.S. are confounded by our lamantably poor driving habits. Nor can they understand why we have such low speed limits given some of our wide open stretches of highway.

But then again, they can't understand the proliferation of trucks/SUV's, our overwhelming preference for automatic transmission, our insistence on traffic lights where roundabouts would be better suited, etc.

Europeans snicker at the way we do many things in this country - can't say I blame them IMHO.

I have had my '91 NSX since early December '02 and I love it. Every time I get behind the wheel I have a big grin on my face. My question is this; how do you drive your NSX?

When I am on the freeways I am almost always hitting 90 to 100 MPH. She purrs at 90. About 149 MPH is my top speed so far, although I want to test her limits. When I am on the city streets I am fairly aggressive in my driving. I like to accelerate quick and hit or get close to 8K RPM on a fairly regular basis. I wouldn't say I weave in and out of traffic, but I like to be in front. I'm almost never going the speed limit, usually 15-20 over. So far no speeding tickets, but got one for running a left turn when the arrow went red.

Is this normal? This is my first NSX and my first true sports car. Will the NSX handle this type of driving on a daily basis? Should I expect higher maintenance costs? BTW, I have completed the 60K service as well as timing belt and water pump.

LIKE I STOLE IT!!

I beg to differ. I don't know how you all drive up north, but from what I've seen around the rest of the country, I prefer Los Angeles drivers to any others. Per capita, there seem to be fewer morons around here than in other parts of the country. Granted, that traffic does get hary certain times of day (especially around downtown) but everyone's pretty much got this traffic thing down.

It often seems like everyone I know, from all over the country, thinks that the worst drivers are either those in his own state, or those in a neighboring state.

My aunt and uncle fall into that category. They said that they, too, prefer Los Angeles traffic to the traffic in Shakopee MN and Minneapolis (sp?). They (my uncle grew up here, my aunt back east) say that in LA, people work together on the road, whereas in Minisota people will rush to get in front of you, and then slow down for no reason at all, or when you put your turn signal on to change lanes, the person behind you in the lane you want will rush up next to you and match your speed (even if you try to speed up or slow down in an attempt to get around them), and for no reason at all, people will box you in (i.e. the person in front is going too slow, and people on the left or right drive right next to you).

That kind of driving just boggles my mind... I am very particular with my students about keeping traffic flowing.

BOTTOM LINE...........I'd prefer to drive side by side w/ a little old NYC/ LA/CHICAGO.OR ANY MAJOR CITY vs's drive near anyone from a little town in w/ a population of 2000 that is now driving in a heavily populated area.

I prefer someone who is used to having lights at the corners
pedestrian auto stop walkways as well as a fair share of defensive driving skill.

The exposure to mass amounts of daily driving for years in traffic converts to exellent experience.

I am aware some drivers (like our southern nascar drivers)are an exeption but I go w/ personal experience as well as the majority ratio.

per capita we have a much higher percentage of accidents in AZ vs's NYC
ps.... half the population is from small towns. :)
THEY SURE ARE MUCH "NICER" BUT THEY ALSO FREQUENTLY RUN LIGHTS AND DO STUPID THINGS LIKE TRY RUNNING FROM THE POLICE ON 3 TV A COUPLE TIMES A MONTH.

THE LAST ONE WAS IN A SEMI.....LIKE AS IF THE HELICOPTER WASN'T GONNA BE ABLE TO FOLLOW.HE COULD HAVE BEEN IN MYNSX AND STILL NOT HAD A CHANCE IN HELL.

JUST MY THOUGHTS LOL :)

I drive no more than 5mph above the posted speed limit. Only problem is, the NSX gets there too quickly! As soon as the light turns green, I find a huge gap between my car and other vehicles in no time, even though I make no special effort to out-accelerate other drivers. :( I do not notice this phenomenon with my other cars..

Sorry to rain on your parade, but this is an important issue, and one that bears emphasizing over and over again. Drive agressively if you must, but responsibly. And most importantly, within your -- and the car's -- limits.
Regards.

Thanks DAD! Why do you automatically assume he's being irresponsible when he's driving. Pretty insulting if you ask me. I drive my NSX agressively too cuz its fun. Get off your high horse.

Sounds just like how I drive mine. I love it! It's disappointing if I can't at least hit 100 MPH, once each morning on the way in to work.

And why was this "probably 'irresponsible'", as you say? Sounds more like an opportunity that had to be taken or turn in your keys.
