GAS 3.34 a gallon!

You need to check your stats. Crude oil has only gone up by 20% in the last year and a half from $40 a barrel to $66 a barrel the other day. The price of refined gasoline is what has doubled in the past year and a half.

You, uh, might wanna check your math.

Except that we're buying the gas that was made from oil purchased a year or more ago for quite a bit less.

Uh...and those VERY SAME PEOPLE are having to pay MORE for futures NOW! Do you think you are entitled to the price they paid???

I love how this works. "This is a FREE COUNTRY," everyone says. Oh, yeah, free for YOU. I get it. YOU should not have to pay for anything.

Pay what the market will bear...don't like it? Don't drive.

But, before anyone brands me unsympathetic, I AGREE. The government KNEW about Peak Oil and did nothing to salve its impact. So, we wil pay the price.

Our "free market" government has allowed idiot consumer demand to drive allocation of capital. So, we got urban sprawl. We have NO mass transit system worth crap. Nothing but a bunch of huge, lumbering, polluting, empty buses that clog up the road. Our system is inefficient because it wasn't planned.

Sure, it will get more efficient in a hurry or die when oil hits $100/bbl. But, our land use, truck fetishes, CAFE, all of it, were complete GARBAGE.

We just let a consumer market decide, based upon what they wanted right now, our national energy policy.

We are half as efficient as the EU, and 1/4 as Japan, in terms of additional energy needed/additional $1M GDP. We're about at the world average, which is atrocious for a country so technically rich. But, we have miles and miles of asphalt and minimansions in the exurbs and everyone just HAD to have an SUX6000 which got 8mpg in the American Tradition.

And, everyone laughed. People who drove Expeditions BRAGGED about how much fuel they wasted. It's like burning $100 bills, pretending to be rich. I have no sympathy for people like this.

Here I am w/ my programmable thermostat and the heat turned down and the A/C turned hot so that I can save energy so my neighbor can lumber down the road with one person in a 4 ton vehicle and while land developers can put up MORE road-congesting traffic lights and strip malls.

GM? They think that this is all "cyclical." We've never seen anything like this, they say, where people dumped gashogs for small, fuel-efficient cars. Right in the Washington Pest yesterday. Inventories are ENORMOUS now on SUVs...like 80 days worth, while Priuses are at 7 days. And, GM is whistling past the graveyard. No small cars, nothing fuel efficient. Oh, this never happened before. Uh...1970 ring any bells, idiots?

Don't hold your breath for a Honda supercar.

This is such a STUPID statement. I pretty much drive to work and back. That's all. I HAVE to drive. There is no alternative. I cannot just stop buying gas. Neither can most people in America. It is not like BEER or GREY GOOOSE. I can live without that no problem. I don't need those products to get to work and back.

Why does the US and Canada not have better alternative fuel infrastructure being built? We will never get off of gasoline until a serious committment is made in North America to do so. Hybrids don't really do a hell of lot to solve the problem.

Well, dude, just CARPOOL or live closer to your office!

Don't like my glib solutions...blame the GOVERNMENT.

NOT oil companies. THEY are not responsible for your decision to purchase a fuel-inefficient vehicle and live far from your place of business.

Also, whose fault is it that you have such poor planning? I mean, you chose to live so far from work that you can't not drive? How far is it? Lemme guess...a minimansion out in the exurbs? Sorry, man. Bad choice. Consume, consume, consume and blame everyone else. You have placed yourself in a precarious position because it never occurred to you that you might not be able to depend upon affordable gasoline?

Acutally I live 5 miles from work, and I have been carpooling for the last year. Guess you are wrong on everything you just said.

Then...uh...WHAT THE HELL is your problem!?!?

You could WALK to work. I cannot be wrong if I base what I say when I read you LYING, man. You said you couldn't NOT drive...that was totally untrue.

You could ride a bike or walk, very easily.

Yes, because walking and riding a bike on the interstate would be really nice.

I would like to see you walk 5 miles to work in 100 degree heat with 90% humidity.

Think for a moment what was the fuel source for the very first engines during the Industrial Era in the United States. That would be fossil fuels, also known as hydrocarbons. This would include coal, natural gas, gasoline, kerosene and crude oil. The mindset for the world for the next two-hundred years was to power machines with hydrocarbons. In the early 80's alternative fuels were investigated; however, they did not become developed to the extent that hydrocarbon fuels are today.

Regarding your comment about it not being practical to bike to work.....that is fatally flawed logic. Our Summers are just as bad as yours and I once worked with a guy that biked to and from work every day, ten miles in each direction…..on the feeder of I-10, no less. Yes were we worked had a shower facility so that helps, obviously. The fact that he was a health nut who could easily bench press 315 pounds (not kilograms) was also in his favor. Like you, he is a big (not fat) and strong man.

So if you really really really want to save gasoline money and if your work has a shower, buy a bike. Otherwise you are just whining about high gasoline prices, which by the way, you never answered my question of how you would control prices of.

I have no idea. I don't have the knowledge or resources to have a good answer for you.... and even if I did, you would disagree with it anyway.

why would you use an "interstate" to go 5miles?

Because of where I live and where my work is, it is 12-15 miles if you do not go on the interstate.

Re: How Ironic

lol best quote ever!

That is true for NSX owners, but for a large part of the country that $6 or $7 dollars a tank is not so easy for them.

And the irony here is that the very first post in this thread complaining about gasoline prices is from.............an NSX owner.

I found this amusing...

From Izuzu's website on the new i350 truck(exactly the same as the Canyon/Colorado from GM).
Quote
"i-350 Crew Cab comes equipped with a powerful, efficient Vortec™ 3500 engine. Not only does this 3.5-liter Inline-5 engine produce 6-cylinder-type outputs - 220-hp and 225 lb-ft of torque that'll come in handy on the next steep grade - it also produces the type of fuel efficiency that comes as a big relief at the pump ".

OK now the best part.
Get to the specification page and this is what you see:
Fuel economy -city - 17mpg

Ha!

Do you remember the "Joe Izuzu" commercials. He said the Izuzu pick gets such good gas milage that you have to stop every 50 miles and take gas out of the tank. LOL

What is really questionable is Toyota stopping the production of the ECHO which got like 47mpg on the highway.....seems they want less competition for the Prius.

The Echo wasn't selling well. The Prius is a nicer looking car. Echoes look like crap, like Europeans drive.

We'll all be in one soon enough. Enjoy your wasteful NSX while you still can. When the price of everything doubles, cost of operation of cars like this are luxuries that get dumped overboard.

<<The good ole land of freedom is not what it seems. These hurricanes were a blessing for the oil men. >>

Oh yeah, the "oil men." But, not you, right, because you don't own any XOM stock? What most makes me laugh is all the stockholders of "oil men" companies bitching about oil prices.

This is the FREE MARKET at work here. If you don't like it, don't drive. Ride your bike. Don't speed around in an expensive exotic sports car.

BTW, when 25% of US refinery capacity is off-line or threatened by a major hurricane, there are going to be gas supply interruptions. Oil has doubled in the last year or so...gas has finally caught up.

Lift- Dude? Have you been paying attention?

NetViper said:
Well, someone obviously owns stock in oil. You are the only one happy about this.

Actually- Liftshard is right in his assertion- everything he said about supply line disruption is absolutely correct.

Refineries brought their equipment down hard in anticipation of major damage from Rita- bringing down the equipment "hard" has consequences- Even though the storm wasn't Katrina magnitude the refineries are still mechanically damaged and will need time to get back up to production.

There were premonitions about this subject in THIS thread before Rita even hit. As you can tell from my posts- I am not shocked that this has happened. I expected it.

As for the behaviors of independant retailers (the whole station that closes when prices go over $3.00 bit) No explanation- but if there is crookery going on, at least you have someone you can trust- unless he is closed... :frown:

Hold tight- there might be a few more weeks of this.

I take issue with that. Coming from a country that traditionally produces the most ugly cars I don't think it is a fair comment.

Aston Martin AMV8 or Vette Z06...I wonder....

Just because your NSX has a badge that begins with A deosn't make it American!

For what it's worth too I'm paying $8.65 a gallon and just going out less!

These people are criminals!!!!!!!

We have gas at $3.34 a gallon today! That does not include the 15 cent gas tax that our Georgia governor suspended for september. WTF!!! Come Saturday, it will be $3.49!!!! Savannah is not even effected by the damaged pipelines from Katrina! Gas was $2.89 yesterday!!! CRIMINALS!

This country is heading for a recession BIG TIME if something isn't done.

This thread has surely taken a different direction. The original point was that gas prices increased by up to 45 cents overnite in some GA cities, yet elsewhere in the country prices have been somewhat stable or going down. I did not see it as a complaint about high prices (we are all paying higher prices) but more so why such steep overnite increases throughout Georgia.

BTW - I moved 50 miles away from work so I can save at least $100K on a house along with a $10k/yr savings on taxes. So far well worth the extra $1500 or so I spend on gas - less when carpooling...

I am also driving my NSX to NSXPO05 starting out early tomorrow morning. By the time we get 1/2 way through PA we will be a three car caravan that started as far east as CT... I plan to simply close my eyes at each gas stop :)
