Engine whine problem

So I noticed a whine coming from the right side of the engine near the wheel. It gets higher pitched as the RPM's go up like a cat meowing, and is loudest at idle. I spoke with Larry B and he said it's most likely a pulley bearing guiding the A/C belt. Anyone know how hard that is to repair? He said to cut it, but I'd rather remove the belt and inspect that pulley bearing t confirm that's the problem. If it is, I'll replace it. I haven't even looked at it yet. Just figured I'd ask before jumping into it.

Thanks.

Dan,

Its easy to remove the AC belt and/or the idler pulley. I've done it as part of the TB replacement. When the snow clears, stop by. :-)

In an old posting it was noted that NTN part number 6203LLBC3/2AS is an $8 bearing that fits - a great deal compared to $80 for a new idler pulley assembly.

Hey Frank,
I was gonna give you a call but I didn't want to bother you over the holidays.

The car is making a lot of noise, so I'd rather not drive it. I have a better idea... you come down here! I have lifts now and we can do the work here no prob if you're up for it!

Good to hear from you.

I had a whine when I was out at the track and it sounded like I have a supercharger, but I don't. So I decided to pack up and head home. I noticed on the drive home the volt gauge dropped down to zero and back up every once in a while. It was the bearings in the alternator.

I'll check that too when I pull the belts off. Thanks.

Was your wife\gf in the car ???? lol

I will never dog the GF again, because she drove 2-1/2 hrs each way to the track to bring me a new rotor from the garage when I cracked it this year.

Nah-I love my wife dearly and she bought me an 05' this year for Christmas.

But I just couldn't resist, it was to tempting lol

Dan,

I forgot which town you live in. PM me with that and your phone number (I misplaced it) so we can discuss what tools you do/don't have. We'll arrange something, but I'm pretty busy for the next 3 days. But by then the roads will be cleared.

I think my NSX have the same problem too. How to replace the bearings in the alternator? Can they be ordered separately or do I have to replace the alternator?

Just a thought...Was the A/C on?

My A/C makes a slight wine when on, after I converted it to the newer type of coolant.

LB knows his stuff, I would go with whatever he suggests. He has never steered me wrong:smile:

Mine does the same thing, figured it was the compressor bearing. If yours didn't make the noise before the coolant conversion, maybe that's all that is wrong with mine because mine's been converted too . Hope that's it!

Hi Chuck,

The description sounded like it was a bad whine, like either the A/C compressor siezed, or the idler pulley siezed. If this is the case, the belt is bad anyway, so I suggested to just cut the belt off. If Frank gets together with Dan, all the better:).

Regards,
LarryB

Hi Larry! Yes, it sounds like a whine... like I have a supercharger. It all happened kind of suddenly, but it started off "not so loud" and it got louder and louder as I drove home. If the belt is shot from it, then I'll cut it off for sure. I just had all new belts put on a few thousand miles ago so I didn't want to ruin a new belt... didn't know it was probably shot from this though.

Frank said he'll probably be stopping by within a week or so. No rush since we're in an ice age anyway. Will update everyone when I dig into this more. Thanks for all the help!

Ok, so I pulled the alt belt off, started the car and it still whined. So I pulled the idler pulley off and it does seem a bit gritty when I spin it. So, where can I get this replacement bearing and belt? I just had all the belts done within the past few thousand miles... gggrrrr........

That's probably why the bearing went out. People tend to overtighten the belts which causes excess stress on the pulleys and bearings. You should always check to make sure the belts aren't overly tight when they're replaced by someone else. Yes, I learned the hard way on this :frown:.

Well, the Acura dealer did it when they did my timing belt!

It's a good thing the TB's have tensioners or you'd see a lot more waterpump replacements too. Replacing the bearing in the pulley is very easy. Take the pulley to a good auto part store and they'll be able to match the bearing. Just knock it out and gently hammer the new one in (the bearing should have one side covered by a flat seal - that side should face to the outside).

Nah, I think I'll just use my hydraulic press.... ;)

Oh, and both sides seem to have that flat rubberish seal. Looks like a motorcycle wheel bearing to me.

I had that 'whine', turned out to be the alternator. Had it rebuilt, whine gone.

I thought it might be that, but I pulled the alt belt off and the whine was still there. I guess its possible it could be both, but let's just start with the bearing... :)

So the book says to tighten the AC belt from 7-9 mm/10 kg if its a new belt...and its a new belt. What does "mm/10 kg" mean?
