E85 Fuel

Like everything in life: It depends on persistance, knowledge and the thickness of your wallet.

If you are into some custom ECU coding and rebuilding your delivery system: sure.

Too bad they don't make off the shelf conversion kits. The energy of E85 is about 70% of gasoline...so FI would be probably be in order too.

I even had trouble on a blend of 15% Ethanol/85% gasoline. Tried a tankful once and not long after, the check engine light came on. Filled up with regular gas and light went out soon after and haven't had a problem since.

I'll agree with Briank that E85 is "feel good"...at least right now.

However, you have to build the market for alternatives, and it will only beat the competition when the infrastructure is in place and one can take advantage of the economy of scale.

Currently it is much cheaper to move a barrel of oil from the Arabian Gulf to Los Angeles, than it is to move a gallon of alcohol from the Midwest to Los Angeles. This needs to change and it will only change when people start demanding E85 in mass quantities.

So, if you want to start moving the ship in a different direction: it takes time and effort. AND people with vision.

/our dependence on oil makes the US do some very stupid things in the world. Making the world a better right now place involves making oil a worthless commodity.
//prediction: Iran is gearing up to take a big chunk of Iraq when we leave. Nobody is going to go in to stop them either. Sanctions are worthless.

Tried a tankful once and not long after, the check engine light came on.

That was probably because the O2 sensors were seeing too much O2 (thinks the engine is running lean if you were using gasoline). Probably nothing to be worried about.

Sure, it would be possible to make modifications to the NSX to use E85 (but you would have to do the design and engineering of those modifications yourself). Just like the manufacturers have designed and installed modifications to special versions of their cars to be able to use E85 in them. I assumed the question was about whether the NSX, in its stock or commonly modified forms, could use E85 without risk. In which case, the answer is no.

Here in Australia, Shell have released a fuel called "Optimax Extreme" which is 100 RON and is also 5% Ethanol. The previous highest octane was Shell "Optimax" and BP "Ultimate" which were 98 RON.

So this 100 RON is currently the highest octane unleaded available except for pure racing fuels like ELF etc and contains 5% Ethanol!

Everyone knows that Ethanol is not as volatile and hence reduces the octane of petrol. So my guess is that Shell have decided to showcase this fuel to try and dispel the current thinking that Ethanol is not good for your car...

That's similar to here, where (in much of the country) most brands have 93 octane but Sunoco has 94.

Remember, our pumps are labeled with the "anti-knock index" so your 98 RON fuel would be labeled as 93 octane in the States.

Yes that is why I specified the RON number as I wasn't sure what the equivalent was in the states.

But the thing that I would really like to know is what would be the RON of the 100 RON "Optimax Extreme" WITHOUT the 5% ethanol???... I'm thinking 102-104 RON (Remembering that it must be 100 RON minimum for them to claim 100 RON)

So why don't they sell us that? 102RON vs 98RON (hypothetically) could make a noticable difference in hp when combined with tuning especially with FI...
