Do you think carbon fiber is played out?

Are you making fun of my C.F. NSX-R rear wing? If it's outdated, I guess I should sell her.

I guess it's somewhat functional.

I dunno man but I must say that couch must be one of the fastest couches on the block with the most downforce too! lol

I think the spoiler looks awesome - but IMO I would smoke tint it so the weave is not as visible .... if I ever got any CF like a hood or trunk lid, it would be painted.

I have to agree with others that Carbon Fibre goodies (consoles, shift knobs, wings) are played out as you see them or copies on everything from Civics to Kia Sorrento SUV's...

I had to replace my center console to add in a double-din stereo and could have bought a carbon fibre one but instead decided to keep it real and stock.

I believe carbon fibre is here to stay in terms of car construction for body panels etc...

Are those real CF parts in these civics and Kia's or fake CF? If its fake I wouldn't say its "played out" but I would say its pretty lame.

Anyway if CF interior bits are really making their way into Kias and civics (I dont know cause I haven't looked in any recently) then I think a strong argument could be made that CF interior bits are "played out".

But I still think CF looks appropriate (played out or not) on cars made for the race track.....i.e. NSX,

I like it. I also have a Formula Red and I dont have any CF parts on it now but I am looking to add a CF wing.

As for the CF lic plate.........eh...I could do without that.

Yay, word bro! I have not read any of the other replys but to me it was played years ago. looks so rice, when I was in Japan last everyone was giving it the heave ho and selling it to the clueless on flea bay japan. hows that n20 thing working for you.

best regards david
ps dude call me, I have that tune info for your car

Having playing with the thought of cf some parts on my car in the past I've ruled it out.

Optically, it's played out but technically it has a much longer breath.

Do you think carbon fiber is played out?

Oh no. In case you want to display your affinity for performance on your 5751 lb Escalade I say go for it:

I ask because I see alot of people doing the carbon fiber thing and whenever alot of people do something I like to go a different route....

Since spending 150 grand on body work is likely out of the question... there is always just primering the hood black so it just looks like carbon fiber... who's been there?

Just wondering how other feel about it

99% of the tuner aero/carbon parts ultimately being discussed aren't functional designs. Most are hand laid fiberglass, with a top layer of carbon cloth and some clear. The frame design is often identical to stock. They have no apparent structual, nor significant weight saving benefit over and above an equivalent quality process using fiberglass. Hence, the exposed layer is just for show.

Of course, the ignorance to material science doesn't climax until, along with "JDM titanium exhausts" with 14 feet of piping... the owners install said goodies on fully laden street cars under the guise of "weight savings" ... you know, like installing the hood yet leaving the steel latches and washer in.

If its done tastefully, such as interior accents, steering wheel, and little stuff, it will never be played out.
.

What's most lame is wrapping stock interior pieces with faux decals. Popular with the street posers and often included in "mod lists". Frankly, with the exception of the brembo slip on covers and tornado fuel saver... I doubt you can get any more childish and ghetto than that.

Of course, I'll withhold judgment. Every year some new boy fad finds its way past customs.

Just like a wood interior it still looks classy and luxurious.
.

Gag.

When you go into full hoods, fenders, mirrors on rice rockets, then yes.

Hmm. But what if we gave it a 5" lip? Wouldn't that be classic phat?

I'll match you one. So here's my new story I like to tell.

Some of the 350Z will "upgrade" and swap out their stock rear hatch for a carbon fiber one from CWEST.... you know, to save like 35lbs on their 3400 lb + plush cruiser, and get that lower CG I guess. Right. Whatever.

Unfortunately, the problem is that it is now too light to close properly given the valving on the stock trunk struts. Apparently people were whining like little babies (common on those boards) that it was now opening too fast for them and/or rattling! Hmm.

So what you need to know is that stock the Z comes with a 5lb lead weight bolted to the underside of the factory trunk lid, which the dealers are supposed to remove if they install the optional heavy NISMO ricer spoiler ...

So, the solution they came up with was just to go ahead and re-attach the stock 5 lb lead weight to their carbon fiber trunk lids to alleviate that customer problem.

hahahahaha.... that's a classic ricer story.

I just removed a lot of the CF items from my car this weekend. Have one or two more pieces to gone to get it back to as stock as possbile before trying to sell it.
Hopefully those that want those types of items will be some customers in the near future.

But technically, this a functional necklace. If a driver wore say a platinum necklace instead of this, then they would technically be heavier and weigh the car down. That extra 2 grams may help them win a 24 hour race.

So my question is, when is it actually "function" and when is it for looks? If the parts are replacing parts that are heavier, even if it is on a Civic, then that is for function.
