I want to purchase a compressor and power tools to work on my cars. (Mostly my NSX!) I have seen several types, with different max PSI and different volume canisters. Can anyone suggest a good model or tell me what specs I should be looking for?

Thanks,

Nate in DC

Even the small ones are fairly loud, so they get pretty annoying if they're turning on everytime you pull a trigger and you're standing right there. Larger tanks last longer between filling and larger motors fill the tank faster. What tools will you be using? If just periodic impact hammer or nail gun the tool's performance won't be affected even if you go with a smaller compressor, but if you'll be using it for years consider going for bigger, at least on the tank. Few tools can use more than 90psi and most tanked compressors on the market are at least 125psi. If you'll be using drills, sanders, spray guns and blow guns (any continuous-drain tool) then you'll need to go big anyway. Look at the tools you'll be using and check their air requirements, measured in CFM @ psi. Then check the compressor's rating. Usually they'll give at least a couple CFM ratings, like 15CFM @ 40psi or 10CFM @ 90psi.

For a permanent install, get as big a tank as you can fit into the space. Small tanks cause the compressor motor to run constantly to keep up. It's not only PSI you look at but CFM delivery too. Air power tools take a lot of air. 2 HP 220V should be minimum.

I have a large Ingersoll Rand(bought directly from IR) and its been great to me for over five years. It's a little quieter then some others I've heard. But in general, Home Depot is probably your best bet for everything you need. They have IR and all their Husky brand stuff is very nice, and durable.
