Cars are boring

The only problem with that is Porsche's pricing policies. If the boys in Stuttgart dropped in a motor better suited to that great chassis, the MSRP would absolutely skyrocket.
Their (other) pricing problems also cause trouble when trying to compare P-cars with other cars. Maybe they've changed, but the last time I looked at P-car prices it was obvious they can increase significantly over base with the addition of options (wheras Acura had very few "options" that weren't standard with the NSX during the same years).

True, a base Cayman S can jump $10k in a heartbeat. As to the GT3 engine they would most likely kill you on that option. The X51 option on the 996 was on the order of $10-12 K for a 25hp bump. Steep!

I just looked at the SOS site and it looks like a 3.8 could be had for about $15K. I believe that combo would put a 3.0 NSX into the 350 crank hp range. Not a bad number if you are into your current car at a good price. I'm not sure what that would do to the resale value. If it's like a modified Porsche you'd have to wait till you found the right person to recoup half of the investment. But in the meantime you’d have a lot of fun.

I am selling my 91 NSX (sadly) and getting a 2000-2001 996 - mainly because the back seats for the kids. When I drove the 911, it definitely felt faster due to the extra torque it has over the NSX - I have been debating for the last six months on getting an M5 or S4 - but they are both heavy and will never give me the same feeling I had when driving the 911 - I never liked 911s before mainly because of the look - but when I drove one, I became a believer - they are incredible cars

What happens when those kids creep past age 3, and those "seats" become worthless? By the way, does the whole 911 line(turbo, GT2/3) include back seats?

I believe all have back seats except the GT2 & the GT3

The seats are good up to the age of 10 based on examples that I have seen with others (I guess depending on how tall they get)

Yeah, I guess age 3 was a bit pessimistic. I remember being around 7ish and riding in the back of one of my uncle's 912s? It was a little tight, but not too.

NSX7, if you can swing a 2002 or newer it is worth the extra price. There were a lot of changes for the 2002 model. The car feels a lot better. Of course there are those that like the 99 better due to the weight savings and not having the drive by wire throttle.

Having had both the 99 and 02 models I'd prefer the 91 NSX to the 99 996. If you need those seats then the 996 is the choice. you mentioned the M5, have you considered the M3? An E36 M3 is a good car which can be made even better with a few suspension tweaks.

Good luck with your hunt.

I agree with Alan. I would go for a 2002 996 or a M3 over a 1999 - 2000 996.

IMHO - All porsche's are way overpriced when new. However, they are a great deal when slightly used. So, IF I buy one - its going to be a year or 2 old. Look at the 996 GT3's - List 115k - 120k, now $75k. Another example is the 2002- 2003 996TT - new 130-140k, used $70-78k. Heck, Look at the almightly Carrera GT - MSRP $449k, used with 3k miles for $350k.

I personally think the Carrera GT was designed after the NSX. Take a close look at the lines. Picture the NSX without the glass hatch. Even the interior is somewhat similar! Take a look at the rear wing - look familiar? Shows you how ahead of it's time the NSX really is.

I completely agree - the 02 996 was the better car when I drove it - but it's about $7-10K more - and regarding the M3, I had an 01 E46 M3 and I sold it after 6 months - the power was amzing, but the car felt heavy, gearbox was garbage, and the suspension was way way too punishing for my wife and kids - for me I kept thinking about my 91 NSX every time I drove the M3 !!!!!!!!! - I am hoping the 911 will make me forget the NSX (for a while)

I think you'll like the 911. If the handling doesn't feel quite like the NSX you can always add the European sport suspension package, X74. I had it on my 02 and it was good enough to get the track record with NASA at Putnam.

Here's an excerpt from a member on Renntech regarding the X74 package:

In a German magazine they had a comparison of a C2 with stock suspension vs. 030 vs. X74 on the track (Hockenheim) and on a 36m (100ft) Slalom:

Hockenheim:
1:16.9 min stock
1:16.2 min 030
1:15.7 min X74

Speed Slalom:
123.0 km/h stock
126.1 km/h 030
127.2 km/h X74

Yeah, those darn lazy germans and their inability to create their own good looking car.

DDankew,

Thanks for the humor!
