Cars are boring

It takes about 20 or 30 minutes to do yourself and it's easy enough that a 10 year old can do it. Why wait for hours at a dealership of all places? Shit, call me the next time and if you bring lunch I'll do it for you and you can enjoy a nice drive up to Boca.

Cool, make a Boca day outta it. I could do that, but not in my Elise.

I don't know guys. While I love the NSX and have owned 3, there has never been a better time to be a car lover.

You've got affordable pure toys like S2k, Evo, STi, even muscle like the Mustang. Then there's the less pure but still sporty Solstice and Saturn, Miata. Then you have a little higher cost yet pure toys like Elise, new Z06, New M Coupe and Roadster, Cayman, Viper, C55 and SLK55 under 100k. The new XK8 is sweet also. Then there's the high end - 911 GT3, Aston AMV8, GT40 and others.

Would I take one of these over my 98 NSX for the same price my NSX was NEW? Of course! I would take a new Z06 for $75k over $90k on my NSX. I don't think I would buy an 05 NSX for this reason. I would just buy a 97-2002.

BUT for the same $45k or so my car is worth, I don't see a worthy replacement except for maybe an Elise (just for a change) or and 911 Turbo 3.6 like the one from Bad Boys.

Congrats on being a veteran. A lot of guys dream of 3 but you've been there.

YES, of course there are a handful of somewhat unique, fairly exciting cars that are relatively affordable. Is an S2000 nice, and a blast to drive? Sure. A 911? Of course. A TL? Well, no - I draw the line there my friend. My point is that 8 months ago, I didn't drive an NSX almost daily. And 8 months ago, while I didn't consider these other cars (including the luxury sport sedans I mentioned), I wasn't turned off by them either. I could look at a parking lot, spot the nicer cars, and admire them for their purposes. Now, I look at the same parking lot, and they all look the same and I couldn't care less.

Best analogy - the NSX has turned me into thinking like a chick. All cars look the same and I don't really care about any of 'em. Except Alicia.

Maintenance costs were the number one reason that stirred me against purchasing a sports car. But then again there was depreciation.

That pretty much limited me to only a used NSX. I was able to purchase one at the price and spec I wanted after waiting for the opportunity for years.

By coupling it with an economical gas saving car, I went ahead with the decision to purchase one after wanting one since it came out back in the 90's in Thailand.

How low the car sits to the floor.........it really is the best bang for the buck if you ask me.

That is why I understand many of the people here on the board don't hesitate to put a lot of money into their cars........is there really anything else you would rather jump into even if you had additional funds........the answer for me remains a "NO."

Although Ferraris are nice, the reality of it is that they break, although the newer ones are all gearing to be better built and last.

Who knows maybe one day I could afford one and at the same time justify to myself in purchasing one.

Japanese cars have really come a long way.....and they are expected to overtake the truck and SUV segment as well.

Cheers.

I disagree - I think this is another "golden age" for cars, with a new horsepower war going on and an unbelievable selection of designs for every taste. I remember not too long when a Mustang GT with 215 hp was a fast and powerful muscle car - now every family sedan has more juice than that.

Some designs are better than others, no doubt, but I could list probably 15 cars I'd like to own right now. Bump up the price ceiling and I could expand my list a bunch. Still - you can buy a lot of car for under $50k these days, even under $40k. And the technology is out of this world, and it gets cheaper every year.

All I know is that when Alicia is waiting patiently for me in a parking lot, probably hidden between two SUVs, I get "The Feeling" when I return from my temporary abandonment of 'er. Usually goes something like this:

(walking towards the NSX with a bag of groceries in one hand)

50 feet: start fumbling for my keys
30 feet: key FOB "doors unlock" -- Alicia winks her taillights at me, the heart starts to pump
20 feet: In a daze, almost get run over by granny's caddy. Beware of NSX tunnel vision!
10 feet: quick glanceover for door dings
1 foot: reach for the door handle...

**Hot damn!!! This is gonna be fun!**

0 feet: Mount Alicia, insert keys, crank, listen to her pur...speed away with ice cream melting in the trunk!

There's not a car on the planet that would have the same effect, every single day, as this. So, yeah, other cars are boring in comparison.

LOL... best thread in a while! Funny & true with one exception -- i think the TSX (Accord Euro) is very stylish. They turn my head whenever i see them... but of course, they're no NSX. ;)

Seriously, an NSX is art. Everything else is just transportation.

This should be added the NSX Prime FAQ.

Got to agree with Ski Banker, most cars are boring (except for the price tags....they are annoying). Personally, if the car has a back seat, I don't care how nice it is.....it's going to make me yawn. Cars with back seats are strickly for transportation (unless you're a teenager:wink: )

Maybe hop into an 07 997S or turbo. Either one of which will spank an NSX. Too bad Honda let the NSX sit stagnant for so long. Still a nice car, I like mine.

I did test drive a 996 (or 997, can't remember) before I got the NSX. Very different feeling car with lots of torque. No doubt they are nice and probably perform a little better than an 05 NSX. But I still didn't get "the feeling" like I put so eloquently above: **Hot Damn! This is gonna be fun!** Plus, I love the Targa top option on NSXs. And that fact that it is a piece of automotive history. And...

The new R8 though...(salivating...)

You're right. It was a great piece of engineering in 91. Looks and handling are hard to fault. Just think of how nice a Honda engineered super charged NSX would have been.

Why salivate over the R8. Is it not just a cheaper slower Gallardo?

Performance wise - I guess you could look at it that way. But what the Gallardo lacks, IMO:

1. Exotic but understated. You can drive an R8 to work, around town, etc. without necessarily being accosted by lurkers & gawkers from 4 counties away. (So FL, LA being the exceptions I know). Try that in a Lambo. Same effect as the $150k+ AMG Mercedes that can fly under the radar.

2. Audi dealership/service convenience. Even IF (may be a big IF) the Gallardo was daily driveable - capable of 100k trouble free miles - you would still be at the mercy of the local Lambo dealer "near you" for basic services. Like with my NSX -- I have 5 Acura dealerships relatively nearby, and if one of them puts the screw on -- I have 4 alternatives. Rick Case Acura is great BTW  Ferrari, Lambo -- 2.

3. I guess point #1 really sums it up. I love Gallardos and F430s. But I just wouldn't want to daily drive one, regardless of the maintenance. It's why I like 550 Maranellos (silver) for the same purpose. They're bad motor scooters, but without constant attention and worries 24/7 like an F430.

I just bought a black 1991 48k miles with all new $25k in mods last week including ctsc, hd/exh, brembo, bilstiens, I also have a 1993 red w/20k miles stock that I will be selling soon. This is my 3rd NSX.

When I did not think I could love a car more... wow this car is amazing, I get excited to leave for work or run any errand just to drive it. I walked out of the Lexus dealership today looking at my 16 year old car which is way more cool. You can get a Z06 but in 5 years it will be an old Corvette but an old NSX will always have more class.

I love to park far out in the parking lot and and when I come back to it it makes me laugh that that is mine!

I have owned my NSX for 4 years and thought about getting something "faster", "better". I have a bunch of friends who own multiple porsches. They swear by them. I am not much of a porsche guy but I thought I would go test drive one. I drove a 997S couple of wknds ago. MSRP -$93k. The was nice, but nothing special. The looks are so-so, nothing special. It looks alot better with the Aero package but that's $100k+. You sit up high - I felt I was in a VW GTI. I didn't like the shifter. The interior feels clastrophobic. The redline is 7k, I kept hitting it wishing I was in my NSX. The noise was muted compared to the NSX. The engine sounded like it was a bit farther away(which it is). It definetly has a bit more mid RPM grunt then our NSX. However, I was expecting more. With all the magazines worshipping the 911, I thought it was going to be more spectacular.

After the testdrive, I felt I just drove a luxury GT coupe, not an all out sports car. IMHO, the 997s is better DD but that's about it. I guess I will be keeping my NSX a bit longer.

Ski Banker has it down to a tee...the NSx is a sin to drive and own!! The only cars out there that turn my attention away from my NSX (for a moment) are some Ferraris and all McClarens and Lamborghinis - oh yea...the odd late 50s and early 60s carwill get my attention...but in terms of new vehicles... lol...nothing compares...or even interests me! I am always amazed at the fact that I am so fortunate (and smart) to own one of the most amazing cars ever produced...

So ends my sermon...

Sorry but that 997S will walk away from the NSX on the track. I like my NSX but it is not as quick as my 02 996. I agree on the looks. It is great looking car and the design will last a long time. Before I put my car up for the winter I was at a car wash drying my car off next to a 996 turbo. People walked past the turbo to comment on how great the NSX looked. Even the turbo owner came over to compliment me on the looks of the NSX.

It's too bad the volume wasn't there for Honda to continue seriously developing the car.
