I just read an article in Evo magazine website ( www.evo.co.uk ) that the new Caterham RST V8 has TWO openclass (1 liter inline 4) motorcycle engines, joined together at the crank shaft(?) , similar in concept to VW's W style engines. This Engine can rev to > 10000 rpms and easily has 340 hp.

Now we know it can be done, so why isn't honda making one for NSX??
I'm just curious.
Honda is also a BIG motorcycle manufacturer, with the new CBR 1000RR producing roughly 170hp at the crank. 2 of them would equal 340, right??

Assuming the torque issue can be solved with greater displacement, is it too stupid of me to think that small displacement high output Engine from honda for next NSX is at all possible??
it's certainly technically doable.

I just hope the next NSX is just as beautiful and screaming product as the current one.

Well with your formula, than we should have 3 CBR1000 engine to make 3.0 liter for the NSX, 170*3=510HP.

Now that would be nice.

1. Would a cobbled-together engine such as this meet Honda's goals for reliability?

2. How many RST V8's do you think Caterham sells in a year?

That should answer your question.

Honda needs a high performance automobile that can be sold in reasonable numbers at a profit. Those attributes may prevent it (Honda) from producing something similar to the current design.

I've often wondered why they didn't just stick two S2000 engines together for an upcoming NSX. 4.0L V8 with at least 480hp. But then again, I have fantasies of Honda stuffing one of their detuned F1 engines in the upcoming NSX (if there ever is one), so my expectations for the next Honda supercar is pretty high :p
