"large" wheels back then were 16". Over the past decade, wheels have gotten bigger and more importantly, tire profiles have shrunk. 50 series tires were the lowest profile available in the early 90's. Also, for mid-engine cars like the NSX, Esprit, Lambos, the front wheel wells usually get in the way of the driver pedals. Acura decided to go with the smaller front wheel (15" fronts vs 16" rears) so that the pedals could be placed in front and not to the right. Just imagine the clutch pedal being where your brake pedal is.
