17/17 and 17/18 Tire Choices - not much left.

235/40r17 & 275/35r18 ... will the TCS mind on the way to the track?

Those sizes have a 4.8% increase in diameter for the rear, which should work for all years' TCS. The OEM stagger is (91-93: 7.75%; 94-01: 4.65%; 02-05: 5.3%), so 4.8% is within a few percent of each. At least that's my understanding.

This list really needed to be updated. It may not be 100% correct so feel free to copy, edit, and re-post it. Unfortunately I can't edit the OP.

Red means its no longer available, there were a few others that I just deleted instead of highlighting in red. These are vaguely in order of performance:

Tire Rack still has the Yokohama ADVAN Neova AD08 (as well as the AD08R) in 215/40-17 and 265/35-18. Does anyone have experience with both?

what do you know... a new tire for the NSX

what do you know... a new tire for the NSX

that is good news, and this looks like a good tire. i'm getting 17/18 volk wheels, and very much hoping decent tires will continue to be available for them.

Only if you like 18" 255 in the rear. Some people love their 265+ rears which this sadly does not come in.

I personally don't think it makes a hill of beans difference. You want more grip get a different tire... 255/265 is not that different. You could almost argue the extra weight difference give you as much as an extra 3 square mm of possible contact patch (you aren't getting 10mm of width on that patch). 255 is also a closer OEM ratio for the TCS.

I happen to agree. Especially for us NA folk, every unsprung ounce hurts... My rear wheels are +15 offset anyway so even the 255 is a squeeze.

i'm probably getting yokohama ad-08r's in 255 over 265 to save unsprung weight, the 255 being 2 lb. lighter according to tire rack-
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...WR8AD08R&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes

that in conjunction with the ce-28n's i'm getting being 2 lb. lighter than the oem wheels means the package is 4 lb. lighter per rear wheel, which is a significant amount of unsrung weight.

The Kumho Ecsta LE is still available in 255/35-18 & 265/35-18 according to Tire Rack.

To go with the 255/35-18 tire size in the rear will a 18X9 be the best choice vs. a 18X10 rim? The front would be 215/40-17 on a 17X8.

On my Spoons/Regamasters (17/17) I'm running 215/40/17 and 255/40/17 Dunlop Direzza ZIIs.

On my CE28s (17/18) I'm running 215/40/17 and 265/35/18 Dunlop Direzza ZIIs.

As you can see, I'm a fan of the ZII.

There is zero benefit of going to a 10 on a 255. You'll just gain 1.5 pounds each side.

- - - Updated - - -

If you want to go 265 then get a 9.5. And there you will gain 1.5 on the wheel and 1-2 on the tire each side

yes, that's right,+43 front and +40 rear.i'm not well-versed in offsets, but did some reading on here and looked at what other people were doing and those seemed to be pretty conservative ones that would work well

Is the car stock height? I don't think you can go wrong with the CE28Ns. Seem to be hard to get.

yeah, stock height, and they do seem to be great wheels, and it takes quite a long time to get them.are you considering them? i know we're getting a bit ot here, but on the thread topic i considered the availability of tires before ordering these high end wheels and felt like there was a much better chance of being able to get decent tires in 17/18 in the future than in my oem 16/17's.a couple folks at tire rack said they thought that would be the case.

Yes I am looking towards the future as well. The 16/17 stock rims are limiting now and will probably get worse. For example the Yoko AD08R is made/available in the sizes we need on the 245/40R17 rear but the fronts 215/45R16 while available in the UK aren't available here without paying $200 in shipping for 2 fronts. I know some NSX Primers have done that.

Absolutely NOT true. The fact is, there are TWICE as many really sticky "extreme performance" tires available right now in the States in 16"/17" NSX sizes than 17"/17" and 17"/18" sizes. These include the BFGoodrich g-Force Rival, the Kumho Ecsta XS, and the Falken Azenis RT-615K in 215/45-16 fronts, and the Bridgestone Potenza RE-11, the Hankook Ventus R-S3 (Version 2), and the Toyo Proxes R1R in 205/45-16 fronts, all with 245/40-17 or 255/40-17 rears. Just not the AD08R, which is one of only three such tires (along with the Dunlop Direzza ZII Star Spec and Falken Azenis RT-615K) available in 215/40-17 fronts.

You are correct if you start changing the front tire to a 205 vs. a 215. Strange that Yokohama makes the tire in 215 but doesn't import it to the US. If you move up to the 17/18 wheel combo the RE-11 isn't made in the 215/40-17.

It seems like the options for the NSX tire sizes is slowly getting fewer and fewer.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the 235/40-17 & 275/35-18 combo is 11.12% larger in surface area (width x circumference) than the factory 215/40-17 & 255/40-17 sizes. This increase will make the tires last longer before they overheat, which becomes more important the fast you are as a driver, the more prone your tires are to overheating (Dunlop ZII, Sumitomo HTR ZII, Yoko S.Drive), and the hotter the track conditions.

If you overheat your tires half way through a session, you're:

- slower
- working harder behind the wheel and likely struggling
- more prone to make a mistake (simple or significant)
- not learning as much

To maximize learning, track time, and safety, not only is choosing a tire (for your situation, IE: more heat tolerant tire if you live in the desert) but considering the tire size (width, diameter = surface area) is also very important.

Now if you're looking to break track records 1 lap at a time in cold climates, your needs (and tire decision) will be different from someone who wants a consistent tire that lasts an entire 30 minute session.
