Who abandoned their NSX in Dubai?

Very curious abt this car in that oil popping money making heaven called dubai

The owner was probably a developer/investor that found out about Dubai going broke bcuz of over-development, so he ran... so fast from Dubai that he forgot his car...

Well folks I went down there to see the car. It has indeed sat for 7 months as it showed up one day when a friend moved into the building across the street.

Its in rough shape as you'll see in the photos. The yellow is not a stock Acura color as its really pale in shade. The doors, fenders, and front hood do not line up all that well. Its had a hard life however the interior is in such nice shape because it appears as though its been redone recently. There's a double din headunit in the car too...

The speedo is MPH and the current mileage is 29,000 plus it has Acura in the usual places. The VIN is JH4NA1155MT001585 which does not appear on Carfax nor Autocheck but it does appear on the www.vin-info.com link below. I've searched NSX Prime and nothing has turned up. Such a shame to see the car in its condition. Maybe NSX Prime member "Ben" has this VIN in his records? I'll ask him.

My thoughts are:

1. It was exported from North America as soon as it entered (hence why no Carfax or Autocheck records) - doesn't seem plausible...

or

2. Its a stolen NSX. The reason I say that is because on a local car forum here someone remembers seeing it years back in the Used Car Market and it couldn't be registered because of a lack of paperwork. This in my mind seems a more plausible reason why this car was just abandoned. And the website link below shows it as a Red car confirming that its not this crap yellow it appears as.

Scroll thru and you'll see some databases where it checks for stolen vehicles...odd that it would do that so somewhere this car must have been reported as stolen.

Wonder if Dubai's laws/regs are similar to here where if you find something like a bicycle or money that has been abandoned and report it to the police(they come pick it up and take down your info).
They hold on to it for something like 2-4 weeks and if no one claims it, you get to keep it. You might have to pay the tow/storage fees on something like a car but it might be worth it for an NSX. :) If it can't be reg'ed it could at least be parted out.

thanks for the report,..so stolen nsx from? ends up in dubai,gets repainted and used for awhile,,,then left for dead. btw could you id the eyeball in the coin tray?

don't hong kong nsx look like US bound cars?

Guys could the people not have perhaps made another NSX VIN (might happen to be the same VIN of the Red car noted in the other link) and then imported the car as another?

The interesting thing, and I can't remember as my NSX isn't here, is that the windshield completely blocks the VIN I've given. Isn't there a little look thru in the tinting of the windshield to see the VIN? We had to have me lay on the hood somewhat and using a mirror look between the glass and what appears to be a riveted VIN plate on the lower (near firewall) of the dash.

That's why this car seems suspect. I was almost tempted to use the ol' peel back the window and use a coat hanger to open the door locks however, I don't need to get busted for what appears to be theft...

I'm going down to the Police station later today with photos to try and claim it or ask what they will do with it...hehe:biggrin: Who knows?

JH4NA1155MT001585
J=Japan
H=Honda
4=Acura
NA1=3.0L Motor
1=Manual Transmission
5=1991-1994 NSX coupe with manual steering
5=Check digit (correct, based on this calculator http://www.alton-moore.net/vin_calculation.html)
M=1991 model year
T=Assembled in Tochigi, Japan
001585=Serial Number

NSXWiki said:
Cars sold outside the US have different VIN formats. For example, NSX models built for the Canadian market have their own serial number range, starting with 800001 each year.

I believe this to be a USDM 1991 NSX Manual Coupe, repainted from the original color. Maybe it was in the snap ring range and it broke? Might be why it hasn't be driven.. .

I heard that my name was mentioned in this thread. :biggrin:

So, the VIN is for a US Spec car, no question about that. Since it's a 1991, the color is not original.

American Honda's database lists that car as a Berlina Black manual with a White (Ivory) interior.

It's no secret that upon the NSXs introduction in the US in 1990, some were bought and exported without ever having been registered in the US, in which case, there would be no Carfax records for those cars. I know of at least one such car in Japan off the top of my head. This car is also likely one of those cars. Where it was exported to, and how it ended up in Dubai is another story. Since it first surfaced in Dubai in 2010, it was likely imported from another country. I'm sure Jetpilot3 would have noticed a yellow NSX had it appeared before then.

The observations would seem to indicate that it's not a factory paint job, so it's probably not one of the cars that American Honda had painted a non-standard color as a one-off either.

It's an aftermarket windshield. OEM windshields have the cutout window for the VIN. Many aftermarket windshields do not.

Using the http://www.vin-info.com site, it looks like the car has records in Europe. So, probably exported from US to Europe back in 1991 w/o ever being registered in the US, then exported again to Dubai in 2010?

Ben and others,

I visited the Dubai Police this evening equipped with pictures and the VIN info. There are no records of the car ever being registered or imported into the country...

The municipality will recover it, either re-register it for UAE road use or crush it. Unfortunately, the car rests in no mans land as it can't be exported.

Ben one thing I forgot to mention is that the windshield isn't aftermarket...its a Honda windshield with the normal Honda stamping.

SAD.:frown:

The http://www.vin-info.com has a section about stolen car records. There's a bunch of stolen car records from Europe. So, perhaps it was stolen in Europe and clandestinely brought into the UAE?

Windshield could also be a JDM windshield, those don't have the VIN cutouts either.

NOOO!!! Don't crush it.

Why don't you go to a DVM office and ask them about claiming it?

just tow it to your house and part it out. then sell the chassis for scrap metal. who is gonna come after you for taking it?

it can never be exported and never registered anywhere its a scrap car in my book.

or you can turn it into a track car, and get a Track car title and then export it, then put the parts back on to make it street legal and then register it.

and now the car has been saved.
