Wheel hop at the strip broke ????

I'm going to call Neillo Acura this a.m.
and price it out. $1800. is for BOTH sides complete and assembled. Although the other side is fine, the logic was there may have been significant stress put on in since the right side was completely shattered.

I don't know if this is sound logic or not.

Given I just ask for the right side CV joint shaft etc., what should I be looking to pay?

I'm not sure, does this sound high? Anyone?

I've never priced an NSX cv at Acura, but it sounds WAY EXTREAMLY high to me. For an integra you get rebuilds for $80, new for about $150! There is nothing special about nsx axles....other then there is no demand for them. They are probably LESS material then nsx axles. You should try http://raxles.com/ and see if they have them or if they can make you one. These are the best quality axles I've found, and they use brand new joints...and have a limited lifetime warranty. Also checkout driveshaftshop.com for high performance axles. I'm sure one of those shops could custom make you brand new high performance axles for waaay less. What is he doing...buying a shaft from Acura??? Also, if one of the CV joints failed, why replace both???? Did you price them at Nielo acura? I cant believe that price.

Hrm, usually when you buy parts from honda/acura direct, they wont let you buy a subpart...for example if you need a new throttle position sensor, they only sell the throttle body complete. I found this page:

<img src=http://www.nsxsc.com/nsxparts/1-m7.jpg>

Here it has the part numbers for all the guts of the CV and the intermediate shaft..looks like you can buy them seperate. So I'm assuming your cv broke at the joint. Well, looks like you could just get the joint parts and rebuild that cv section. There's no way it would add up to anything even near that for new guts. Sounds like you are getting ripped madly...I just cant believe that figure.

Something's obviously wrong. Maybe I got the ##'s wrong. This is WAY too far out of whack. Either way, many thanks once again guys for the knowledge sharing. It's greatly appreciated.

HAPPY ENDING

I spoke w/ my mechanic. The $1650. (not $1800 as I orig thought) was based on replacing the COMPLETE left and right shafts. It's obviously my call but given parts of the right shaft are just fragments, it had to take some sort of toll on the left side. Hey, I'm not into burning $$$ but in this case I DO figure better safe than sorry.

Oh yeah, I called Eric at Niello (per advice from this board) and they have the same parts in stock going out to me today FOR $500 DOLLARS LESS!!

I hope I get to meet some of you guys at some point. Beers are on me! And not the twist off stuff either. I'm talking the kind you need a bottle opener for!

Thanks again.

Nimbus-
Out of curiousity, what ET's are you getting when you run?

I'm finding I run out of revs in 4th at around 113mph with my 6sp 4.55. My traps are usually around 115-116mph.

My ET's are all over the map depending of course on my 60ft time. The best I've done is a 12.4 on street tires with a 2.1 60ft.

I am no drag racer by any means.

mcattack, since i recommended niello in this thread, and since i sort of live near boston (newburyport), rather than beer, just take me for a nitrous run when you have that thing fixed

Glad you found them cheaper. I know you will feel safer and more comfortable and all by replacing both with brand new parts, but I would not hesitate at all to replace only the broken one. I don't know Neilo's policy on returns. (or if there is one) Sounds like it would save you another $500+. Also doesn't look you looked into buying the single cv gut parts and a new boot either. The 600HP+ FWD Honda dragsters snap axles on a weekly bases like toothpics and they don't replace both when one fails. Just trying to save you some more...

Good luck.

I recall David constantly breaking CVs at the drag strip. He was working on a solution for this, maybe you should talk to him before replacing the CV. If it broke after only 3 runs it'll probably just break again. Gerry might also know of a solution.

McAttack - Sounds like it may be after the fact now for this particular incident, but a little birdie just told me:

"Please tell McAttack that he can get beefy CV joints for a very reasonable price from thedriveshaftshop.com. Ask for Frank. He might have to send his old joints in so they can measure the exact size.

Also, he can buy used half shafts from ERZ very reasonably. No reason to buy new factory ones."

No prob rob. Actually, if you have Sat the 24th of this month open, I'm going to race (or break a CV joint) in "Import Wars" at NE Dragway. That's only 1/2 hour or so from you. And this will be the LAST time I do 1/4 mile.

Nimbus has informed me that tracks exist which are more than 1/4 mile and have turns. Intriguing.......

Thanks Lud. Let's hope I don't need this info for a while!

EEEEwwwwww! Didn't realize that. What I saw was 9-12 qualifying and eliminations 1-4 or 5. So I guess I'll have one chance at qualifying. Maybe it'll be an early day.

never been there for an import drag competition type night, just the regular anyone can run nights, so perhaps it's somewhat different.
