Whatz with the kindergarten character avatars?

Been seeing new wave of kindergarten book like character avatars. Am I missing something? Some type of new movement? inside joke?

Ah - I remember the days when the majority of the posts were about the NSX, the majority of the NSXs still looked like the NSX, and the avitars were (you guessed it) NSXs and not things that either aroused me, confused me, or turned my stomach.
