This Chin Motorsports event is coming up. Just starting a thread to have a place to get organized.

I'm going. According to the roster at www.chinmotorsports.com, Mark & Maria and my friend Jim E. and his son are going. Anyone else?

I'm caravaning up with Jim on Friday, leaving at about 10:30 AM or so from the Atlanta area. Anyone want to join us?

Sure hope the weather is acceptable.

Jeff

Virginia International Raceway is located just barely north of the Virginia - North Carolina border, near Danville VA. It's about a 5 hour ride from Atlanta.

It's really a beatiful area (and track) in the rolling hills of VA. It's got those classic red barn-like buildings, and of course that famous oak tree at the start of the back straight.

For more info and directions and such, see the VIR Website

How do they feel about guests?

I could stop by but I'm not sure I'd want to participate on my winter (Michelin All-Season) tires...

Chin Motorsports is very flexible. You can get in the track and watch for no charge. Or you can buy a Passenger pass for $20.00 (and sign a waver) and be able to ride along with solo or instructor rated drivers. If you show up and buy a Passenger pass, I would be happy to take you on some laps. I'll be instructing.

BTW, I think I met you at a gas station there on rt. 58, about 6 months ago. You stopped and said howdy when you saw my red/black NSX. You live there and have an automatic, right?

How often do you track your car? I go to Danville all the time..

The weather forecast is looking good - high in the mid 50's and sunshine!

There are still openings available for anyone, including total novices, no matter what car you bring. You can attend for only a single day if you want to. Chin events are a great format - no run groups, just open track (but novices are required to attend instructional classes). Don't miss it!

Getting psyched :p

I got mine at a local motorcycle shop. That way you can go look at all the different styes and try them on for size. You want not much movement when you rotate your head back and forth quickly when it's on. About $150 or so for a descent one. Make sure it's Snell certified, most are both Snell and DOT certified. Snell certification is often checked before they let you on the track.

I also suggest you get a full face helmet. You don't want a motocross helmet with the big visor thing that sticks out. A removable face shield is a good idea, I remove mine most of the time to get plenty of fresh cooler air.

Well, it's tough to put a number on the likelyhood of an incident. VIR is a GREAT track for noobs, because there are almost no walls or other fixed objects to run into. Really, turn 5 is the only turn where you could likely hit a wall. Everywhere else is pretty much open fields (see picture below). Very few incidents at tracks that I've seen involve more than 1 car.

That being said, being on a track is not without risk. As a noob, you really need to keep the speed down in order to keep everything under control at all times. There will be plenty of other novices there also being conservative as they should. And all will have instructors in their car keeping them under control. If you do that, I think the chances of an incident are very low. Yes, there will be some passing by more experienced drivers, but this event is not sold out - mostly because Chin members are mostly from Florida and so not many are traveling up to VA in December. VIR is a long course (3.27 miles!), so there's plenty of room to spread out. Most HPDE clubs put 30 cars per mile on the track at once. This event will be way less than that, my guess is it will be about 1/3 to 1/2 of that.

You should DEFINITELY do it. VIR is a blast, and should be experienced at least once. The roller coaster, the hog pen, and my favorite the upper esses (which experience and track tires allow me to do at over 100 mph - but as a noob you should NOT do that). It is awesome. Right, Xavier?

Alright! This is gonna be fun with a lot of NSXs.

After you apply online, you'll need to print out the schedule and also the tech inspection form. The inspection should be done by someone who is actually competent - it usually is the driver as most track rats are good enough mechanics to do a reasonable job of it. But if you are not mechanically inclined and you are not sure of the state of your car, get someone else to do it - pay a real mechanic if you are unsure.

In 4 years of track events, I have had 2 unintentional spins on tracks (I drive relatively conservatively on track cuz I don't want to wreck my nice car). Both spins were due to other cars having a mechanical problem - popping radiator hoses. That happened half a lap ahead of me, and I happened to be the first to roll over that spot of radiator fluid. I didn't hit anything, and did the right thing (both feet in - clutch and brake) and stopped safely. If they had closely inspected the hoses, they may have seen cracks. It ended their track event early in any case.

VIR is tough on brakes. Make sure yours are in good shape. If the fluid in your master cylinder is dark and old, you really must bleed them with new fluid. Make sure you have pads with lots of life left in them. Preferably track pads which don't fade when they get hot.

Jeff, I'll be tracking the Red Beast after a new engine install!!! The harmonic balancer on the crankshaft pulley failed at Watkins Glen with pieces hitting the timing belt and knocking it off the rear cams. Result, bent exhaust valves, rear bank of cylinders. Decided to get a new engine instead of fix this one.

I'm arriving on Friday evening late. See you there.

hehe.. true! when i was first doing the esses I was only doing them at like.. 85-90.... so.. it's all a learning curve...

But seriously.. VIR is by far the best noob track i've seen.. the run-off room is sickening.

Jeff:
HPD Schools usually use 10-15 cars per mile. 30 cars per mile is just too much. You would have 90 to 120 cars on the track at one time. There aren't enough flatbeds in Virginia to handle the carnage.:)

SO How many NSX's are going to be there????

If I can convince my Wife maybe we can show up Sunday.

And, of course, I'll be there! Although, I'll be mostly working, not driving! It's a tough job, but somebody's got to provide all this track time!

I counted 7 on the rosters at the Chin site. I hope you can make it Mike, I'd like to meet you in person.

Jeff
