For those of us that are not going to track event, we should arrange for some other activity. Any suggestions?
I know a very nice two and a half hour drive, without any stops. You will want to stop to admire the mountains and desert, though. Gorgeous country.
Leave LV going north on US-95 toward Reno for 30 minutes, 70 or 75 mph road, to the Lee canyon turn off, Nv-156. Turn left. This road rises from 4,000 ft to 8,500 ft in about 20 minutes. (It usually has the least amount of Nv.Highway Patrol vehicles.) This road ends at the closed ski area. The last 3 miles is a winding alpine road.
After that you would go south to Kyle Canyon (10 min), Nv 158 to Nv. 157 (back toward Las Vegas). This is the most winding part of the drive, taking you from to 8,000 ft to 9,000ft then back to 7,000ft.
At Nv.157 there are two lodges to get some food or drink. The drive back toward LV and US-95 (20 min) has more people and cars.
Then you can then go back to the hotel or go to the track. The track will add an hour of joyful driving. (US-95, I-215 then to RT at Charleston Blvd.) The drive goes past Red Rock Canyon with stunning red and white sandstone cliffs, and a nice 55 MPH winding road.
This takes you to Nv.160 (Rt) which goes through Mt. Springs Summit ,5000 ft.,then down to the track just outside of Pahrump. This is also a nice drive.
Drivers need to watch out for pedestrians, bicyclists, deer, and horses.
