I'm still waiting for my 2000 MBP to be shipped to me from NY by TFX Shipping.

I heard a couple of good reviews about TFX, but I have to say they have been a pain in the a$$ to deal with. They keep you in the dark, no pickup date, no delivery date, you have to kill yourself to drag a piece of info out of them. The dispatcher girl is a b$tch to talk to. The sales guy tells you "you'll have your car next week". Next week turns into "next month". I was supposed to get it last week of October, now estimated delivery date is Nov 19 or 20.

I just hope I get my car before the first snow, and have time to put her to winter sleep properly.

With the abundance of information you've provided, I'm surprised they couldn't overnight it to you.

You give us no information about where you live. If you live in S. Africa, then I'd assume it'll take a while to get there from NY.

I used TFX to bring my Ferrari up from the US. There were a couple of delays getting it up here but the truck and driver that brought up the car were excellent. For the most part dealing with their office was Ok but I can see how one could get frustrated. I just stayed patient and let them do their job.

I did use another company to haul my Porsche up. These guys wouldn't cross the border so I had to meet them. Then they broke down in Nevada and left my car on an open trailer for 3 weeks. To top it off when the guy arrived he didn't have any of the paperwork I needed to import the car so I had to find a place to store it and return home without it. After that TFX was the only way I would go.

Oh boy, that makes me feel better. thanks.

I would normally have no problems with delays, but as long as they take accountability and at least update me. I have to call them to find out there has been a delay. Who works like that?

But at least they haven't left my car on the road for 3 weeks, ... not yet!

Ray, it going to be here soon, hopefully there no Snow on the ground in Ottawa when they deliver your NSX.

BTW...who is the Redhead in your avatar?

Bram

That's my wife!... JK. I don't remember now where I got that picture, but it hit a spot. Something mysteriously pleasant about blue cars and redheads...

There was already snow on the ground last week in SnOttawa, but luckily it melted. I keep watching the weather site...

Ahh, the DIY way does not always work as planned which is why you may want to use your local Freight Forwarder - you'd be amazed of the connections they have

The problem isn't with the border customs, it's the fact that shipping companies don't like moving half-full trucks. Not worth it for them, especially to somewhere like Ottawa. So they keep pushing back to get more cars in the truck. At the expense of their customers. They don't really care if you have to wait longer, if they can save a bunch of money.

Sometimes it is more expedient to just hire a hauler with a smaller rig that only needs three cars to make a load. They are out there and they do international deliveries. I feel your pain Moisted on the wait time believe me.

That's exactly why you call someone in the 'industry' - surprising how we can move things and FYI, most Forwarders have nothing to do with Customs (different businesses) but moving things is our specialy and our connections with either our own trucks or others we work with. Don't worry, it will arrive and you're storing it any way so what's the rush.

I don't know what Forwarders are, but getting someone to move the car and someone else to do the customs work? No thanks. I don't need the trouble. The car shipping companies do all the work for you, they pickup the car and bring it to your home and work with customs professionals to move it across the border, that's their job.

Usually the trucking companies base their rates on a full or nearly full load.
If they end up with too few cars for a run they'll delay until they get enough of a load to cover the costs.
You can't expect a low rate, then complain of poor service if the trucker is having trouble filling out the load.
If you want prompt delivery call the trucker and ask how much to deliver your car now with an empty truck
When you hear the rate you'll be happy to wait.

Yes that is true, and I totally understand that. ... Just wish they would be upfront about it. No need to tell you a date and then keep changing it. Or the fact that the car is going to be offloaded in toronto on the way here, sleep in a warehouse for 3 days, then on a different truck, ...

Anyhow, no worries, I'll let them do their job. I'm just saying they could do with a bit of customer management skills.

I am Just wondering why you wouldn't make a weekend road trip and just drive down to pick it up? It's not that from Ottawa, 7-8 hour drive?

Aaah, but that was my first option... However as I discussed in another thread it's not that simple. ... Two major challenges:

First off, the three border crossings close to Ottawa require the original Title and Bill Of Sales in their hands 72 hours before crossing, no faxes, no emails, no copies. So I'd have to pay the seller from here, have him sign and courier the documents to the border, wait 3 days then fly down and drive up the car for 7 hours.

Second, in order to drive in NYS I'd have to get a temporary license plate/or permission from DMV NYS. They need all kinds of documents to give me a temporary license, insurance, title (which is now at the border), bill of sales (which is also at the border), etc, etc. Not to mention that I'd need a different temporary plate for driving in Ontario (this is of course easier to get, nevertheless, extra work).

All this potentially complex challenges, plus the fact that I may get a custom officer at the border who happens to have had a fight with their wife/husband and is willing to do anything in their power to make my life hell, made me pick option 2: hire a trucking company that specializes in cross-border transportation of exotic cars, picks up the car in NY, does all the customs work for me, and drops the car off at my door.

.................that's a huge truck....

I don't know what Forwarders are.
...........One stop shopping.............we DO it all, every day all day - except for those that are semi retired then we only help out here and there. We spoke and could have had it here for you in 3 days (respecting the 72 hr clause at the border) much cheaper then TFX (my rates with them are cheaper then yours) and basically we are travel agents for cargo...........just wonderin how they're gonna move the 35' wide truck down the road carrying all those cars - that's something I can't do

yea, where have I heard that before.

The NSX have some very nice friends!!

I know, and the guy was saying people were more interested in checking out the NSX than the other ones.

LOL, ... the picture is from inside the warehouse just before being put on the truck.

The car will be in Toronto later today. I have an option to fly down to Toronto tomorrow, pick up and drive back to Ottawa (4 hours). Or wait until Wednesday next week for delivery.

What do you guys think?... 1. pickup tomorrow 2. Wait till Wednesday.

Come on, let's see those votes.

Oddly enough, I have much the same commute to procure my NSX as you. Let me give you a brief rundown of my tale.

Leave Hamilton at 03:00 Saturday morning
Arrive in Ottawa at 7:15 to meet with previous owner
Test drive, coffee etc until 9:00a.m.
Arrive at M.T.O at 9:15a.m. to find their computer system is down for the day.
My plates on the car at 11:30
Lunch until 12:30p.m.
Drive back to Hamilton until 5:30p.m.
Park my new NSX in the garage
Leave home and go to a bachelor party in Niagara Falls for 6:30p.m.

I had to do the deed that day, otherwise I was busy for almost the entire two months following. For timing all the tumblers had to fall in place otherwise I would have been late to the party. When I found out the computer system at the MTO was down I felt like Jack Bauer in 24, I heard the beep, beep beep of the clock counting down.

I vote for coming down to pick it up. Think of the adventure! What better way to start your ownership of the car?

I'd be driving with plates that are not registered for the car though...

But who cares... If I get stopped I'll just tell the officer, people on Prime made me to do it...
