I have a 91NSX. It has developed a "whine" to the engine when it idols. its constant but does change with the engine RPM's. Anyone know ever experience this?

Well, it uses belts, so it's not the chain ;).

There have been a couple of rpm variable noises attributed to different things in the engine bay.

-AC Belt tensioner pulley bearing - this goes bad and sounds like a whine/whistle/chirp noise

-Throttle body - can sound like someone blowing across a coke bottle if dirty or otherwise slightly off

when I saw the Title of this thread I was gonna rip into it.

Timing Chain. OMG or OMFG or WTF

granted some car have chains but not the NSX.

Obviously this maybe an issue for someone that has greater knowledge of this car than you. Who do you have that works on your car? Is there a good independant you take it too? If not find one and take it to them. Don't sit there and worry over some new strange noise that will take you forever to track down - take it to a pro. They'll tell you and it won't hurt - till you fix it. If you don't like the noise - gonna have to fix it. Figuring out what it is and knowing what it's going to take to make it all better will tell you what you need to know. Hopefully you are prepared to take care of your car.

If the metal noise, the bearings of alternator east can be in question, or, check the good state and the tension of the belts of alternator and A/C compressor, finally, if that is in order, check the rubber of the pulley damper (crankshaft)… danger!

ok guys, I got ripped on pretty heavy over the timing change title. I deserve that one! Yes it does not have a timing chain but the noise sounds like if a timing chain was getting ready to let go if it had one. I'm going to check the AC belt tensioner. It seems to have a rattling noise. The whine seems to get worse as the car heats up. Will check the AC bearing in the morning. Anybody got any other ideas? Thanks for the beating everyone! If its a timing belt, I'll make sure the mechanic beats me with it!

I found a lost solution for that noise you mentioned... its cheaper than going to an independent mechanic like Tim suggested, and really does not require any special tools or parts.

Ive found that if you just get some ear plugs, all those noises go away! For like 15 cents you can run your car until it breaks and never hear a thing!

Glad to see your sense of humor is in good order! When I hear noises that bug me and sound like something is wrong - I am very fortunate to have Eiffel here in town to check it out. I can fix little things but when it comes to whirring or whinning or screaching sounds with as little space as there is in that engine compartment from the top - I have to take it somewhere.

First thing a person should do when contemplating buying a car like the NSX is to make sure he knows a good place to work on it with qualified people 0r person to do the work. That's at least the path I'd take.

Now if you have a good Acura dealer it doesn't take any time to ask who their master mechanic is and have a word with him. You know unless you are a good mechanic yourself you best be finding out who is for your car in your area. Even if you identify a sound - what then?

I don't mean to rip on the OP but man if someone had answered your question - what were you going to do then? I'm just curious. You don't tell anyone exactly where the sound is coming from, how many miles on the car, and it is not going to be a timing belt btw - it's going to be something else. It sounds like if you identify that it's something really bad you might need to sell it quick. Questions like this always make me wonder what is at the back end of it. If it's a simple belt or pulley issue - then wouldn't any reasonably good Acura mechaic be able to fix it and isn't that what you want - someone to fix it?

Not quite sure I get this post exactly. I hope you find out what it is. The guy that said get a video of it and the sound and send it in wasn't kidding - he's a mechanic. There is help here but you gotta help Primers help you.

The whining would change if it was the AC compressor when it clicks on then off.

If you're talking about rattling....... valve chatter?

SOMETIMES you can isolate noise using a piece of garden hose about 24" long--you place one end on the most noticeable noise area and listen to the other end. The noise could be a belt tensioning bearing, an altinator bearing, a water pump bearing---. It could also be the timing belt beginning to come apart but with the noise change with temp, I suspect a bearing getting ready to let go.
