The Official 2011 F1 Thread....Now That 2010 is Over

It was a pretty entertaining race, Kobi/shumy scrap awesome!!!

Great for button indeed, not to mention nick.
Too bad for Perez, he was on a two stopper he could of gotten some points..

Great race for Jenson. Damn you Alonso you douche for messing up Lewis. Both McLaren drivers are on my Fantasy F1 team and I could have really used those points if they had finished 2 & 3.

It was obviouse who was faster at the end of race(without DRS).Deserved penalties.Maybe I'm not objective but in replay of crash from camera of Lewis back end car,on exit of turn looks like he step off the gas.

For other Seb to strong, good race for Mark and Nick.It was interesting race without rain untill end.

Jenson articulated this technical point very well: the tire graining can surprisingly reduce if you go faster around a corner and therefore have higher aero downforce. That requires downforce to increase faster than centripetal force, and in McLaren's case I suppose that is true.

To hear Jenson tell it:

Well the thing is it’s very difficult to understand what to do with the tyre. If you try and preserve it sometimes you make the situation worse as you are not carrying as much speed through a high-speed corner and then you get less downforce and you damage the tyre more so it is a very, very tricky situation to be in.
Jenson now has 26 points, Lewis has 22 points, and Kamui Kobayashi has six points! So Kobayashi san has more points than Michael Schumacher! Wow.

Actually with some bias  I thought Webber's race was huge! He dropped 5 spots off the line [and the in-car showed his start was fine, just not having KERS made him a sitting duck] and then the team and Webber's pushing made a four stop strategy work for them. With a couple more laps he may have even had a podium! A hard days work.

As for the Alonso/Hamilton stoush, it was great fun and they both did really well. Hamilton weaved once too often under the new regulations and copped a penalty, and Alonso made a small mistake and wacked Hamilton lightly. I didn't think Alonso's necessarily warranted a penalty, but the new philosophy does seem stringent?

As for Vettel he has taken up where he left off last year, and so far the luck that alluded him last year has stayed with him this year. What say you a consecutive World Championship [and I personally don't like the cocky little bastard  ]

Re: Macca amazes again

They've displaced Fezza as chief contenders to Red Bull. And it looks like Butt's tire management worked to his advantage again with a 19 lap stint. No drama, just results. Good on him.

What a flight that Petrov had. I can't imagine the heart clutching fear he felt with a broken steering wheel flopping around.

I don't mind some domination, but I'll bet Bernie's frying his synapses thinking up the next gimmick to slow Vettel down.

Noticed Vettel had an inflatable cushion under his HANS. Never seen that before. Not sure I'd want to compromise the security of tight belts with something that would allow more movement in a shunt. But hey, JMHOWTFDIK?

Great race! Yeah I'm sure Alonso is still up at night thinking about that one...

Too bad for Petrov, but I'm very happy for Heidfeld after all the crap he got after the last race.

Seems like Schum just cannot get away from Kobiashi, but it was still a decent finish for him as well (ie anywhere above his teammate). As usual he was a beast at the starting line, but just doesn't seem to have the pace nor is able to keep the tires under him.

One sunny day in small airport Treviso near Venice Italy in 2007. my friend and me saw two guys coming out of Maserati. One of them was very familiar to me it was Michael Schumaher,I aproach to him and spoke few words about missing his racing(last year of racing 2006).We shake hands and he entered in airport.I was his fan and he drived for my favourite team for Scuderia. He was big, fast driver, 7 titles, many records...
Now I'm thinking what is he doing on track after last year fail.Maybe it would be better to him to tell people he got some problems whit healt and retired.I know car is not good but it was risk that didnt pay.He would be always great but...does he need this?:frown:

Petrov's semi-explanation for his crash:

Interesting article about RBR's KERS issues:
http://en.espnf1.com/redbull/motorsport/story/45800.html

Red Bull left the power boost off the cars at the season opener in Australia and then had intermittent problems with it in Malaysia on Sebastian Vettel's car, while Mark Webber's failed altogether ahead of the race.
Funny how it fails before the race for Webber but not for Vettel.

BTW, I love the back-to-back races. Can't wait to see what happens in China. McLaren is bringing development parts and both drivers are equally good there.

Ferrari is a bit off the pace. Hopefully they will catch up soon. I was disappointed in Speed's coverage; they totally missed Massa's botched pit stop. I guess there is a reason Bob Varsha is the "A" team announcer. I don't really think Hamilton or Alonso's penalty was warranted. China will be interesting.

Schumacher's speed always came from a car developed very much to his particular style - very pointy at the front with comparatively minimal rear grip. The Mercedes is yet to be developed to his style - it my never be because it would invariably mean that Rosberg would find it difficult to be competitive in it.

While it may have surprised him that he has lacked the pace since returning, he seemed willing enough to continue this year, probably hoping that Brawn would give him a car that would allow him to redeem himself in his fans eyes. Alas, so far that does not seem to be the case.

Motor racing is a young man's sport even at club level, at F1 level after 35 I don't believe you would have the stamina to be at 100% for every session let alone the race. But would anybody else that Mercedes could readily pick up be quicker than Schumacher at the moment? Probably not, as the car is yet to be considered a front runner this year, indeed it seems further behind than last year! So Schumacher will continue this year, but I would be surprised to see him continue next year on his current form.

The toll of age and resulting deterioration of reflexes, judgment etc. make it tough, if not impossible to come back. Schumi is like Tiger Woods; they are both beyond their prime. So, although there will be flashes of brilliance and they will be a force to be reckoned with on occasion, their days in dominance are gone forever.

And yeah, gotta agree that Ross doesn't have anyone better at the moment. Some 21 year old hot shoe may come along and drag the car to the front some day but there now appears to be too many loose ends for Merc to be consistent.

What happened in Massa's pit stop and what were the consequences? In all fairness, there were 55 pit stops so it was difficult to keep track of that much action. Very busy for everyone; racers, engineers, strategists, pit crews and TV directors.

from what I read, ~6secs wasted in the pit due to perhaps a stuck wheel nut in his first stop. I didn't see it either, but I think this is how suddenly he was behind Alonso after jumping out in front at the start

During BBC's post-race forum, Jenson admitted not putting on enough front wing during the first two stints, so he kept increasing front wing at every pit stop, until the last stint with prime tires and the most front wing the car finally felt good.

Jenson could have won that race if his team got his set up correct at the start.

Massa was running a great race when the pit snafu moved him back. I was watching the race, saw him and Hamilton come in, and Massa sit there for what seemed forever. I think Bob V would have noticed it.

Re: 2 races in and.............

the 2011 circus looks a whole lot different than it did just a few years ago. The animals and routines are twisted but wierdly fascinating. Sprinklers and passing shortcuts can't be far behind.

And then? I'd bring back my suggestion about eye patches, boxing gloves and ski boots, but you've heard it all before. So, how about a driver be allowed to use his front wing fence to cut one rear tire per race. It's a great weapon but kinda risky if you're RB and have a flexy front wing. And who would be better at using this weapon than Fred? Think I'll fire that off to Bernie right now.

I bet the rules would state that drivers would only be able to use it on the main straight though (although wide open for qualifying). It could get confusing for viewers when Alonso runs into the back of the guy in front mid-corner by accident and is penalized

Actually in Alonso's defence [and I'm no Alonso fan] this one can actually be attributed in some part to Hamilton! Now before you guys start getting apoplectic on me.......

During Alonso's passing attempt, he carried far more exit speed off the previous apex. A camera view from the rear of the passing attempt [not the Ferrari in-car camera] shown on local televsion here in Australia [One HD RPM programme] clearly shows that as Hamilton reached the outside extreme of his exit arc, he maintained steering angle a bit which meant his car continued in it's arc towards the middle of the track, something you would tend to do to align the car for the next corner, or to make it harder for your pursuer to pass . Not much mind, about 1m of movement towards the middle of the track. Not a lot, but enough that it meant Alonso mis-judged how much room he would have in sweeping around Hamilton's car, he was probably not helped by just how much extra speed he was carrying over Hamilton at that point. Finally, the Ferrari's mild understeer at that point didn't help any either!

Definetly a "racing incident" and most certainly not worthy of ANY penalty. Flame away

Re: The Elders............what's going on?

The teams have never been bunched more than this weekend. All teams have both cars within a couple of tenths of each other in Q times. Leading to the conclusion, of course, that the cars are the same (and overshadow the individual driving skill) and the cars are on the same tire schedule/setup for the Q and race.

Then Schumi and Webber break that mold and can't get out of their own way. Are their teams being independent and trying something different?

Have not heard and cannot come up with a good explanation.

P.S. Is Sutil done? :frown: DiResta's good but................

Webber's luck has deserted him again

From Autosport........

The Australian insisted it was easy to judge Red Bull's decision after qualifying.

"When any top team goes out in Q1 we can all put the hindsight goggles on and say we should have done this or should have done that. In the end, for sure, option would have made life easier – and it is completely obvious that we could have made that decision. But we didn't as a team.

"And we all thought we would get enough laps on the prime to get the two timed laps in, but obviously we were a bit late going out and then it turned out we were on the wrong tyre as well – because of the timing."

Webber also said the team was still puzzled about its problems to get KERS working properly.

"Don't know. If you can tell us, you could have a job," he said.

Gotta love that Aussie attitude

I'm looking forward to a BIG race from Webber tomorrow, his car has the pace to get him near a podium, like last week, BUT not if KERS isn't working, again!!! :frown:
