The (2nd) Official 2016 F1 thread

Anyone going to Melbourne for the season opener? I am planning a trip to Australia this year and I think I will be able to make it to the 2016 Australian Grand Prix. It will be my first F1 race ever!

I was able to attend three races in Melbourne many years ago and I got the same grandstand seats at the last corner before the main straight.
The weather was always great and wonderful people everywhere.
Nothing quite like being at a race to experience the sounds, the crowds and so on.

Honda seems to have made progress on power and reliability so McLaren could be mid-pack, I hope

noise from the paddock is saying once the fly away races are done, it will be a 2 horse race between Mercedes.. favouring Rosberg.. differing viewpoints at Honda on how to handle the radio ban.. differing viewpoints between hasegawa and dennis at Honda on their strategy for hiring external staff by mid season, (Ron differing opinion from Japan ? , no surprise there) Alonso and his manager don't approve of the direction, and Alonso looks likely he'll leave by years end..followed by Jenson.. Renault and Haas F1 are hiring big time if anyone wants as an engineering or aerodynamicist job across the pond, they'll hire you quickly..

Button splits the two Mercedes! And Alonso is even faster on the time sheet! (so far) :p

That timing shoot must have been for their cool down lap...+10 sec....the official time have Lewis at [email protected] in both sessions, with the McHonda duo at 7 and 8.

Alonso and Button 6th & 7th after FP2. I'd say McLaren Honda are solidly in the points this season.

the early pace of the Honda's is definitely looking a lot better. however this new qualifying set-up is looking a bit shit!

unfortunately we never got to see the outright pace of the McLaren's to see how they stacked up to the Merc's and Ferrari's...

McHonda is no where near the Mercs, but they're def top 5 or so.

All the teams principals were saying that they need to fix the qualifying format by next race.
Either let them finish their lap even if the 90 seconds are up, or go back to the old format.

i agree, that was a monumental screw-up of a new format.

at the very least, if the car is out of the pits and on track at speed, their lap should be allowed to count...

there's probably gonna be a few surprises tomorrow and a few cars coming through the field...

absolute crap quali format, McHonda still got a long way to go but are 5 seconds faster than last year so things are going in the right direction

Yeah, the new quali format is a joke. What were they thinking!!!!?!???!

Fantastic result for Haas. Very disappointing for McLaren-Honda as I was really hoping they had pace to score well into the points. Very glad Alonso was not hurt, the crash looked very frightening.

I also think McHonda could have finished in the points today had it not been for Alonso's crash. Glad he walked away from that. The team made the wrong call on tires for Button after the red flag too.

Ferrari, what the hell were you thinking??
Poor Kimi, ALWAYS with the bad luck. :/

Great start to the season!

About the horrible qualifying format, the best quote came from Damon Hill on TV: "Lewis had time to wave his own chequered flag". But really, the teams themselves are to blame since they unanimously decided to adopt the new format.

It was shocking to see Alonso actually get up out of that crumpled heap......but goes to show how safe the cars are when the energy is distributed....the G loads dissipated as the car rolled rather than abruptly stop from high speed.

^ Yes! Wasn't that amazing!

How does everyone like the NBC color commentary team...
