TCS light stays on

The yellow TCS light stays on and the green light on the TCS button doesn't work. After running the diagnostic test, the TCS light blinked 5 long and 1 short. Does anyone know what this means? '91 NSX

Check TCS sections 19-74 through 19-138 in the on-line service manual. Everything you ever wanted to know about the TCS is there. On page 19-84, it states that a 5-1 code is related to " abnormal fail-safe relay, throttle actuator, or throttle body" and it spells out the related components. Let us know what you find the problem to be. Good luck.

Thanks Doc, I could have knocked loose something on the thottle body when I was changing the 2 coolant hoses.

My right rear tire pressure was way low. The tcs light went off after putting in air. That was easy enough, Thanks!

The TCS light went back on and it stays on after start-up. I also noticed the motor bogging, after first slowing down and then accelerating, like in a slow turn in first gear. I'm not sure if it is related to the throttle body(problem code 5-1) or wheel sensor? Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you in advance.

The "bogging" sounds like the TCS is activating properly. The most common reason for TCS problems is using tire sizes other than those most appropriate for the NSX and its TCS:

15"/16" wheels with 205/50-15 and 225/50-16
16"/17" wheels with 215/45-16 or 205/45-16 and 245/40-17
17"/17" wheels with 215/40-17 and 255/40-17
17"/18" wheels with 215/40-17 and 255/35-18 or 265/35-18

What are your tire sizes?

Thanks Brian for responding. How can I check if it is the main relay that's causing the problem? And if it is, can it be fixed or do I need to buy a replacement?

If it is, you'll need to buy a replacement. It's easy and not all that expensive (around $50, IIRC).

Thanks Brian. Would a problem with the main relay cause the TCS light to stay on? Where is the main relay and do I need to buy a replacement from my Acura dealership?

Thanks again Brian. Is the fail safe relay located in the main relay box? Just for your information, I recently installed a SOS throttle body and SOS chip. Could the TCS error code 5-1 have anything to do with this install? Also, I just changed the two main coolant hoses. Could coolant all over the engine compartment be the cause of this error code?

I just installed a new main relay from Dali. Took the car on a vigorous run and the yellow TCS did not come on, thank goodness!!! Thank you Briank for your help and everyone else for their input. ALOHA

Hey garyn,
Glad to hear the problem is solved. I recently installed the SoS BBTB and ECU. What are your initial impressions of the upgrade? I enjoy the higher redline and I notice better throttle response and all around driveabilty has improved slightly. Not sure how much of that is reality or placebo effect though. :)

Hugh, I also got better throttle response and better accelleration. I had a problem with an eratic idle but the t/b from SOS solved that problem. I was planning to do a transmisssion swap with the close ratio gears and ring and pinion next. I'll be sure to pm once that is done. Take care and Aloha!
